Bills | Matt Simms might still make roster

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 19:35:27 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Simms is not believed to be in line to make the 53-man roster, and "the odds are stacked against" him according to head coach Rex Ryan. However, if the team elects to cut QBs Matt Cassel or EJ Manuel, that could change things dramatically.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor named starter in Buffalo

Mon, 31 Aug 2015 08:27:06 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor was named the starting quarterback Monday, Aug. 31, over QB Matt Cassel an QB EJ Manuel.

Fantasy Tip: Taylor is a developing quarterback with some wheels. He's not as polished as a passer. He'll be a low-end QB2 selection that you can probably take a flyer on late in drafts.

Bills | EJ Manuel, Tyrod Taylor play well

Sun, 30 Aug 2015 07:05:59 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel went 7-for-8 for 170 yards and two touchdowns in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29. QB Tyrod Taylor went 12-for-13 for 122 yards and a rushing touchdown during the game.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel could be back in the competition for the starting job after his performance, but all three quarterbacks played well in the game. The Bills are expected to name a starter in the near future but that player will be no more than a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues.

Bills | Buffalo QBs should play equally

Sat, 29 Aug 2015 12:07:05 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor are expected to play a series or two each Saturday, Aug. 29, versus the Pittsburgh Steelers. Manuel will start.

Fantasy Tip: This could be the last big opportunity for all three quarterbacks to prove they deserve the Bills' starting quarterback job. Cassel has the experience, while Taylor and Manuel both offer more with their running ability, specifically Taylor. Whoever starts should not be a starting fantasy quarterback, however.

Bills | EJ Manuel starting preseason game

Thu, 27 Aug 2015 10:56:00 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will start the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel has been a distant third in the QB competition for most of camp. This could be his final chance to impress. He's not worth drafting in single-year leagues.

Bills | EJ Manuel wants to stay in Buffalo

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:57:45 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said he loves being with the Bills and wants to stay with the team, despite seemingly being the third quarterback on the depth chart. Manuel has rolled well with the punches, however, saying he's taking what is given to him and just doing his best. He is also looking forward to Buffalo's third preseason game this weekend. "I don't know how it's going to play out as far as the game yet, but for me, whatever reps I do get, I just try to take advantage of them like I did the past two weeks," Manuel said.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel played well last week against the Cleveland Browns, throwing for 111 yards and one touchdown. Unfortunately for Manuel, Tyrod Taylor and Matt Cassel haven't really done anything to force the Bills to demote them. Manuel may very well make the final roster, but it doesn't look like he'll start at this point.

Bills | Buffalo to use rotation at QB?

Tue, 25 Aug 2015 11:31:44 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel may each be rotated in with the starting unit Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Joe Buscaglia of WGR Sports Radio 550. All three quarterbacks have received first-team repetitions the last two practices.

Fantasy Tip: Taylor was impressive when he started last week in the Bills' second preseason contest. Taylor gives the Bills more options with the offense, but Cassel has much more experience. Manuel seems to be the third option. None of them are worth starting on your fantasy squad.

Bills | Buffalo could keep three QBs

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 10:38:12 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel could all be on the Bills' final roster, according to head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan said there is a high possibility that the Bills could keep all three quarterbacks, adding that Cassel, Taylor and Manuel would all receive playing time in their next preseason game.

Fantasy Tip: Taylor has looked the most promising this preseason. He and Cassel seem to be the two favorites to start with Manuel lurking behind. Ryan may not name a starter until the preseason concludes. Whoever starts isn't worth starting as your fantasy quarterback.

Bills | All three Bills QBs seeing starter snaps

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 08:49:57 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel have all received snaps with the first-team offense during team drills Saturday, Aug. 22. Cassel was the first quarterback in the drills.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills may allow this competition to continue until the end of the preseason, but owners should receive some information when the team names a starter for the third preseason game. None of the Bills quarterbacks have much fantasy value and would not be more than a No. 2 quarterback in a deeper league.

Bills | Buffalo may wait on QB decision

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 12:15:52 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel are still competing for the starting quarterback job, but head coach Rex Ryan said the team may not announce the starter until Week 1. "This will probably play out," Ryan said. "Indianapolis might not know who the quarterback is until we play them. We may know, but they may not know."

Fantasy Tip: Cassel and Taylor appear to be the major candidates for the job and the third preseason game should answer some questions. Neither quarterback will be a great fantasy option for owners, so the winner of the job should only be seen as a No. 2 quarterback.

Bills | EJ Manuel appears out of race

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 05:42:03 -0700

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel appears to be out of the competition for starting quarterback with QB Matt Cassel and QB Tyrod Taylor. Cassel has shown good decision-making and command on offense. Taylor has had some accuracy issues.

Fantasy Tip: Whichever quarterback comes out as the starter is probably a weak QB2 in two-quarterback leagues.

Bills | EJ Manuel plays with second team

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 13:03:01 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel received second-team repetitions Monday, Aug. 17.

Fantasy Tip: There is a caveat, however. Both Tyrod Taylor and Matt Cassel played with the first team. It looks like Manuel is still third on the quarterback depth chart. Whoever is named starter before the regular season still won't be worth starting on your fantasy roster(s).

Bills | EJ Manuel falling behind

Sat, 15 Aug 2015 18:36:55 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel has fallen behind QB Matt Cassel and QB Tyrod Taylor in the battle for the starting quarterback job because of poor accuracy.

Fantasy Tip: At this point, it sounds like Cassel or Taylor will start for the Bills in Week 1, but regardless of who is under center for Buffalo, don't expect them to provide much help for fantasy teams.

Bills | EJ Manuel running third team

Tue, 11 Aug 2015 08:00:14 -0700

Bills | Three QBs listed as starter

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 14:30:11 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel are all listed as the starting quarterback on the team's depth chart. Cassel, however, will start in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13.

Fantasy Tip: Buffalo's real starting quarterback may not be revealed until after the final preseason game. On paper, Cassel looks to have the best chance to start with his experience. Again, however starts should not be starting for your fantasy squad.

Bills | EJ Manuel struggles Monday

Mon, 10 Aug 2015 10:56:01 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel went 3-for-10 with one interception during practice Monday, Aug. 10.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel is still a candidate for the starting quarterback job but will need to improve during the preseason if he wants to win the job. Manuel would not be a great fantasy option if he wins the starting job.

Bills | Buffalo QB situation remains murky

Fri, 07 Aug 2015 11:02:38 -0700

Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan said a decision on who the team's starting quarterback is between QBs Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor might not be made until the first week of the regular season. Ryan plans to give all three starting candidates first-team repetitions equally in preseason games. The Bills plan to have a large selection of run plays in their playbook this year, and they'll look to take pressure off their quarterback with plenty of run plays.

Fantasy Tip: It just goes to show you how underwhelming Buffalo's quarterback situation is and will continue to be. Fantasy owners should stay as far away from this picture as possible, and make sure to downgrade all of the Bills' skill players in the passing game as a result.

Bills | Buffalo in QB purgatory

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 16:32:58 -0700

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley said the team is "almost in quarterback purgatory" since they don't currently have a franchise quarterback and are unlikely to receive a high draft pick in the coming years. Currently, Buffalo has a three-way quarterback competition between QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel. Whaley said Manuel is a bit behind and the team is looking to see noticeable improvement from him in 2015. Head coach Rex Ryan has been happy with Manuel but would like to see more consistency with his accuracy. Without a franchise quarterback, Ryan expects the team to have a run-heavy playbook from offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Fantasy Tip: Matt Cassel likely has the slight edge right now because of his experience, but nothing about Buffalo's QB picture should make you optimistic for the Bills receiving group. Downgrade each one of their aerial weapons in your draft, including young stud Sammy Watkins, who could turn out to be a bust for his owners expecting too much.

Bills | Buffalo's QB situation unclear

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 06:06:24 -0700

The Buffalo Bills likely wish they could mold QB Matt Cassel's experience with QB Tyrod Taylor's athleticism and QB EJ Manuel's measurables to create a starting quarterback, in the opinion of The Buffalo News writer Tyler Dunne. Cassel appears to be the leader in the clubhouse among the team's quarterbacks. Manuel continues to struggle in practice, and Taylor seems indecisive at times but shows athletic traits.

Fantasy Tip: Holy dumpster fire, Batman! There is nothing redeeming about this situation for fantasy owners. Avoid it at all costs, and downgrade all of Buffalo's weaponry because of the collective mess under center.

Bills | EJ Manuel working with starters

Sat, 01 Aug 2015 07:54:29 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel is working with the first-team offense during practice Saturday, Aug. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel is part of a three-player competition for the starting quarterback job and each player likely will spend time with the starters. Manuel has a chance to win the job if he performs well during training camp and the preseason but would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the job.

Bills | EJ Manuel afraid to cut it loose?

Sat, 04 Jul 2015 17:53:02 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel was called "timid" by former FS Ronde Barber. He holds the ball," Barber said. "He's scared to deliver it when he needs to."

Fantasy Tip: Manuel has a chance to start Week 1 for the Bills, but even as the starter, he is a fringe QB2 at best in Buffalo's run-heavy attack.

Bills | Matt Cassel struggles Wednesday

Thu, 11 Jun 2015 09:53:02 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel threw one interception and almost had two other passes intercepted during practice Wednesday, June 10. Cassel shared first-team reps with QB EJ Manuel during practice.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel will compete with Manuel for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and neither quarterback appears to have a big advantage. Owners probably should consider the winner of the job to be a No. 2 fantasy quarterback this season.

Bills | Still a QB competition in Buffalo

Wed, 10 Jun 2015 15:41:38 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor are still competing for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Rex Ryan. "Wisdom tells me to let I play out, we'll see what happens through the end," Ryan said.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills' quarterback battle could go on well into training camp and the preseason. Whoever ends up starting won't be worth drafting as a starting fantasy quarterback, however.

Bills | Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel split reps

Wed, 03 Jun 2015 09:13:56 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel both worked with the first-team offense during organized team activities Wednesday, June 3.

Fantasy Tip: Both quarterbacks will be competing for the job during training camp, but it does not appear like either quarterback has an advantage at this point. The winner of the competition likely will not have a lot of fantasy value and probably would be a No. 2 quarterback in leagues.

Bills | EJ Manuel adds weight

Sun, 31 May 2015 06:56:11 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said he added around 10 pounds of muscle this offseason in the hopes of staying healthy during the regular season. Manuel said he believes he still has his quickness and the ability to move around.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel will be part of a quarterback competition during training camp, and it is not known if he is the leading candidate at this point. The winner of the competition likely will not be more than a No. 2 quarterback in fantasy leagues this upcoming season.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor garnering praise

Sat, 30 May 2015 05:56:07 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor is in the competition to be the starting quarterback as much as anyone else, according to quarterback coach David Lee. Lee added, "I think he has a beautiful throwing motion and I just have to think we've got to see how accurate he is." Head coach Rex Ryan provided Taylor first-team repetitions along with QBs EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel through the first four workouts. "He is an unknown, never played a whole lot in Baltimore," Ryan said. "I think the ability is hard to ignore, some of the things that he has."

Fantasy Tip: Even if he enters Week 1 with the starting gig, Taylor would be nothing more than a fringe No. 2 quarterback. At this point, he doesn't warrant a draft pick outside of cavernous two-QB leagues, but the Buffalo quarterback situation is worth monitoring. There are a lot of weapons attached to the offense, and their strong defense projects to frequently tilt the field advantage in the offense's favor. Plus, rushing yards can bolster a quarterback's fantasy point total in a hurry, and Taylor has the ability to scamper. Continue to check back for updates on Taylor and the QB battle in Buffalo.

Bills | Buffalo QBs receiving equal reps at OTAs

Wed, 27 May 2015 11:37:32 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel were given equal repetitions during organized team activities Tuesday, May 26. Manuel and Cassel worked with the starters while Taylor and Tuel worked with the backups. Head coach Rex Ryan said he wants to give everyone a fair chance.

Fantasy Tip: Cassel and Manuel are still the two frontrunners for the starting gig, but Taylor has the best chance to give them a run for their money. Whoever starts for the Bills will be a backup fantasy quarterback.

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel will all have a chance to win the starting job, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Tue, 19 May 2015 23:36:15 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel has a firm believer in offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who has said Manuel will not be cut in camp if he doesn't show progress.

Mon, 18 May 2015 07:06:11 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel needs to show serious progress in organized team activities and training camp or he could be released before the season, in the opinion of beat writer Joe Buscaglia.

Fantasy Tip: If Manuel opens the season as the starter, he's at best a midrange QB2.

Bills | Matt Cassel to be backup?

Fri, 15 May 2015 16:32:06 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel is likely to enter Week 1 of the season as the team's backup quarterback, in the opinion of The Buffalo News' Vic Carucci. He also thinks head coach Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Greg Roman are open-minded about QB EJ Manuel and will give him a fair shot to compete for a starting job this summer. If Cassel or QB Tyrod Taylor win the starting job, the Bills would be expected to trade Manuel before outright cutting him.

Fantasy Tip: Until we know who the starter is in Buffalo, you can turn your head the other way. Whoever does wind up starting in Week 1 will probably be considered undraftable in standard fantasy leagues, anyway.

Bills | EJ Manuel likes new offense

Wed, 13 May 2015 10:29:07 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said he likes the new offense that offensive coordinator Greg Roman is bringing to the team. "I just think the dynamics that we have and the personnel that we have, you look at the receivers, running backs and the tight ends we have at the skill positions and the O-linemen getting better, getting stronger, getting nastier," Manuel said. "But with the shifts and motions and the things we'll do to mix it up for a defense is going to be really good. Instead of just being vanilla we'll have a whole lot of different looks for opponents to prepare for."

Fantasy Tip: Manuel will be one of three quarterbacks competing for the starting job during offseason workouts and training camp. Manuel has struggled at times early in his career and would not be more than a No. 2 fantasy quarterback in 2015 if he wins the job.

Bills | Three Buffalo QBs receive equal reps

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 14:12:11 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor each took an equal amount of snaps Tuesday, April 28, at the team's voluntary minicamp. Head coach Rex Ryan didn't name a favorite, saying all three could be [starting] NFL quarterbacks.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever starts for the Bills will have Sammy Watkins and Percy Harvin to throw to and LeSean McCoy behind them, so the supporting cast is there. However, none of the three warrant starter consideration on fantasy squads.

Mon, 13 Apr 2015 13:06:22 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Jeff Tuel and Tyrod Taylor will all receive first-team repetitions in workouts, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills possess one of the least exciting quarterback groups in all the NFL. Manuel and Cassel are the favorite heading into the offseaon. Whoever wins the starting job will have minimal fantasy value, however.

Bills | No leader for BUF quarterback job

Mon, 06 Apr 2015 10:06:36 -0700

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel will receive a fair shot to win the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Rex Ryan. "I'm lining them up to literally have a competition for the position," Ryan said. "People will say, 'Well, is this guy ahead of the other?' There's going to be assumptions, but the great thing is, let it play out. Give both guys the opportunity and then at the end of the day, the cream will rise to the top. It usually does." Ryan did not rule out the possibility of QB Tyrod Taylor winning the job.

Bills | EJ Manuel to have competition

Fri, 20 Mar 2015 21:44:12 -0700

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel is not locked in as the starting quarterback. Head coach Rex Ryan said Friday, March 20, that the quarterback competition will be open. "It's a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that's out there," Ryan said. "We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens. You bring in a veteran like (QB Matt Cassel). He's done some pretty good things in this league. He's got that veteran presence about him. With EJ back there just going into his third year I really believe EJ is going to improve with his fundamentals having (QB coach David Lee) here."

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the three-way battle between EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor will be a fantasy backup at best, but they might be worth using in FantasyScore when the matchup is a favorable one.

Bills | EJ Manuel still Bills' top QB option

Sat, 28 Feb 2015 11:16:58 -0800

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel still seems to be the No. 1 option at quarterback, for now, with Josh McCown heading to the Cleveland Browns. Buffalo could still add a quarterback in free agency or the draft.

Fantasy Tip: There's still no guarantee that Manuel will be the starting quarterback once the season begins as the Bills are indeed expected to be in the quarterback market this offseason. If he does start, Manuel should be considered no more than a fantasy backup.

Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan is excited about QB EJ Manuel, as he told reporters Manuel "has some potential", but the club is still looking for a long-term signal caller.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel's value goes down as long as the Bills search for a new quarterback continues. Right now, he ranks no higher than a QB3 in most leagues. In short, not a solid starter and not even a quality backup for your roster.

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will have a clean slate next season, according to new offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Roman said that Manuel has shown some good things but that his level of consistency needs to be higher.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel will have to make some positive strides in order to be relevant in fantasy football in 2015. He's not worth drafting this year unless you need a low-end backup quarterback.

Bills | EJ Manuel not guaranteed QB job

Wed, 14 Jan 2015 09:35:41 -0800

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will receive the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job but will not be given the job, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: The Bills likely will look to add at least one quarterback through the draft and free agency to compete with Manuel during training camp. The Bills could become more of a running team with offensive coordinator Greg Roman, which could hurt the fantasy value of the starting quarterback. Owners should consider Manuel a weak No. 2 fantasy quarterback if he wins the starting job.

Bills | Doug Whaley still high on EJ Manuel

Wed, 07 Jan 2015 09:33:37 -0800

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel's struggles this past season were related to coaching issues, according to general manager Doug Whaley. Whaley has been telling this to head coaching candidates and has talked in glowing terms about Manuel during interviews, according to a source.

Fantasy Tip: Manuel appears to be the leading candidate for the starting job at this point even though he was benched during the season. Mon, 29 Dec 2014 12:07:52 -0800

Bills | EJ Manuel won't play in Week 17

Wed, 24 Dec 2014 14:51:30 -0800

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will not play at all in Week 17 against the New England Patriots, even though the Bills have been eliminated from the playoffs. QB Kyle Orton will remain the starter for the season finale because he continues "giving the team the best chance to win," according to head coach Doug Marrone. Marrone said he hasn't had any talks with the team brass about the future of the quarterback position for the team. Manuel is due to count $2.4 million against the salary cap next year, and releasing him would create $5.25 million in dead money.

Fantasy Tip: The team's decision not to get a look at Manuel in the season finale with nothing on the line isn't promising for his future with the team. Heading into next year, Manuel shouldn't be on any fantasy football radars.

Bills | EJ Manuel not in plans this year

Thu, 11 Dec 2014 18:29:18 -0800

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will not start again this season if head coach Doug Marrone has the final say. When asked if his decision to stick with QB Kyle Orton as the starter would change if the team fell out of playoff contention, Marrone said, "No. Not for me, unless it changes for somebody else."

Fantasy Tip: Based on the comments, Marrone has no faith in Manuel as a starter, and the only way he will be under center again this season is if Orton were to suffer an injury or if someone above Marrone forced the head coach to make a change.
