NFL | Multiple teams interested in Geno Smith

Mon, 13 Mar 2017 18:35:09 -0700

Free-agent QB Geno Smith (Jets) is drawing interest from the Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns, in addition to the New York Giants, whom he visited on Saturday, March 11.

Fantasy Tip: Smith hasn't been a starting quarterback since the 2014 season, and even then he was an irrelevant name in just about all fantasy leagues. Even if he were to sign with the Browns and somehow end up as their starter, it would probably remain that way.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, Oct. 26, after a second opinion confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Fantasy Tip: Ryan Fitzpatrick will remain a matchup play in fantasy DFS. If your starter is on a bye this week, he has a good matchup against the Cleveland Browns.

Jets | Geno Smith done for the season

Tue, 25 Oct 2016 23:07:42 -0700

Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) did suffer a torn ACL, according to head coach Todd Bowles, and will not play again this season. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will start in Week 8.

Fantasy Tip: If for some reason you picked up Smith before last week you can go ahead and drop him. Fitzpatrick, meanwhile, could have at least a little short-term value with a matchup against the Cleveland Browns on tap.

Jets | Geno Smith likely has torn ACL

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 11:08:52 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is believed to have torn his ACL in a Week 7 win over the Baltimore Ravens, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: This should end Smith's season and likely his career with the Jets. After his one-week benching, Ryan Fitzpatrick will return to the starting lineup and should remain the clear starter in New York, at least until the Jets are mathematically eliminated from the playoffs.

Mon, 24 Oct 2016 06:35:37 -0700

Updating previous reports, New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is believed to be OK, and the MRI on his knee is being deemed precautionary, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Smith would have a good matchup against the Cleveland Browns if he's fit to suit up for Week 8. However, he hasn't done enough to warrant a start in fantasy outside of two-QB leagues.

Jets | Geno Smith injures knee

Sun, 23 Oct 2016 11:19:38 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) suffered a knee injury in Week 7 and is considered questionable to return.

Fantasy Tip: The severity of Smith's injury is not known, so owners will need to look for an update on his status after the game. Ryan Fitzpatrick would regain the starting job if Smith is out for an extended period of time but should not be a starting option in fantasy leagues.

Jets | Geno Smith to be the starter

Wed, 19 Oct 2016 08:28:31 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is expected to be named the starting quarterback Wednesday, Oct. 19, according to league sources.

Fantasy Tip: The move sends Ryan Fitzpatrick to the bench and rids him of much value to fantasy rosters. The Baltimore Ravens don't pose a huge matchup liability, but Smith has not shown much to suggest he's worth owning in fantasy outside of two-QB leagues.

Jets | Geno Smith not expected to start

Mon, 17 Oct 2016 21:39:00 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith took over in the fourth quarter of the Week 6 game against the Arizona Cardinals Monday, Oct. 17. He completed four of his six pass attempts for 31 yards with one interception. Smith isn't expected to move into the starting lineup. "(QB Ryan Fitzpatrick) will be back next week," head coach Todd Bowles said. "The game was 28-3. There was eight minutes left in the game. We weren't doing anything else. I just wanted to get Smith some reps."

Fantasy Tip: It isn't exactly like Smith is a savior. We've seen him before, and he turns it over quite frequently, too, especially on the road. For now, avoid Smith in all fantasy leagues, although he would be worth a look in two-QB leagues if he gets the starting nod.

Jets | Geno Smith solidified as No. 2 QB

Fri, 02 Sep 2016 12:32:08 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is solidified as the club's No. 2 quarterback, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Fantasy Tip: Although he's re-established himself as the backup quarterback for Gang Green, Smith can safely be ignored in all fantasy leagues. Even if starter Ryan Fitzpatrick goes down with an injury, Smith still isn't worth deploying until he exhibits some consistency, which he never did during his previous stint as the Jets' starter.

Tue, 30 Aug 2016 23:19:23 -0700

Jets | NYJ may keep four QBs on roster

Sun, 21 Aug 2016 23:51:14 -0700

The New York Jets are leaning toward keeping four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, with QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Bryce Petty, Geno Smith and Christian Hackenberg making the cut.

Fantasy Tip: Whether this is a wise idea remains to be seen, but the Jets would certainly have no shortage of signal-callers to pick from in case of injury. Fitzpatrick would be the No. 1, with Petty and Smith battling for the No. 2 spot. The winner of that backup job might be worth watching in deeper leagues in case Fitzpatrick falters or gets hurt.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith worked with the second-team offense and connected on deep balls to WR Kyle S. Williams and WR Chandler Worthy during practice Friday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: The return of Ryan Fitzpatrick has Smith ticketed for a backup role and has erased his fantasy potential.

Jets | Geno Smith sticking around?

Fri, 29 Jul 2016 18:44:24 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is expected to remain with the team in 2016, general manager Mike Maccagnan said Friday, July 29.

Fantasy Tip: While Smith may stick on the roster, he has zero fantasy value as long as Ryan Fitzpatrick is healthy.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick working with starters

Thu, 28 Jul 2016 12:34:41 -0700

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is receiving most of the snaps with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, July 28. QB Geno Smith has also received a few snaps with the starters.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick will be the starting quarterback for the Jets this season with Smith likely being the primary backup. Fitzpatrick is coming off a terrific 2015 season and will have Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker back this season. He should be considered a low-end No. 1 or an elite No. 2 quarterback in most leagues.

Jets | Bad news for Geno Smith, Bryce Petty

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 18:59:52 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith and QB Bryce Petty were atop the depth chart, but now that the team has re-signed QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to a one-year deal either Smith or Petty might be looking for a new team by the regular season opener.

Fantasy Tip: Smith was a Top 25 fantasy option before the Fitzpatrick signing, now he should go mostly undrafted in all fantasy leagues. Petty needs to have a huge training camp and preseason, taking a necessary step forward.

Jets | Todd Bowles confident in Geno Smith

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 22:48:21 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith remains in line to start with the contract impasse between the organization and free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Head coach Todd Bowles said he is confident in Smith as the starter. "I think Geno can be a good starter, but he's got to prove it in training camp like everybody else," Bowles said. "It's not just about the quarterback position. You got to have a team around that position to play ball, but he's been in the system a year. He has a better grasp of it going into training camp and we'll see what he does."

Fantasy Tip: Smith has completed 57.9 percent of his 852 career pass attempts for 5,836 yards, 27 touchdowns and 36 interceptions. His first full season was a train wreck, but his 2014 wasn't all that bad. He also has that dual-threat dimension to make him a really, really poor man's Cam Newton when he is under center. If he hangs onto the starting job he is a Top 25 fantasy option at his position.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick situation could linger

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 16:37:08 -0700

It looks as though the New York Jets may wait to view the practice repetitions of QB Geno Smith in training camp before there is more movement in talks with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets), according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: The stalemate continues. It's probably in the best interests of both parties to have a reunion, but both sides are being stubborn. If Fitz doesn't return, Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker will surely suffer. If the QB does return, he's a high-end fantasy backup, at best. Stay tuned.

Jets | New York won't wait forever on QB

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 15:24:16 -0700

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's (Jets) impasse with the New York Jets does have an expiration date, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said the Jets will rely on QB Geno Smith to be their starter if Fitzpatrick's contract is not worked out by a certain time. Bowles didn't say when exactly that time would be, but he indicated that it wouldn't be preseason. Fitzpatrick would start if/when he does re-sign, though.

Fantasy Tip: Fitzpatrick would be the only Jets quarterback with any meaningful fantasy value if he does return. Smith is a career fantasy backup, while Fitzpatrick is in low-end QB1 to high-end QB2 territory.

Jets | Geno Smith practiced with top receivers

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 16:20:15 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has thrown to Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown, New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. and Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry this offseason. Landry said eight or nine players gathered twice a week for workouts in South Florida.

Fantasy Tip: The talent of the receivers does not necessarily result in an increase in the talent of the quarterback. Smith is an inconsistent quarterback, and he won't even start if/when Ryan Fitzpatrick is re-signed. You can continue to keep Smith off your fantasy blueprint.

Jets | Brandon Marshall praises Geno Smith

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 21:54:29 -0700

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said it seems like the game has slowed down for QB Geno Smith, and he added that Smith has been playing with poise during OTAs.

Fantasy Tip: Depending on how the Ryan Fitzpatrick situation plays out, Smith could be starting for the Jets in Week 1. However, there is nothing in Smith's history that suggests he can be more than a low-end fantasy backup.

Jets | New York comfortable with quarterbacks

Sun, 29 May 2016 11:08:11 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is currently slated to start at quarterback with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) still not re-signed. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, however, said the Jets are comfortable with whoever wins the starting job.

Fantasy Tip: This implies that rookie Christian Hackenberg may have a chance at the starting job, but it would behoove the Jets to bring back Fitzpatrick. If Fitzpatrick somehow isn't brought back, then Smith would be the better option, but he shouldn't be starting for any fantasy squads.

Jets | Geno Smith receiving first-team reps

Thu, 26 May 2016 10:38:28 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is receiving first-team repetitions ahead of QBs Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg during organized team activities. However, the coaching staff hasn't defined the specific positions on the depth chart for the quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Smith will likely be the Jets' starter unless they re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick. Smith has talent but has been wildly inconsistent when he's started for Gang Green. If he enters as the starter in Week 1, he's firmly in the fantasy backup consideration.

Jets | New York could keep four quarterbacks

Tue, 03 May 2016 16:15:31 -0700

New York Jets QBs Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, and possibly free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) could all be on New York's roster when the 2016 regular season commences. General manager Mike Maccagnan said if it's in the best interest of the team then they will keep four quarterbacks. "It's been done before," Maccagnan said. "To me, it's a position where you have to take some time to really invest, grow and develop players."

Fantasy Tip: The Jets aren't investing as much as they should be, though, as Fitzpatrick is still on the free-agent market. Smith is in line to start right now, but he has proven to be too inconsistent to consider starting in tradition fantasy leagues. Fitzpatrick has the most value for the Jets and for fantasy purposes.

Jets | General manager excited for Geno Smith

Tue, 03 May 2016 13:31:38 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith could start for the Jets in 2016 if free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) is not re-signed. That prospect has general manager Mike Maccagnan excited. "Right now, Geno has been a starter for us, and actually played quite well prior to getting hurt last year, and was doing a good job in the offseason," Maccagnan said. "So we're kind of excited to see what Geno can do, coming back. And we feel good about that."

Fantasy Tip: The Jets do still want to re-sign Fitzpatrick, and he's definitely a more reliable fantasy option than Smith. Even if Smith somehow does start, he shouldn't be starting on your fantasy teams.

Jets | Geno Smith No. 1 QB for now

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 07:34:46 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback when offseason workouts begin, but the team is still looking to re-sign free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Fantasy Tip: Smith will work with the first-team offense as long as the team does not re-sign Fitzpatrick and likely would lose that spot if Fitzpatrick returns. Smith could be the starting quarterback in 2016 if another quarterback is not added but would only be a No. 2 quarterback in deeper leagues.

Jets | Todd Bowles lauds Geno Smith

Tue, 22 Mar 2016 09:55:06 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith showed maturity in 2015, and head coach Todd Bowles expressed confidence in New York's contingency plans at quarterback if they can't re-sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. "We thought Geno matured last year," Bowles said. "It's something you couldn't see because he didn't play as much, but you saw it in practice and you saw it in his demeanor in off-the-field stuff. Geno is still our quarterback, he's still on our team."

Fantasy Tip: If Fitzpatrick doesn't come back, expect the Jets to bring in another quarterback to compete with Smith for the starting job. Smith has shown flashes of brilliance in the NFL, but he's been far too inconsistent for fantasy owners to draft him as anything more than a backup if he's starting in 2016.

Jets | No rush in Ryan Fitzpatrick talks

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 16:55:33 -0700

The New York Jets have no sense of urgency in contract talks to re-sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to owner Woody Johnson. Fitzpatrick could miss the entire offseason program because of his familiarity with offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's offense. General manager Mike Maccagnan said QB Geno Smith is a "definite possibility" as a replacement if Fitzpatrick doesn't return.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets and Fitz are at a stalemate right now, so stay tuned. The Amish Rifle would have the highest fantasy value if he stayed in New York, where he set career highs last year, but even then he'd be a high-end fantasy backup, at best.

Jets | Geno Smith ready to lead team?

Sun, 20 Mar 2016 16:56:30 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is capable of leading the franchise if free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick doesn't re-sign, according to free-agent OG Willie Colon. "I think he's taken on everything," said Colon. "I think he's ready to rise. I still have confidence in him. I think with the pieces we have around him, and continue to put around him, he can be successful. I honestly believe that. I think Geno's a good quarterback."

Fantasy Tip: Smith would have solid weapons to work with on offense if he becomes the starter for the Jets, but expecting him to be more than a mid-range QB2 in 2016 would be asking for disappointment.

Jets | Geno Smith remains backup

Wed, 24 Feb 2016 11:53:09 -0800

New York Jets QB Geno Smith remains the team's backup quarterback right now, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Fantasy Tip: The Jets will work to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick after he produced a fine 2015 campaign that fell just short of a playoff berth. As long as Smith is holding a clipboard, he has zero fantasy appeal.
