Royals | Raul Adalberto Mondesi recalled

Tue, 26 Jul 2016 11:19:35 -0700

Kansas City Royals SS Raul Adalberto Mondesi was recalled from Class AAA Omaha Tuesday, July 26. In a corresponding move, OF/2B Whit Merrifield was optioned to the minors.

Fantasy Tip: Mondesi had played just 14 games with Omaha, but he posted a .304/.328/.536 slash line with seven of his 17 hits going for extra bases. He's unlikely to have a significant role, but there's plenty of upside in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, especially in the speed department. Merrifield was mired in an active 5-for-45 slump, so he's best replaced in most settings.

Royals | Whit Merrifield, Jarrod Dyson out Monday

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 15:10:10 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield and OF Jarrod Dyson are not in the starting lineup Monday, July 25. 2B Christian Colon is starting at second base and is hitting ninth, while OF Brett Eibner draws into right field and is batting eighth against Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Hector Santiago.

Fantasy Tip: Colon should be a fantasy afterthought with his .250 average, no homer runs and nine RBI in 100 at-bats. Eibner has slightly more appeal as a deep sleeper in DFS and is hitting .254 with three bombs and 10 RBI. Neither project to stuff the stat sheet hitting low in the order, though.

Royals | Whit Merrifield takes a seat

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 14:44:23 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield is out of the lineup Saturday, July 23, with 2B Christian Colon hitting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Colon is hitting .253 with nine RBI on the season, and he's not much of an option against Cole Hamels.

Royals | Whit Merrifield sitting vs. Cleveland

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 08:26:30 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B/OF Whit Merrifield is not in the starting lineup Wednesday, July 20. 2B Christian Colon is starting at the keystone and batting ninth against Cleveland Indians SP Carlos Carrasco Wednesday.

Fantasy Tip: Merrifield is having a nice run with Kansas City and owns a respectable .276 batting average with 30 runs through 49 games. He's skidding in July (.174/.240/.261 slash line), though, so he's losing his luster in deep mixed leagues and should be left to AL-only formats at this point. Against Carrasco, view Colon as a desperation fantasy option in all formats Wednesday.

Royals | Whit Merrifield hitting eighth

Mon, 18 Jul 2016 13:42:26 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield is hitting eighth and starting at second base against Cleveland Indians SP Corey Kluber Monday, July 18.

Fantasy Tip: Merrifield has held his own in his rookie season, but he's just 8-for-40 with 14 strikeouts in the month of July with no home runs and two RBI. Avoid him for now in daily formats, but he can still be a useful depth middle infield piece in deep mixed and AL-only leagues if he continues to play regularly.

Royals | Alcides Escobar leading off

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 14:39:14 -0700

Kansas City Royals SS Alcides Escobar is leading off Saturday, July 16, with 2B Whit Merrifield out. 2B Christian Colon is hitting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Escobar is hitting just .250 with 17 RBI and 10 steals in 260 at-bats from the leadoff spot. He has a good matchup against Mike Pelfrey, though, and he's worth a spot at the right price. Colon is hitting just .253 this year and isn't worth consideration.

Royals | Alex Gordon, Jarrod Dyson resting

Sat, 09 Jul 2016 10:26:45 -0700

Kansas City Royals OFs Alex Gordon and Jarrod Dyson are not in the starting lineup against Seattle Mariners SP Wade Miley Saturday, July 9. 2B/OF Whit Merrifield will bat leadoff and start in left field, INF Christian Colon will play second base and bat second, OF Paulo Orlando will bat sixth and play center field and OF Brett Eibner will hit seventh and start in right field.

Fantasy Tip: The Royals are only using one left-handed batter (1B Eric Hosmer) Saturday versus the southpaw Miley, which explains the absences of Gordon and Dyson from the lineup. Colon and Eibner should only be viewed as desperation sources of salary cap relief in daily fantasy games.

Royals | Whit Merrifield, Paulo Orlando sitting

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 13:34:49 -0700

Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield and OF Paulo Orlando are not in the starting lineup Tuesday, July 5. 2B Christian Colon is starting at the keystone and hitting second, while OF Brett Eibner is in right field and batting seventh against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey.

Fantasy Tip: The matchup isn't a bad one, but both Colon and Eibner are low on the totem pole of deep sleeper considerations in daily formats. Colon is hitting .284 in limited at-bats but has yet to hit a homer in three seasons. Eibner has a home run and seven RBI in 40 at-bats.

Royals | Alex Gordon leading off vs. St. Louis

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 13:41:49 -0700

Kansas City Royals OF Alex Gordon is leading off against St. Louis Cardinals SP Mike Leake Thursday, June 30. Royals 2B/OF Whit Merrifield and SS Alcides Escobar are batting second and seventh, respectively.

Fantasy Tip: The KC leadoff spot could be a daily guessing game, but Gordon and Merrifield should maintain starter status in the majority of leagues regardless of where they bat. Escobar, however, is a low-end fantasy option in deep mixed leagues because he isn't the 30-steals commodity he was once was, and hitting atop the lineup is a big boon to his stock. Manager Ned Yost usually settles with a lineup and sticks with it, though, so expect some stability sooner than latter in the one-hole.
