Philadelphia Phillies 3B Maikel Franco has impressed manager Ryne Sandberg this spring. 3B Cody Asche is expected to start the year as the starting third baseman, though, with Franco starting out at Class AA or AAA. "He's looked real good at third base," Sandberg said. "He's got a soft glove. He reacts to balls well. The tougher the play, the softer he gets, which for a 21-year-old guy is pretty amazing. And his arm is very good. He made a play the other day behind the bag on the chalk and got it over to first base effortlessly and still had plenty of arm left."

The Philadelphia Phillies have 17 players under contract for a total of $158.83 million in 2014. The rest of the 25-man roster will likely be made up of pre-arbitration eligible players (like OF Domonic Brown and 3B Cody Asche) or non-roster players that make the club out of camp (OF Bobby Abreu).

Philadelphia Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said 3B Cody Asche is the "leading candidate" to enter next season as the team's starting third baseman. "I'd say come in and be ready to win a job," Sandberg said. "You've shown you can play here. You've shown you can play at this level. Come in and be ready to take the job." 3B Maikel Franco had a great minor league season but has yet to play above Class A.

Philadelphia Phillies OF Domonic Brown (concussion) is "at least a week" away from returning from the disabled list. "Depending on how long he's going to be out, he'll probably have to go through rehab, maybe a game or two. Once he's healthy and ready to go, we'll bring him back…I think he'll be back maybe in a week or so," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said.
Fantasy Tip: For now, Darin Ruf can be shifted to left while Michael Young starts at first. Cody Asche, a top prospect who was recalled yesterday, should see plenty of starts at third base. Asche is expected to find playing time when Brown returns, too, although it won't be as frequent.

Philadelphia Phillies 3B Michael Young was not traded at the July 31 non-wavier trade deadline. Manager Charlie Manuel said he will use Young at first base and third base moving forward, with 3B Cody Asche possibly seeing time in the outfield.
Fantasy Tip: With Ryan Howard on the DL, Young could split time at first base with Darin Ruf, allowing Asche to start at third base. As mentioned, Asche can also play the outfield while Domonic Brown is on the DL. Basically, Manuel will try to find playing time for Asche, one of the team's top prospects, for the remainder of the season. Add him in all NL-only leagues, and depending on how much he plays, he could become relevant in deep mixed leagues.
