Angels | Daniel Nava back to the DL

Tue, 17 May 2016 15:52:36 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava (groin) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, May 17. OF Rafael Ortega was called up from the minors in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Nava just can't stay healthy and should be jettisoned at this point in deep mixed leagues if you owned him. Ortega, who hit .294 (15-for-51) with no home runs and four RBI earlier this year, is likely to start in left field against righties. He doesn't have a ton of offensive upside, so consider him as outfield depth in AL leagues.

Angels | Daniel Nava back this weekend?

Mon, 02 May 2016 16:21:05 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava (knee) will begin his rehab assignment with Class A Inland Empire Monday, May 2, and he could be ready to come off the disabled list this weekend. He's expected to resume his role as the starting left fielder against right-handed pitchers. OF Rafael Ortega or 1B Ji-Man Choi are the options to be sent down when Nava returns. Choi, a Rule 5 pick, can't be optioned or the Angels will lose him.

Fantasy Tip: The good news is that Nava is guaranteed to return to the strong side of a platoon when he's ready since the Angels don't have any better options. The bad news is that Nava doesn't help fantasy owners very much in any one particular category. He's strictly AL-only fodder for outfield depth.

Angels | Three Angels not in the lineup

Sun, 01 May 2016 11:13:13 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega, C Carlos Perez and 2B Johnny Giavotella are not in the starting lineup against Texas Rangers SP Cole Hamels Sunday, May 1. C Geovany Soto will start at catcher and is batting sixth in the lineup. OF Shane Robinson will start in left field and is batting eighth, while SS Cliff Pennington will start at second base and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Soto has at least one hit in six of his last seven starts and has six RBI during that span. Soto could be used in two-catcher leagues. Owners should avoid using Pennington and Robinson for the time being.

Angels | Johnny Giavotella hitting second

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 14:04:26 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 2B Johnny Giavotella is hitting second Saturday, April 30, with OF Rafael Ortega down to ninth against a left-hander.

Fantasy Tip: Giavotella has hit better of late with four hits, including a homer, in 10 at-bats the last week. He only hit .234 against lefties the previous three years, but he should see some pitches to hit ahead of Mike Trout. He's a decent option if you're looking for a basement flyer against Derek Holland. Ortega is hitting .368 the last seven days, but he hasn't faced a lefty this year. Hold off on him tonight.

Angels | Mike Trout serving as DH

Mon, 25 Apr 2016 14:51:16 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Mike Trout (foot) is serving as the designated hitter for the first time this year Monday, April 25, after fouling a ball off his foot over the weekend. OF Rafael Ortega is in center field and is batting second, while 1B Ji-Man Choi is in left field and is hitting ninth against Kansas City Royals SP Ian Kennedy. 1B C.J. Cron also takes a seat with 1B Albert Pujols at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Start Trout as you normally would in all fantasy formats. His foot isn't a problem after he started Sunday. Ortega and Choi haven't done much with the bats in Anaheim and are weak daily plays against Kennedy, who is out to a fine start with KC.

Angels | Rafael Ortega on the bench

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 11:34:18 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Rafael Ortega is not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley Sunday, April 24. OF Craig Gentry will start in left field and is batting ninth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Gentry has recorded only one hit in his last eight games and should be avoided by owners in all leagues.

Angels | Daniel Nava to DL

Sat, 16 Apr 2016 16:04:04 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, April 16, with left knee tendonitis. Manager Mike Scioscia said the knee gave Nava trouble in spring training and flared up again. OF Rafael Ortega was recalled from Class AAA Salt Lake.

Fantasy Tip: Ortega will likely platoon with Craig Gentry in left field, but neither of them possess a lot of fantasy luster right now.

Angels | Daniel Nava leaves after HBP

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 14:41:50 -0700

Los Angeles Angels OF Daniel Nava (head) was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Milwaukee Brewers SP Wily Peralta on Saturday, March 19. Nava eventually walked to first base under his own power before he was replaced by Rafael Ortega.

Fantasy Tip: Nava, who is 14-for-26 with seven RBI this spring, will almost certainly be checked for a concussion. Unless he can continue swinging a hot bat this spring and parlay that into more playing time, the 33-year-old switch-hitter appears to stuck in a committee with Todd Cunningham and Craig Gentry, reducing him to an occasional bargain-bin DFS option.

Angels | Daniel Nava could take over LF

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 16:20:31 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim OF Daniel Nava is set up to get the most plate appearances in left field, though he would still likely sit against most left-handed pitchers. OF Craig Gentry, a right-handed hitter, would "start basically every third day" if that's the case, but there will probably be an open competition in spring training for the job. This would also include OFs Ji-Man Choi, Rafael Ortega and Todd Cunningham.

Fantasy Tip: Clearly, Nava and Gentry would have the highest ceiling out of everyone in this competition, especially the former, who slashed a respectable .278/.364/.403 with the Boston Red Sox from 2012-14. Gentry, meanwhile, has pretty much always been a platoon player so that will probably remain the case in Anaheim. Keep an eye on Nava if he prevails with the job.
