Mariners | Joaquin Benoit's struggles continue

Fri, 01 Jul 2016 17:45:17 -0700

Seattle Mariners RP Joaquin Benoit could lose his job as the club's primary setup man, after allowing eight earned runs in 8 2/3 innings over his last nine appearances, giving him a 5.30 ERA for the season. "Sometimes, his shoulder doesn't bounce back," manager Scott Servais said. "But it's probably more of a mechanical, release-point, timing issue. To see him miss the strike zone as much as he's missed it by, that's very un-normal. That's not him." Servais added that Benoit claimed his arm felt fine during his outing against the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, June 30, even though there have been several recent occasions where he was unavailable to pitch. RP Edwin Diaz is the most likely candidate to take over the role, although RPs Tom Wilhelmsen and Nathan Karns are also expected to be placed under consideration.

Fantasy Tip: Diaz has posted a 2.03 ERA in 12 appearances since joining the parent club last month, with 23 strikeouts over 13 1/3 innings. The 22-year-old rookie right-hander should be owned in AL-only fantasy leagues and in other formats which value the holds category. Wilhelmsen and Karns aren't worth rostering outside of deep AL-only leagues.

Mariners | Nathan Karns heading to 'pen

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 16:20:30 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns will head to the bullpen for the time being with SP Taijuan Walker (foot) going Thursday, June 30, and SP Wade LeBlanc starting Friday, July 1.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a permanent move for Karns, but it'll kill most of his limited fantasy value in the meantime. Walker has been up and down most of the year and is a high-risk, high-reward start against the Orioles Thursday. LeBlanc probably won't be long for a rotation spot and should be avoided against the powerful Baltimore lineup.

Mariners | Nathan Karns struggles in victory

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 22:38:44 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns allowed four earned runs, five hits and two walks with three strikeouts over five innings in a win Saturday, June 25, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He threw just 58 of his 97 pitches for strikes.

Fantasy Tip: The win was the first for Karns since May 30, a span of five starts. He has a 7.32 ERA over five starts in 23 1/3 innings in June, and he should be avoided in all but the deepest of AL-only fantasy leagues despite an impressive 6-2 record.

Mariners | Nathan Karns blasted by Rangers

Sun, 05 Jun 2016 05:44:37 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns allowed seven runs on eight hits and five walks through just four innings during the Mariners' 10-4 loss to the Texas Rangers Saturday, June 4.

Fantasy Tip: Through his seven starts prior to the outing Saturday, Karns had posted a 2.76 ERA with 39 strikeouts over 42 1/3 innings. View the rough outing against the Rangers as a sign Karns isn't a matchup proof hurler. He is worth a roster spot in the majority of seasonal leagues, and if you're selective with who you start him against, there is plenty of value.

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns allowed two earned runs, eight hits and a walk with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings in a win Monday, May 30, against the San Diego Padres. He has won five straight decisions.

Fantasy Tip: Karns lowered his ERA to 3.43 with the quality start, his fifth in the past seven outings. He has emerged as a must-start fantasy option this season.

Mariners | Nathan Karns improves to 4-1

Thu, 19 May 2016 13:47:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns upped his record to 4-1 after defeating the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, May 19. The right-hander pitched five innings, yielding just one run on four hits. He also picked up five strikeouts and walked none.

Fantasy Tip: Karns proved to be very steady for the Rays last year, and he's provided much of the same work thus far in his first season with the Mariners. Although his streak of four straight quality starts was snapped, Karns has now allowed one run or less in half of his outings, while going at least five innings in all. He can definitely be an asset in deep mixed leagues.

Mariners | Nathan Karns looks for another W

Fri, 06 May 2016 21:02:16 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns is scheduled to start Saturday, May 7, against the Houston Astros. He enters on a three-start winning streak, topping the Oakland Athletics last time out.

Fantasy Tip: Karns is 3-1 with a 3.81 ERA in six starts this season, and he has much better numbers than his counterpart Dallas Keuchel, the 2015 American League Cy Young Award winner. He has emerged as a must-start AL-only fantasy option and a value in DFS play.

Mariners | Nathan Karns up next for M's

Wed, 20 Apr 2016 22:21:22 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns will make the start Thursday, April 21, against the Cleveland Indians in a day game. He is 1-1 in two career outings against the Indians, both coming when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Fantasy Tip: Karns posted a 2.83 ERA in eight daytime starts in 2015, while posting a 4.06 ERA in 19 appearances (18 starts) under the lights. He could be a nice DFS value pitching in the sunshine.

Mariners | Nathan Karns wins final spot

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 09:36:19 -0700

Seattle Mariners SP James Paxton was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma Monday, March 28, meaning SP Nathan Karns has won the No. 5 starting spot.

Fantasy Tip: Karns had an impressive rookie season with Tampa Bay in 2015 and was more attractive in fantasy drafts than Paxton. Now it's official. Karns showed improved command in the second half despite an ERA spike, meaning his floor is high as a late-round pick in mixed leagues. Bid with more confidence now.

Mariners | Nathan Karns' curveball is key

Fri, 04 Mar 2016 11:48:19 -0800

Seattle Mariners SP Nathan Karns, who is competing for the final rotation spot with SP James Paxton this spring, used his curveball almost 30% of the time in 2015, and the pitch generated 31.23% swings and misses, according to Pitch F/X tracking from Brooks Baseball. Hitters batted only .179 with a .270 slugging percentage against Karns' curve.

Fantasy Tip: Because Karns isn't even a lock for a rotation spot, he's nothing more than a late-round dart throw in deep mixed leagues right now. But if he does win the job over Paxton, Karns has 200-strikeout potential over a full season. He'll need to work on his control, though, in order to deliver on his sleeper status in Seattle.
