Giants | Chris Heston demoted

Thu, 21 Apr 2016 17:20:10 -0700

San Francisco Giants P Chris Heston has been optioned to Class AAA Sacramento. He began the season as a long reliever but will be used as a starting pitcher in the minors.

Fantasy Tip: The Giants want to stretch Heston out in case he is needed in the parent club's rotation and they also believe he will be able to use his side sessions to gain more confidence in his mechanics. The 28-year-old went 12-11 with a 3.95 ERA in 31 starts last year in a season that was highlighted by a no-hitter against the New York Mets. However, he struggled with his control this year in a bullpen role, allowing six runs on nine hits over five innings in four appearances, with twice as many walks as strikeouts. Heston is only worth monitoring in NL-only fantasy leagues at this point.

Giants | Matt Cain has arm surgery

Thu, 25 Feb 2016 09:38:10 -0800

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (arm) had surgery to remove a cyst in his upper arm Thursday, Feb. 25, but the Giants aren't ruling out his availability for the start of the regular season, according to general manager Bobby Evans. Cain is expected to resume throwing again in 10 days. Cain had the cyst removed over winter, too, but it was drained and then returned. SP Chris Heston could slide into the rotation if Cain isn't ready.

Fantasy Tip: Cain is fading quickly because of multiple injuries the last several seasons. He was a shell of his former self when he returned last year, and his velocity was at an all-time low. At this point he might be a long shot to stay healthy and productive. Keep him confined to NL-only leagues.

Giants | Tim Lincecum unlikely to re-sign

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:03:45 -0800

Free-agent SP Tim Lincecum (Giants) is unlikely to re-sign with the San Francisco Giants with their starting rotation already full. Lincecum could, however, be considered for a bullpen role as he recovers from hip surgery. SP Chris Heston, who made 31 starts for the Giants last year, also appears headed for a bullpen role.

Fantasy Tip: Injury concerns are Lincecum's biggest hurdle heading into the 2016 season, and he'll likely sign somewhere for plenty of incentives. There's no guarantee he'll be a starter again wherever he lands, and there's plenty of fantasy risk surrounding him in NL-only leagues.

Giants | Chris Heston could start in 2016

Tue, 06 Oct 2015 01:05:13 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston could be in the team's plans to start in 2016, but general manager Bobby Evans has said the Giants want to add two starting pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: Heston had a strong season, but he could be relegated to bullpen duty or back in the minors if the club powers up its rotation via free agency. Heston should stay in the majors, however, and if he does look to draft him in the later rounds in NL-only leagues.

Giants | Chris Heston struggles Sunday

Mon, 31 Aug 2015 01:06:21 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston struggled in his start Sunday, Aug. 30. Heston gave up five runs on nine hits in his 3 2-3 innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out one, matching his season low, in a 7-5 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fantasy Tip: It's safe to say Heston struggled because it was the Cardinals, but the reality is Heston has struggled in the last couple months. He is 2-3 with a 4.06 ERA post All-Star break, and Heston has a 5.79 ERA in August. It's best to leave Heston on your bench.

Giants | Matt Cain placed on DL

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 16:52:07 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Matt Cain (elbow) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, Aug. 28, because of nerve irritation in his elbow. The Giants also recalled SP Chris Heston from Class AAA Sacramento. He received a cortisone shot and underwent an MRI a few days ago which came back clean. Cain hopes to be able to pitch after 15 days.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor Cain's ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) recovery over the next few weeks to see if he has a chance to pitch again this season. Heston will be facing the St. Louis Cardinals this weekend and may not be a great option for fantasy owners.

Giants | Chris Heston might re-join team in L.A.

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 18:42:49 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston is not scheduled to make another minor-league start currently. He might return sometime soon, perhaps re-joining the team next week in Los Angeles once rosters expand after Sept. 1.

Fantasy Tip: Heston was sent down to give him a rest, as his innings have been piling up. The team wants to make sure to keep him healthy and not do any long-term damage. It's bad news for FantasyScore players, because he has been a tremendous option at times this season.

Giants | Chris Heston being sent down

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 14:40:59 -0700

San Francisco Giants SP Chris Heston will be sent to Class AAA Sacramento to receive a breather from the rotation. SP Mike Leake (hamstring) will return from the disabled list to take Heston's spot in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: It sounds as if Heston could come back up and rejoin the rotation eventually before this season is over, so he should be kept in deeper mixed and NL-only leagues if you have room. Leake ($5,500, 11.0% of cap) had been lights out before being traded to San Fran and being injured. Practice caution when considering using him on FantasyScore for his next start.
