Padres | Austin Hedges out 4-6 weeks

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 11:31:40 -0700

San Diego Padres C Austin Hedges (hand) will have surgery to fix a fractured hamate bone in his hand Wednesday, April 27, and he's estimated to miss four to six weeks.

Fantasy Tip: Hedges is more of a defensive-minded catcher, and he backed up Derek Norris for most of the 2015 season. He showed some improvement with his bat this spring, but this is a notable setback for him, and he's unlikely to have any fantasy value at all this year.

Padres | Austin Hedges likely to start in minors

Thu, 24 Mar 2016 10:32:43 -0700

San Diego Padres C Austin Hedges is likely to start the year at Class AAA El Paso barring a trade.

Fantasy Tip: Hedges made some strides this spring to work on his approach at the plate, and the results were encouraging (two home runs, .300 average in 20 at-bats), but it wasn't enough apparently. He remains a defense-first backstop that won't make much noise in fantasy even if he comes up at any point this season.

Padres | Austin Hedges poised for step forward?

Thu, 10 Mar 2016 12:22:17 -0800

San Diego Padres C Austin Hedges appears ready to take significant step forward in 2016, in the opinion of MLB Network's Jon Heyman.

Fantasy Tip: Hedges projects to serve as the No. 2 catcher behind Derek Norris, and Hedges has just 152 plate appearances with a disastrous .463 OPS in the majors. He is widely viewed as a defense-first catcher, so keep your expectations in check. At best, Hedges is a low-end option in NL-only formats.

Padres | Austin Hedges goes off Tuesday

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 17:40:34 -0800

San Diego Padres backup C Austin Hedges slugged two home runs in spring action Tuesday, March 8. Hedges has been working with hitting coach Alan Zinter to unlock some raw power. Hedges finished with five RBI Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Hedges is a defense-first catcher that remains a backup, at best, for the Padres currently. He probably could use more minor league seasoning, but keep an eye on his newfound power stroke. Unless an injury opens up more time, pass for now.
