Phillies | Darin Ruf hitting third

Sun, 03 May 2015 07:38:54 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf is starting in left field Sunday, May 3, against the Miami Marlins. Ruf will also hit third in the order against Marlins SP Jarred Cosart.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) has two home runs in 44 plate appearances so far this season, but he is striking out 27.3% of the time. Ruf is hitting just .138 off righties to this point, and he should be avoided on FantasyScore.

Phillies | Ryan Howard may be in platoon

Thu, 16 Apr 2015 09:23:48 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard has sat out twice in nine games against left-handed pitchers. 1B Darin Ruf has been in against the lefties, but he is just 1-for-17 (.059) on the season.

Fantasy Tip: Howard ($2,600, 5.2% of your cap) is hitting just .148 with no homers in 27 at-bats. He's at a huge discount if he finds his power stroke. Howard has started slowly the last three years with a .266-8-30 line in 188 April at-bats. He's a matchup play on FantasyScore, and Ruf should be avoided right now.

Wed, 15 Apr 2015 12:43:08 -0700

Fantasy Tip: Ruf ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) has not had much success at the play so far this season with only one hit in 14 at-bats. Owners on FantasyScore should be able to find better options to use.

Phillies | Darin Ruf starting vs. Nationals

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 12:56:51 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B/OF Darin Ruf is starting at first base and batting fourth against the Washington Nationals Friday, April 10.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf's ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) minimal cap hit and handedness split are pluses Friday, however he should be viewed as anything more than a low-priced flier in daily contests. Philadelphia has struggled to generate offense so far this season (2.0 runs per game), and they're the largest underdogs on the schedule.

Phillies | Ryan Howard sitting out vs. Nats

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 12:46:16 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the starting lineup against the Washington Nationals Friday, April 10. 1B/OF Darin Ruf is starting at first base and batting fourth.

Fantasy Tip: While Ruf ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) has had some success against left-handed pitchers (.253/.353/.486 career slash line), it is a difficult matchup against southpaw Gio Gonzlaez, and the Phillies are the largest underdogs on the docket Friday. Aim higher than Ruf in FantasyScore contests, and make sure to avoid Howard.

Phillies | Darin Ruf, Jeff Francoeur starting

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 13:39:05 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OFs Darin Ruf and Jeff Francoeur are both in the starting lineup against the Boston Red Sox and SP Rick Porcello Wednesday, April 8. Ruf is starting in left field and hitting fifth, while Francoeur is in right field and hitting seventh. SS Odubel Herrera and Grady Sizemore will start on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf ($2,100, 4.2% of cap) and Francoeur ($2,000, 4.0% of cap) will see occasional playing time in 2015 based on matchups for the Phils. Neither is a strong daily play Wednesday night against Porcello, though, unless you're looking to go cheap for an outfield spot to save money for the rest of your lineup.

Phillies | Domonic Brown to open on DL

Tue, 31 Mar 2015 09:06:14 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Domonic Brown (Achilles') will start the season on the disabled list with an Achilles' injury that has kept him out the last two weeks. Brown will be the designated hitter in a minor league game Tuesday, March 31, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., and the Phillies are expecting Brown to miss more than just the opening week of the season. OFs Grady Sizemore, Jeff Francoeur, Jordan Danks and Darin Ruf are candidates to start in right field in place of Brown.

Fantasy Tip: Brown ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is a post-hype prospect that just hasn't put it together yet in Philly. He hit only .235 with 10 home runs and 63 RBI in 2014, meaning he probably wasn't on many fantasy owners' radars. Now that he's injury, he's not a candidate to be drafted in deep mixed leagues. Sizemore seems like the best bet to see the most playing time in Brown's absence, but Philadelphia could easily go with a platoon in right field, too.
