Jets | Players not backing Mark Sanchez?

Thu, 23 May 2013 10:33:55 -0700

An anonymous New York Jets player said that the team is skeptical about QB Mark Sanchez and his ability to be successful. "Everyone on the team likes Mark personally, but there's a general feeling among some of the players that maybe it's time to give someone else a chance." The player said 80 to 90 percent of the roster agrees with that statement. Sanchez is still trying to figure out the team's new West Coast offense.

Fantasy Tip: Any way you look at it, the Jets' quarterback situation won't be pretty this year. Sanchez or Geno Smith, whoever wins the competition, won't be endorsed for anything more than a poor QB2 this year.

Jets | Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith struggle

Wed, 22 May 2013 12:25:36 -0700

New York Jets QBs Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith both struggled during organized team activities Wednesday, May 22, with Sanchez completing only six of his 11 passes, including three interceptions. Sanchez worked with the first-team unit, although he and Smith received basically the same number of snaps. Smith completed only three of 10 passes with an interception.

Fantasy Tip: Not a good start to the team's quarterback competition. It's probably best to stay away from whoever wins this starting gig. There should be plenty of higher upside options for your QB2 spot as Week 1 approaches.

Jets | Could name starting QB soon

Tue, 21 May 2013 11:03:35 -0700

New York Jets QBs Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job this offseason, but the quarterback competition could be settled well before the team even heads to training camp in July. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg wants one of the two QBs to separate himself from the other, and if that happens this week, the team isn't against naming their starter early. "Common sense tells you that you hope it's quick, but this is going to be a full blown competition. Period," Mornhinweg said.

Sanchez, because of his experience, has the advantage to take control of the early competition. Smith, who spent much of his college days in shotgun, is spending a ton of time taking snaps from under center during OTAs with quarterbacks coach David Lee. Mornhinweg knows that the longer their QB competition lasts, the less time the winner will have to work with the first-team offense. The team also won't just name a starter to name a starter, they want a clear winner in the competition.

Fantasy Tip: Sanchez has the leg up on Smith from the start, but that could change. Neither quarterback will be a solid fantasy backup QB, though, because of the team's lack of solid receiving threats and the fact that either QB could be replaced at any point during the season due to poor performance.

Jets | Mark Sanchez should have edge on starting job

Wed, 15 May 2013 14:11:52 -0700

Jets | Geno Smith expects to learn from Mark Sanchez

Mon, 13 May 2013 16:19:47 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he expects to learn from QB Mark Sanchez even though they will be competing for the starting quarterback job. "He's a guy I'm going to be in competition with but at the same time I'm going to learn from," Smith said. "He's a professional, he's done it for several years. He's carried himself well in my opinion. Everything that he's done, the ups and downs, the overall perception of him may be swayed depending on the games he's played, but I think he's a pretty good quarterback and I like forward to competing with him and being around him."

Jets | Raving about Geno Smith

Mon, 13 May 2013 07:17:03 -0700

The New York Jets are "smitten" with rookie QB Geno Smith, and it's beginning to look more likely that the starting job is his to lose.

Fantasy Tip: Mark Sanchez may need David Garrard to be cut and Smith to fall on his face in order to keep his job. Smith isn't in an ideal situation with few targets to work with. We can't see him being worth more than a dynasty league pickup right now.

Fri, 10 May 2013 14:40:18 -0700

Jets | More on Geno Smith

Fri, 03 May 2013 20:32:35 -0700

According to a league source, at least one quarterback-needy team in the Top 10 of the 2013 NFL Draft passed on New York Jets QB Geno Smith because of the diva attitude he displayed during a pre-draft visit. "He's going to have a tough time in New York," an anonymous NFC scout said Friday, May 3. "Right now, he's coming off as a spoiled, pampered brat."

Jets | Could Mark Sanchez start in 2013?

Fri, 03 May 2013 07:04:48 -0700

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez could very well be the team's starting quarterback this upcoming season. Sanchez may provide the team's best option at quarterback because QB Geno Smith is considered raw at this point and QB David Garrard is 35 years old and hasn't played an NFL game since 2010. Head coach Rex Ryan is likely coaching for his job this year, so he likely will pick the starting quarterback who will best help him win games in the short term.

Jets | Character issues for Geno Smith?

Thu, 02 May 2013 06:35:00 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith reportedly fell in the NFL Draft because teams are concerned he does not listen to coaches and does not take constructive criticism well. "His biggest problem is that he doesn't know what he doesn't know," said a league executive, who spent extensive time assessing Smith before the draft. "I'm not sure he knows how to take instruction because he pretty much wouldn't listen or talk to our coaches … he's talented. He can sling it, he can fit it into tight spots, he can do a lot of things and I think he wants to be good. But you can't tell him anything right now. He's tuned out because he thinks he's got it all down." Two sources also indicated that when Smith went on some visits to teams, rather than interact with coaches and front-office people, he would spend much of his time on his cell phone, texting friends or reading Twitter. "All these other players who were in there were talking to the coaches, trying to get to know people and he was over there by himself," one of the sources said. "That's not what you want out of your quarterback."

"There is no guarantee that Mark will be our starter, there's no question," Ryan said. "That job's going to have to be earned."

New York Jets QB Geno Smith fired his agents after his stock dropped in the first round of the NFL draft. "I don't want to shed too much light on it," Smith said on Sirius radio on Tuesday about firing his agents. "The thing that I can tell you is that it's not because of the whole draft experience. It's not because of one particular incident. There's a number of things. And that story, you know, that battle will be fought on a different day. As of right now, I don't feel too comfortable talking about all the details of it."

I'm extremely ecstatic to be a part of the Jets organization… I'm glad they picked me where they did."

The New York Jets selected West Virginia QB Geno Smith with the 39th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
