Phillies | No Darin Ruf

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 11:49:15 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B/OF Darin Ruf is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Aug. 19, against the Seattle Mariners.

Fantasy Tip: Remove Ruf from your lineups. He should be owned in NL-only formats and cavernous mixed leagues. He is making the most of his opportunities.

Phillies | Marlon Byrd starting, Ryan Howard sitting

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 12:20:30 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Marlon Byrd is in the starting lineup Thursday, July 31, against the Washington Nationals. 1B Darin Ruf is starting at first base against the Nationals left-handed SP Gio Gonzalez, instead of 1B Ryan Howard.

Fantasy Tip: With Byrd in the lineup, it is unlikely he is traded before the non-waiver deadline today. Ryne Sandberg appears to be sticking to his platoon at first base. Howard's dwindling fantasy stock will continue to fade, if he continues to sit against left-handed pitchers. Ruf is worth owning in NL-only leagues, as long as he is getting semi-regular at-bats.

Phillies | Ryan Howard benched again

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 20:36:35 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was on the bench for a third consecutive day Friday, July 25, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. His replacement, 1B/OF Darin Ruf, went 1-for-2 with a double, walk, run scored and RBI.

Fantasy Tip: Philly was facing another left-handed starter, and Howard is hitting just .209 (19-for-91) with 40 strikeouts and a .275 on-base percentage vs. LHP. If he sits Saturday against Diamondbacks SP Josh Collmenter, a righty, then fantasy owners should really be concerned.

Phillies | No Ryan Howard again

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 11:22:39 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the lineup Friday, July 25, against Arizona Diamondbacks SP Wade Miley, a left-hander. 1B Darin Ruf is playing first base and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: So continues the platoon saga that'll give Ruf more deep-mixed value and makes Howard expendable in many formats.

Phillies | Ryan Howard sitting, platoon likely

Thu, 24 Jul 2014 09:11:48 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the lineup Thursday, July 24, against a right-handed pitcher. Manager Ryne Sandberg wants to get 1B Darin Ruf's feet wet after his recent call-up, but he also said that he's planning on using a platoon more frequently moving forward.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf should be added in NL-only and some deep mixed games. Howard is looking more droppable in mixed leagues by the day.

Phillies | Ryan Howard's future in question

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 19:12:07 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard was held out of the lineup Wednesday, July 23, against the San Francisco Giants. Manager Ryne Sandberg suggested the first base spot "will be a day-to-day thing," and that Howard's huge contract will not dictate playing time. "It's about wins and losses out here," Sandberg said. "When the game starts, it's about winning the game and being productive and chipping in and doing the part and doing something to help win a game. If that means playing somebody else there and there's production right away - that's trying to win a baseball game." OF Darin Ruf made the start at first base with a left-handed pitcher on the hill for San Francisco. He played four of his past five games at Triple-A at first base, so the team appears to have been planning an unofficial platoon type situation.

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners cannot be pleased with the news, although it's hardly a surprise given Howard's low batting average. Fantasy owners knew what they were getting into before drafting Howard back in the spring. With the team out of contention, using some younger players in the lineup down the stretch wouldn't be surprising, so if you're a Howard owner, especially in daily leagues, picking up Ruf, and perhaps stashing Maikel Franco, is essential.

Phillies | Ryan Howard sitting

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 11:39:47 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies 1B Ryan Howard is not in the lineup Wednesday, July 23. 1B/OF Darin Ruf if hitting seventh and playing first base.

Fantasy Tip: The Phils are facing San Francisco Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner, so the newly recalled Ruf is getting platoon duty. He's worth a grab in NL-only and some deep mixed games.

Phillies | John Mayberry Jr. to DL

Tue, 22 Jul 2014 13:53:33 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF John Mayberry Jr. (wrist) was placed on the disabled list Tuesday, July 22, with left wrist inflammation. In a corresponding move, 1B/OF Darin Ruf was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Fantasy Tip: Ruf is worth a flier in NL-only formats. He hit 14 home runs in 73 games last season, and he has a nice power pedigree at the minor league level.

Sat, 05 Jul 2014 17:21:31 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies OF Darin Ruf (wrist) will likely make his first rehab start for Triple-A Lehigh Valley Sunday, July 6, according to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.

Fantasy Tip: Once he is fully recovered, Ruf could earn a shot at replacing the struggling Domonic Brown.
