Angels | C.J. Cron, Johnny Giavotella sitting

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 14:58:25 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B C.J. Cron and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup Wednesday, April 27. 1B Ji-Man Choi is serving as the designated hitter and is batting ninth, while SS Cliff Pennington is at the keystone and is hitting seventh against Kansas City Royals SP Chris R. Young.

Fantasy Tip: Giavotella and Pennington are likely locked into a platoon and should only be rostered in the deepest AL-only leagues, with Pennington being the more attractive one. Choi, a switch-hitter, has only one hit in nine at-bats off the bench this year and is a very weak daily target tonight.

Angels | Mike Trout serving as DH

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 14:51:16 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Mike Trout (foot) is serving as the designated hitter for the first time this year Monday, April 25, after fouling a ball off his foot over the weekend. OF Rafael Ortega is in center field and is batting second, while 1B Ji-Man Choi is in left field and is hitting ninth against Kansas City Royals SP Ian Kennedy. 1B C.J. Cron also takes a seat with 1B Albert Pujols at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Start Trout as you normally would in all fantasy formats. His foot isn't a problem after he started Sunday. Ortega and Choi haven't done much with the bats in Anaheim and are weak daily plays against Kennedy, who is out to a fine start with KC.

Angels | Two Halos sitting out

Sat, 23 Apr 2016 14:36:06 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Johnny Giavotella and 1B C.J. Cron are out Saturday, April 23, with 2B Cliff Pennington hitting seventh and 1B Ji-Man Choi hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Neither Pennington nor Choi make good DFS plays tonight against Felix Hernandez.

Angels | C.J. Cron on the bench

Tue, 12 Apr 2016 16:02:54 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B C.J. Cron is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 12. 1B Ji-Man Choi is starting at first base and hitting against Oakland Athletics SP Kendall Graveman.

Fantasy Tip: Cron is off to a disappointing start (2-for-26, .077), so you should certainly consider benching him in all formats. Choi won't offer much to fantasy owners and is a weak play in daily formats.

Angels | C.J. Cron, Johnny Giavotella not playing

Fri, 08 Apr 2016 14:54:54 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B C.J. Cron and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup Friday, April 8. 1B Ji-Man Choi is starting at first base and hitting seventh, while SS Cliff Pennington is at the keystone and is hitting ninth against Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin.

Fantasy Tip: While Griffin is as shaky as they come for starting pitching in a spot start against the Angels, daily gamers still won't have much interest in using Choi or Pennington as cheap daily options. Look elsewhere.

Angels | No more switch-hitting for Ji-Man Choi

Mon, 14 Mar 2016 22:35:39 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Ji-Man Choi will focus on hitting left-handed for the time being, according to manager Mike Scioscia, abandoning switch hitting. "He's going to focus on left-handed all the way," Scioscia said Monday, March 14. "His minor league numbers, left on left, are good."

Fantasy Tip: Choi is a Rule 5 pick trying to make the team, or he will be returned to the Seattle Mariners. Whichever organization he ends up, he isn't much of a fantasy asset at this juncture.

Angels | Ji-Man Choi working as switch hitter

Sat, 27 Feb 2016 19:14:43 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 1B Ji-Man Choi is working as a switch hitter, trying to improve his versatility and win a role off the bench. He was selected in December in the Rule 5 draft, and he could help off the bench and serve as an occasional starter in left field and as an alternative option at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Choi has a .404 on-base percentage in six professional seasons in the minors, and his positional versatility should help him. Still, he has work to do before he is a bona fide fantasy option.

Angels | Daniel Nava could take over LF

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 16:20:31 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava is set up to get the most plate appearances in left field, though he would still likely sit against most left-handed pitchers. OF Craig Gentry, a right-handed hitter, would "start basically every third day" if that's the case, but there will probably be an open competition in spring training for the job. This would also include OFs Ji-Man Choi, Rafael Ortega and Todd Cunningham.

Fantasy Tip: Clearly, Nava and Gentry would have the highest ceiling out of everyone in this competition, especially the former, who slashed a respectable .278/.364/.403 with the Boston Red Sox from 2012-14. Gentry, meanwhile, has pretty much always been a platoon player so that will probably remain the case in Anaheim. Keep an eye on Nava if he prevails with the job.

Mariners | Ji-Man Choi experimenting with switch-hitting

Sat, 24 Jan 2015 11:12:34 -0800

Seattle Mariners minor league 1B Ji-Man Choi, who spent last season with Triple-A Tacoma, surprised some club officials when he decided to experiment with switch-hitting while playing in the Venezuelan Winter League. Choi is a natural left-handed batter and has been working recently with minor league hitting instructor Lee May Jr., who said his right-handed swing "looked pretty good." Mariners officials appear willing to allow this experiment to proceed, although farm director Chris Gwynn said he will be asked to return to hitting exclusively left-handed if things aren't going well.
