Jets | Geno Smith dominates first-team reps

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 09:32:24 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith logged three-quarters of the first-team practice reps for the second straight day on Friday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: He's holding off Michael Vick but still will have to show marked improvement as we inch closer to fantasy drafts. For those willing to throw a late stab on him, they could be rewarded with stronger week-to-week value, or simply will move on with little consequence.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is receiving most of the first-team snaps in practice Thursday, July 24. Smith took 13 first-team snaps, and QB Michael Vick took four first-team snaps.

Fantasy Tip: Even if Smith wins this job, he is not a draft worthy option at this point. Consider him a QB3 at best.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is "head and shoulders" better than last year, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

"And from what we've been told and what we've been working toward, it's Geno's team, and Mike's coming in to kind of (fill) a supporting role. If anything happens to Geno, we have a proven starter and a proven winner backing him up. That's the direction we're moving."

Wed, 18 Jun 2014 13:29:15 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is having an outstanding offseason and is quite different in comparison to last season with 16 games under his belt, according to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

Fantasy Tip: The optimism from Mornhinweg is encouraging, but Smith remains undraftable as anything more than a low-end QB2 in standard formats.

Jets | Geno Smith has improved

Wed, 18 Jun 2014 11:05:05 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith "is a tremendously improved player right now," quarterbacks coach David Lee recently said.

Fantasy Tip: That's great and all, but he's still not exactly a reliable fantasy quarterback. It's best to draft him as a backup or quarterback-by-committee option.

Jets | Geno Smith, Eric Decker developing chemistry

Tue, 17 Jun 2014 09:35:46 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith and WR Eric Decker appear to be developing some nice chemistry in the first day of mandatory minicamp Tuesday, June 17.

Fantasy Tip: It's way early in offseason workouts, but it's a good sign that Smith and Decker are on the same page already. Decker will be the Jets' go-to receiver this year. The maturation of Smith will directly influence how productive Decker can be this year.

Jets | Michael Vick thinks he can still start

Wed, 04 Jun 2014 16:29:35 -0700

New York Jets QB Michael Vick still considers himself a starting quarterback in the NFL, despite the fact that he's playing second fiddle to QB Geno Smith during organized team activities. "(Geno) knows I'm going to push him to the limit, and I want him to push me," Vick said. "There's going to be times where he's gonna have to pick me up, where I'm gonna have to pick him up. I'm always gonna be there for him, always gonna help him out, and I think he's done a great job."

Fantasy Tip: Unless something drastic changes during training camp, Smith will be the team's starter at QB entering Week 1. That could change once the season starts, but until then, Vick should be left to the waiver wire.

Jets | Geno Smith believes there is a competition

Wed, 04 Jun 2014 13:05:36 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he believes in competition, and will compete every day. "I'm looking forward to working with Mike," Smith said. "When I was with Mark Sanchez, we did a good job of doing the same thing we competed hard. That's what we do around here. We're going to compete on a daily basis, all of us, Matt Simms, Taj Boyd, every guy on this team is competing. It's a good sign for this team because it makes us get better day to day."

Fri, 30 May 2014 17:33:59 -0700

"You know, right now, it's his team. But, I mean, at the end of the day, you want to go out there and do everything that's possible to win."

Jets | Marty Mornhinweg gives take on QB competition

Thu, 29 May 2014 13:49:23 -0700

New York Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said there is "competition" between QBs Geno Smith and Michael Vick. "It may not be quite like the competition we had last year, where everything was 50-50," said Mornhinweg, alluding to the open competition between Smith and QB Mark Sanchez. "Mike has all that experienced banked. We're trying to continue the progress with Geno and then have Mike ready to go. It's just that simple, and Mike knows exactly what expectations and roles he has." Mornhinweg said earlier this offseason that Smith will receive more practice repetitions than Vick.

Fantasy Tip: Essentially, Mornhinweg is agreeing with Vick's statement last week that the team expects Smith to be the starting QB in Week 1. Vick will fill in if there is an injury or if Smith fails to impress early in the season. Consider Smith to be a very shaky QB2.

Thu, 22 May 2014 15:21:41 -0700

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is working out in Florida with Jets WRs Jeremy Kerley, Jacoby Ford, Stephen Hill and Greg Salas.

Fantasy Tip: Well, it can't hurt Smith's fantasy value. None of the receivers involved are necessarily fantasy targets, but Hill and Kerley could emerge as waiver wire additions. Will Smith improve enough to win the job and the hearts of fantasy owners? "Doubtful" seems like a kind response.

Jets | Geno Smith in the lead?

Tue, 25 Mar 2014 08:51:16 -0700

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan indicated that QB Geno Smith will enter offseason practices in the early lead in the quarterback competition between QB Michael Vick, and Smith will work with the first team when practices start next month. However, Ryan isn't ruling out Vick as the Week 1 starter when the season comes. "It's going to be really interesting to watch that competition unfold. I've said this before -- Geno Smith is going to be hard to beat out," Ryan said. Ryan also said the team may have personnel packages that include both quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: With the Jets, there's no telling who will win the job here until much further down the road. Ryan has some loyalty toward Smith, but Vick has the experience in the league and can be more productive if he stays healthy. Either way, it's probably unlikely that you'll want to take the chance on either QB with a QB2 spot on your roster.

Jets | Michael Vick set to sign

Fri, 21 Mar 2014 15:33:07 -0700

The New York Jets will sign free-agent QB Michael Vick (Eagles) to an undisclosed deal, according to team and league sources.

Fantasy Tip: Vick will be given every chance in training camp to beat out Geno Smith as the team's starter. Vick, if he can stay healthy, remains intriguing, but only as a flier for a backup fantasy QB. There's no guarantee he even wins the job, though, and New York's weapons on offense are much less explosive and dynamic than what Vick was working with when he started in Philly.

Jets | Michael Vick, Geno Smith would compete

Thu, 20 Mar 2014 14:03:50 -0700

If the New York Jets sign free-agent QB Michael Vick (Eagles), the team plans for him to compete for the starting quarterback job with QB Geno Smith, according to a team source. Vick has history with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg from their time with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Fantasy Tip: Vick is more experienced, albeit injury-prone, but if he is signed and wins the starting job, he'd be a flier as a fantasy backup. Smith's inconsistencies in his rookie season won't drastically improve if he's the starter just because Eric Decker is in town. Consider Smith undraftable in standard leagues if he opens Week 1 as the starter.

New York Jets QB Geno Smith expects to be the team's starting quarterback next year even if the team is hesitant to name him as the starter. Smith isn't bothered at all that head coach Rex Ryan refuses to commit to him in 2014. "It just means more competition," Smith said. "It gives me that fire I've always had in me. ... It's going to make me work harder, make me tougher, make me work that much harder in OTAs if I have someone to compete against."

Jets | Rex Ryan praises Geno Smith

Fri, 31 Jan 2014 10:40:30 -0800

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan praised QB Geno Smith for how he finished the 2013 season. "I think there are very few players that grew as much as Geno did," Ryan said. "He had to come a million miles, and he did. When you look at the way he closed out, we saw our team ascending and part of that was the way Geno played. Statistically, he had the second-highest quarterback rating over the last month of the season. I think that's something that people don't focus on, but it's a fact."

Jets | Rex Ryan wont commit to Geno Smith as starter

Fri, 31 Jan 2014 10:38:02 -0800

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan would not name QB Geno Smith the starter for Week 1 in 2014, saying it is too early in the off season to make that decision. "With anything, you can't say anything with any certainty right now because you're just starting the off season," he said. "You don't know who your roster is going to be and things like that. It's probably not the best thing to say this guy is going to be a starter or this or that. Let's just let it play out."

Fantasy Tip: Even without Ryan saying it, Smith is the favorite to start at quarterback in Week 1, assuming the team does not make a move at the position in the off season.

He doesn't leave until 7:00 at night, trying to understand defenses and understand where he needs to get better at. Head coach Rex Ryan stopped short of saying Smith would be the starter heading into training camp next year. "We're all excited about having Geno as part of the New York Jets," Idzik said, "but we will always look to improve any position." Jets | Geno Smith gets a vote of confidence

Fri, 20 Dec 2013 23:14:11 -0800

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is second in the NFL with 21 interceptions thrown, but he has the confidence of Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. The play caller noted that while it may not appear as though Smith has improved from afar, the rookie passer certainly has made progress. Mornhinweg gave Smith credit for his intelligence, athleticism, talent and instincts.

Fantasy Tip: It is believed Smith is auditioning for his own job in 2014, although it appears likely he will receive some form of competition. He has a long way to go before becoming a viable weekly fantasy starter, but a full offseason with the first-team offense and an improved cast of weapons could do wonders. Smith will need to make huge strides before he can be drafted in standard formats.
