Cleveland Browns CEO Joe Banner said the team dropped out of the running for Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly because of his indecision. "We removed ourselves from the process," Banner said. "We really liked Chip. He's intriguing, a very different thinker, and very smart. But you could see he was uncertain what he wanted to do ... The fact he committed to Tampa Bay last year, backed out, then seemed all year to be leaning toward going to the NFL, then being so uncertain with us, we just felt it was too big a gamble. If there was no ambivalence, we may have offered him the job."

The Cleveland Browns may decide to choose NFL Network analyst Michael Lombardi as their next general manager if president Joe Banner and owner Jimmy Haslam decide to move on from current GM Tom Heckert. Speculation is that if Lombardi becomes the GM, he could lure University of Alabama head coach Nick Saban back to the NFL under the Browns. Saban has said that the only way he would return to the NFL is under Lombardi. Oregon head coach Chip Kelly and New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could be candidates for the head coaching position in Cleveland if Saban doesn't come along.

There is a chance that Cleveland Browns general manager Tom Heckert could remain with the team next season, and the likelihood that the team brings in Michael Lombardi as the next GM has dwindled, according to NFL insiders. A move could hinge on whether Heckert will have control over the roster and the draft. Ownership has been impressed with Heckert but they have said CEO Joe Banner will be involved in player personnel.

Cleveland Browns CEO Joe Banner said there is a sense of urgency to the team's rebuilding plan; it will not be a five-year plan, according to Banner. "I'll be in a straitjacket if it takes that long," Banner said. "I don't think it should take very long before you're all sitting here, and the fans watching the team are sitting there going, 'You know what? These guys know what they're doing. We're on the right track. We can start to enjoy this. We're going to end up in a really good place. I think you'll start to feel that reasonably quickly."
