Mariners | Nathan Karns to enter rotation

Fri, 06 Nov 2015 09:08:51 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns will enter the Mariners rotation immediately after being traded to them Thursday, Nov. 5. He went 7-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 26 starts for the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015 and led all American League rookies in innings pitched and strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Karns has serious potential with the move to pitcher-friendly Safeco Field, especially if he can make gains in his control. He struggled at times with walks and had 3.4 walks per nine innings and a 1.28 WHIP. Karns will be a nice target in the middle rounds to strengthen your fantasy rotation.

Mariners | SEA could make offer to Hisashi Iwakuma

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 18:44:32 -0800

Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said SP Hisashi Iwakuma is still expected to receive a qualifying offer despite the team's acquisition of SP Nathan Karns in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: If Iwakuma declines the team's qualifying offer, which is a one-year deal worth $15.8 million, he will become a free agent and the Mariners will receive compensation in next year's draft if he signs with another team. He went 9-5 with a 3.54 ERA in 20 starts this season.

Mariners | SEA completes six-player deal with TB

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 18:11:29 -0800

The Seattle Mariners have acquired SP Nathan Karns, minor league P C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league OF Boog Powell from the Tampa Bay Rays, in exchange for 1B Logan Morrison, SS/OF Brad Miller and RP Danny Farquhar.

Fantasy Tip: Karns went 7-5 with a 3.67 ERA in 27 games (26 starts) in 2015 and will likely crack Seattle's rotation next year even if the team brings back Hisashi Iwakuma, making him a late-round draft option for AL-only and deep mixed leagues. Riefenhauser is a left-handed reliever who went 1-0 with a 5.52 ERA in 17 appearances. Powell hit .295 with a .385 OBP and 18 steals while splitting his time between Class AA Montgomery and Class AAA Durham.

Rays | TB completes six-player deal with SEA

Thu, 05 Nov 2015 17:59:45 -0800

The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired 1B/OF Logan Morrison, SS/OF Brad Miller and RP Danny Farquhar from the Seattle Mariners, in exchange for SP Nathan Karns, minor league P C.J. Riefenhauser and minor league OF Boog Powell.

Fantasy Tip: Morrison appears likely to serve as the Rays' designated hitter in 2016, with James Loney expected to remain the team's regular first baseman. Miller could compete for the starting shortstop position, with Asdrubal Cabrera eligible to become a free agent. Farquhar has closing experience at the major league level but will probably be used in a setup role in 2016. Morrison and Miller could be of interest to owners in AL-only leagues during the middle and later rounds of fantasy drafts next spring.

Rays | Nathan Karns shut down

Tue, 22 Sep 2015 14:26:10 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Nathan Karns (forearm) is dealing with a mild forearm strain, according to manager Kevin Cash. Karns has been shut down for the last two weeks and will not pitch again this year.

Fantasy Tip: There was very little chance that the Rays were going to risk it with Karns ($4,700, 9.4% of cap) before, and now it's official. You can cut ties with him in all formats if you still had him stashed. Karns had his issues with consistency in his first full season in a starting rotation, but he flashed plenty of potential with 8.9 strikeouts per nine inning. He'll be a decent target for rotation depth in drafts next spring in the middle rounds.

Rays | Nathan Karns being skipped in rotation

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 13:12:49 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Nathan Karns will have his next start skipped with SP Matt Moore rejoining the starting rotation. The Rays are not expected to go to a six-man rotation, either.

Fantasy Tip: You'll want to check back for an official word out of Tampa, but Karns ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) could be in danger of losing his rotation spot. He has pitched well this season (3.69 ERA and 4.05 FIP), though, so stand pat for now. Moore was awful through his first six starts this season, but he has been sharper at Class AAA, so he is worth a flier in the majority of fantasy leagues.

Rays | Tampa willing to trade Nathan Karns

Thu, 30 Jul 2015 10:47:14 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Nathan Karns could be traded away by the Ray, as they are willing to listen on pitchers. RP Kevin Jepsen may be the most likely to leave town.

Fantasy Tip: Karns ($7,200, 14.4% of cap) has had a solid rookie season, going 6-5 with a 3.37 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 20 starts (115 innings) for the Rays this season. It's hard to imagine his fantasy value changing all that much if he's dealt, depending on where he lands. Jepsen is unlikely to fall into a closing role if he's traded away, so his fantasy value remains limited.

Rays | Nathan Karns helps own cause

Tue, 21 Jul 2015 20:28:46 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Nathan Karns allowed three hits and two walks over five scoreless innings Tuesday, July 21, in a win against the Philadelphia Phillies. He also swatted a solo home run, accounting for the only offense in the 1-0 victory. He has allowed two or fewer runs in 14 of his 19 appearances this season.

Fantasy Tip: Karns ($6,900; or 13.8% of cap) was able to bounce back after getting drummed for seven runs last time out in Kansas City. He still has a respectable 3.47 ERA in 19 starts this season and is a solid mid-level play in FantasyScore.

Rays | Nathan Karns loves the daylight

Wed, 08 Jul 2015 18:10:15 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Nathan Karns is scheduled to face the Kansas City Royals Thursday, July 9, in the afternoon series finale. In six day starts this season he is 1-1 with a sparkling 1.47 ERA, striking out 35 batters over 36 2/3 innings while the opposition is hitting just .198. He is also 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA in six road outings with a .180 opponent batting average.

Fantasy Tip: Karns ($6,500; or 13.0% of cap) is a sneaky play in FantasyScore, especially since he'll be facing Yordano Ventura who is coming off the DL.

Rays | Nathan Karns overshadowed Wednesday

Wed, 24 Jun 2015 16:03:39 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays SP Nathan Karns took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in a no-decision against the Toronto Blue Jays Wednesday, June 24, and his stellar performance was overshadowed by Blue Jays SP Marco Estrada's near perfect game. Karns allowed just three hits while walking three and striking out five in six-plus innings.

Fantasy Tip: Karns ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) now has a 3.28 ERA on the season and has solidified his spot in the starting rotation. He's had his ups and downs, though, and he struggles to find the strike zone often. At FantasyScore, he's a value play as your second starter in the right matchups.
