Elisabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Dee Brown is confident in his role despite the addition of RB Michael Bennett. "I wasn't discouraged," Brown said. You still have to perform and you still have a job to do."

Chiefs | Brown ready for No. 2 role

Fri, 14 Jul 2006 05:44:20 -0700

Elizabeth Merrill, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Dee Brown is ready to be the team's primary backup to starting RB Larry Johnson. "I will be Larry Johnson's backup," Brown says straight-faced, and then repeats himself. "I'm ready, and you can capitalize that in bold print." This year appears to be Brown's best NFL opportunity and he knows it. RB Priest Holmes' neurological issues are still lingering, the Chiefs have promised to run the ball more this fall, and even Johnson can't carry the ball 500 times. Brown is a 5-foot-10, 210-pound analytical runner with good hands who can make defenders miss in small spaces. Much like Holmes, Brown is a good change-of-pace back for the Chiefs. Brown should be busy this season. Head coach Herman Edwards wants to run the ball about 35 times a game and knows that Johnson, who ran for nine straight 100-yard games, will need some breathers. Being the No. 2 guy in Kansas City could be a productive gig for Brown.

Chiefs | Edwards needs to figure out running back situation

Wed, 05 Jul 2006 17:19:49 -0700

Jim Corbett, of the USA Today, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Herman Edwards faces the challenge of figuring out the team's running back situation for 2006. It's impossible for one running back, no matter how gifted, to hold up under the 500- to 550-carry load Edwards plans for a more run-heavy offense. It's not that RB Larry Johnson isn't tough enough to withstand a heavy load. He led the AFC with 1,750 yards on 336 carries last season. But it's an issue of having something left to be an effective closer come the playoffs, especially because Edwards believes the best way to improve a 25th-ranked defense is to keep it fresh by running more. "You need two runners in this game," Edwards says. "One guy can't do it alone. We want to run the ball 500-550 times. They ran 520 times here last year. You're lucky if one guy gets 300 carries. I'm hoping that other guy will be RB Priest Holmes. Priest wants to come back, and I'm anticipating he will. He's in great shape. He's hoping to be medically cleared in early July out in California." If Holmes is unable to return or begins the season on the physically unable to perform list, RB Dee Brown is expected to be Johnson's primary backup.

Chiefs | D. Brown No. 2 for now

Sat, 24 Jun 2006 21:25:28 -0700

Sports Xchange reports Kansas City Chiefs RB Dee Brown emerged from spring drills as the backup to starting RB Larry Johnson. However, head coach Herm Edwards also made it clear that he still thinks Johnson's backup may be a more established player, RB Priest Holmes. "I'm still anticipating Priest coming back," Edwards said again this week. "If he does, then we've got two starting running backs, and not many teams have that luxury. If Priest isn't the guy, then Dee Brown gets the first shot. If he can't do the job, we look some place else."

Chiefs | Team looking for backup running back

Wed, 07 Jun 2006 06:50:46 -0700

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports the Kansas City Chiefs are unsure if RB Priest Holmes (neck) will be with the team for the 2006 season. Head coach Herman Edwards said the team will not wait for Holmes indefinitely and added, "You're always looking to upgrade, and that's what's good about the time between now and opening day. There will be some guys on certain teams that people are willing to let go. We'll evaluate the guys we have here and our scouts will evaluate guys on other teams, especially if Priest doesn't come back." Edwards would like to run the ball 35 times a game and doesn't plan to have RB Larry Johnson carry all of that load. Of the current running backs on the team, Johnson is the biggest at 230 pounds. The rest are lighter, finesse runners with Holmes at 213 pounds, RB Dee Brown at 210 pounds and RB Quentin Griffin at 195 pounds. Edwards said, "We'll go to a change of pace. We'll do a little something different with those guys than we'll do with LJ. We're going to run the ball 500 times. We can't expect him to run it 500 times."

Mon, 04 Oct 2004 17:52:28 -0700

Cleveland Browns RB James Jackson was inactive for the Sunday, Oct. 3, game against the Washington Redskins. According to head coach Butch Davis, RB Dee Brown was active instead because he plays on more special teams. Jackson hasn't been happy with his role behind RBs William Green and Lee Suggs, and his Week 4 inactive status will not help. The Browns have already passed on a trade offer from the Arizona Cardinals for a 2005 fourth-round pick this year.
