Hoover said he's trying to show Fiammetta the ropes, but noted he isn't showing the rookie everything. Hoover said both players need to approach the situation as if they're fighting for a position. Then Williams had to carry the shoulder pads of veteran RBs DeShaun Foster and Brad Hoover to the locker room after the morning workout. Williams is expected to challenge Foster for the starting job. Williams was working mostly with the third- and fourth-teams on the first day and was surprised by the quickness at practice. "Amazing, the speed and tempo," said Williams, who has never attended an NFL game in person. "I was a bit nervous, because I didn't know what to expect." The vest holds 16 pounds of metal weights, and makes running plays much more difficult. "It's something I should have picked up a few years ago from (former tight end) Wesley Walls," Hoover said recently. "He used to wear it and I used to laugh at him. At the time it's not fun, but I think it pays off when you get to camp because it really helped me last year." Hoover is spending the team's time off before training camp working out at the Panthers' facilities. Hoover started wearing the vest last season. "The vest definitely helps. I think it helped me last year," Hoover said. "That's the closest thing to simulating pads for us while not actually having the pads. "It makes a huge difference. I do it with and without, and you can definitely feel the difference when you do it without." Panthers | J. He could earn some playing time at the position, if he shows he can handle the blocking assignments.
