Wed, 22 May 2013 09:57:54 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies 2B Chase Utley (rib cage) will have an MRI following his absence from the club's game on Tuesday, May 21. He was scratched after he felt pain and a burning sensation in the area following a swing during batting practice. Utley won't play on Wednesday, May 22. It sounds as if the test will take place on Thursday, May 23. If he lands on the disabled list, then Freddy Galvis would fill in at second base, and the club would probably recall INF Cesar Hernandez or 1B/OF Darin Ruf. Fantasy Tip: This doesn't sound like a major injury, but a DL stint, one that could require more than the minimum stay, seems more than likely. Generally, teams don't like to mess around with these kinds of upper-body injuries because of how easily they're aggravated. It's a temporary setback to what has been a nice rebound for Utley, but it's something folks can deal with. Galvis would have value in deep mixed leagues in the interim.
Sat, 23 Mar 2013 11:18:47 -0700 The Philadelphia Phillies have optioned OF Darin Ruf to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He will play left field at least five days a week but will also see occasional playing time at first base as insurance for 1B Ryan Howard. "He's getting better in left field. He's improved," general manager Ruben Amaro said. "But he's got work to do to be an everyday left fielder in the big leagues. I think he's going to be an adequate left fielder at some point. But he's only played a month of pro ball at the position and needs experience. In our situation, where defense is important, it's tough for us to get him that experience here. He needs reps."
Sun, 10 Mar 2013 11:50:25 -0700 Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf (undisclosed) left the game against the Houston Astros Sunday, March 10, after being hit by a pitched ball.
Tue, 05 Mar 2013 14:10:22 -0800 Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf struck out three times in an exhibition game against the Dominican Republic Tuesday, March 5, and he also continued to struggle with his defense in the outfield. Ruf is currently 3-for-23 with one extra-base hit this spring. "That's probably got something to do with his hitting," manager Charlie Manuel said. "He's trying too hard right now and things are not going good for him. He'll be all right. He is going to get some more hits. He's fine. He's not going to go his whole life with all collars." OFs John Mayberry Jr. and Laynce Nix are an alternative to Ruf in left field to start the season.
Thu, 28 Feb 2013 13:56:54 -0800 Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf made his second error in left field in four spring games Thursday, Feb. 28. "Darin is going to make some mistakes," manager Charlie Manuel said, and not for the first time. "Hopefully he can just keep working and see how much he can improve before the end of the spring." Ruf was 0-for-10 before an RBI single Thursday.
Wed, 27 Feb 2013 13:37:01 -0800 Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said OF Darin Ruf (arm) is dealing with a sore arm due to his position switch. Ruf expects to be ready to play Thursday, Feb. 28. He is 0-for-9 this spring.
Fri, 22 Feb 2013 13:04:01 -0800 Philadelphia Phillies OFs Domonic Brown and Darin Ruf both played well in an intrasquad game Friday, Feb. 22. Ruf doubled in each of his first two at-bats and Brown added a single and double in two times up to bat. Brown and Ruf will see plenty of playing time this spring with OF Delmon Young (ankle) sidelined.
Tue, 19 Feb 2013 21:35:13 -0800 Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf will see time at both outfield and first base during the spring, according to manager Charlie Manuel.
Tue, 22 Jan 2013 12:07:15 -0800 Philadelphia Phillies OF Delmon Young will join an inexperienced outfield picture in 2013 that includes OFs Domonic Brown, Darin Ruf, John Mayberry Jr. and Laynce Nix. Brown figures to win a job outright, but the other spots are likely up for grabs.
Wed, 09 Jan 2013 00:16:21 -0800 The Philadelphia Phillies will likely enter spring training with an outfield consisting of Ben Revere, Domonic Brown, John Mayberry Jr., Darin Ruf, and Laynce Nix. "We're likely going with what we've got," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. Amaro may change his mind for a low-risk veteran outfielder to join the system, as the club still has about $7 million of its projected $178 million payroll to spend. |
