Lions | Comfortable with right tackles

Tue, 25 Feb 2014 23:44:01 -0800

The Lions would be comfortable heading into the 2014 season with OT LaAdrian Waddle and OT Corey Hilliard as their right tackles, according to general manager Martin Mayhew, who says both players played "really good football" for the team last season. Detroit will not likely pursue an upgrade in free agency, but the club could be open to adding a tackle early in the draft if the opportunity arises.

Tue, 21 Jan 2014 23:35:34 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he still sees "a place for the wide nine in our system," and new Lions coach Jim Caldwell said it's "necessary" to use the defensive alignment, which requires defensive ends to set up outside the tight end in order to get better angles in the pass rush. "If you've taken a look at us, when we were in Indy, did you see (Dwight) Freeney and (Robert) Mathis?" said Caldwell, the Indianapolis Colts' head coach in 2009-11. "What'd they line up in? There we go."

Lions | Top draft picks to be on the field quickly

Wed, 01 May 2013 13:01:55 -0700

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he expects the teams high draft picks to be on the field quickly because of the needs of the team. "That's a fair statement, but it's also fair to say we had more holes coming into it, or more holes that we knew about, coming into this draft than we did last year," Mayhew said. "We do expect a lot of those guys, especially guys that we took early, to be on the field pretty quickly." First-round pick DE Ezekiel Ansah was drafted to replace DE Kyle Vanden Bosch. Second round pick CB Darius Slay will compete with CB Bill Bentley. Third round pick OG Larry Warford will likely replace OG Stephen Peterman.

Sat, 09 Feb 2013 07:08:26 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is not concerned about the status of impending free-agent DE Cliff Avril. Mayhew is confident Avril's impending free agency will be worked out, one way or another. "All those guys that are free agents, we'll continue to have discussions about," Mayhew said. "I've talked to a few of their agents. We have ample time to sort through those situations. If you go back and look through our history here, we haven't had a lot of free agents that we really wanted to have back that we didn't get back."

Lions | Will look to add another weapon to the passing game

Thu, 03 Jan 2013 09:55:11 -0800

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he will look to add a playmaker in the passing game this offseason. Mayhew has taken one wide receiver in each of his four NFL Drafts as Lions general manager. "The way I look at it, when you've got a quarterback like Matthew Stafford, you want to keep giving him weapons, and that's what we're going to try to keep doing," Mayhew said. "If it's receiver, if it's a tight end, if it's a running back that can catch passes out of the backfield, all those things help Matthew to be better, and they help Calvin to be better."
