Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said SP Taijuan Walker (shoulder) likely will begin the regular season on the disabled list because of his injured shoulder.
Fantasy Tip: Owners can move him down in their rankings because he likely will miss some starts during the regular season. Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer likely will compete for his spot in the starting rotation but likely will only be options in AL-only leagues.

Seattle Mariners SP Taijuan Walker (shoulder) has been shut down for at least a week after tests showed inflammation in the bursa sac of his right shoulder. Walker flew to Los Angeles Friday, Feb. 28, to have a second opinion on his sore right shoulder. "I think it's just normal throwing, what most pitchers experience at some point," manager Lloyd McClendon said. "The MRIs were clean and were good. There was no structural damage with this guy so everything is fine from that standpoint."
Fantasy Tip: There is a very realistic chance now that Walker isn't ready for the start of the regular season, and the M's will likely be cautious with their top pitching prospect. As a result, Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer will likely battle for the final rotation spot if Walker isn't ready. Ramirez has more upside and probably a leg up in the competiton for those looking for under-the-radar arms in AL leagues.

Seattle Mariners SP Brandon Maurer (back) was scratched from his live batting practice session Friday, Feb. 21, with tightness in his back. He thinks the problem is from sleeping wrong and isn't serious.

Seattle Mariners SP Hisashi Iwakuma (finger) will be sidelined four to six weeks because of a finger injury. He is expected to rejoin the starting rotation during the early part of the regular season.
Fantasy Tip: Iwakuma's fantasy value probably will not be affected much because he is expected to miss only a few starts. Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer could be options to be in the starting rotation while Iwakuma is out. Ramirez could be an option in deeper mixed leagues if he is in the starting rotation, while Maurer likely would only be an option in AL-only leagues.

Seattle Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon is expecting SP Taijuan Walker to be in the starting rotation when the season kicks off this year. Walker made three starts for the Mariners at the end of last season. He'd be competing against the likes of SPs Erasmo Ramirez, James Paxton, Brandon Maurer, Blake Beavan and Hector Noesi.

Seattle Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik would like to add another veteran starting pitcher. Behind SPs Felix Hernandez and Hisashi Iwakuma are plenty of questions surrounding the rotation. Manager Lloyd McClendon said he would be disappointed if SP Taijuan Walker didn't make the rotation out of spring training, but he's expected to compete with SPs James Paxton, Erasmo Ramirez and Brandon Maurer.

Seattle Mariners SP Felix Hernandez (back) has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday, Sept. 11, due to stiffness in his back. He'll be replaced by SP Brandon Maurer. Maurer was in the rotation earlier this year and is 4-7 with a 6.85 ERA. Hernandez felt more stiffness while throwing on flat ground over the weekend, but the injury isn't considered serious.
Fantasy Tip: Hernandez has plenty of innings on his arm over the last few seasons, so the M's will be extremely cautious here. Maurer was scheduled to enter the rotation anyway with the club going with a six-man rotation down the stretch. He's an option in deep AL-only leagues.
