Brewers | Jimmy Nelson drops ninth decision

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 21:27:31 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson allowed eight runs -- six earned -- on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday, July 27. He walked two and struck out seven.

Fantasy Tip: In fairness, Milwaukee's defense was particularly abysmal on Wednesday, even if it only ended up with two of the runs being unearned. Still, this was the continuation of a major swoon for Nelson, who is 1-6 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.74 WHIP over his last 10 starts. He's exclusively an NL-only/deep-mixed candidate at this time.

Reds | Brandon Phillips absent from lineup

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 13:10:43 -0700

Cincinnati Reds 2B Brandon Phillips (calf) is not in the lineup Saturday, July 16, against Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson. 2B Jose Peraza will fill in for Phillips at second base and hit seventh, while C Ramon Cabrera will replace C Tucker Barnhart behind the plate and bat eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Philips has seen his production drop off significantly this season as a result of dealing with foot, ankle and hand injuries. He is batting .260, hasn't homered since May 7 and registered only two stolen bases since the end of April, making him waiver-wire fodder in a number of leagues. Peraza's only desirable fantasy attribute at the moment is his speed and Cabrera doesn't provide much of anything as Barnhart's backup, making both players difficult to recommend in any format.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson pitches well in ND

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 21:41:25 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson allowed two runs on six hits in six innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday, July 8. He did not factor in the decision.

Fantasy Tip: Nelson looked poised to get his first win since May 29, but Will Smith gave up the lead in the eighth to stretch Nelson's winless streak to seven starts. On the bright side, he has been pitching better after a rough start to June, posting a 2.45 ERA over his last four outings (22 innings). His suddenly inability to strike anyone out, however, limits Nelson's appeal to deep mixed and NL-only leagues.

Cardinals | Jhonny Peralta out Friday

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 13:37:36 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Jhonny Peralta (thumb) is not in the lineup Friday, July 8, against the Milwaukee Brewers. 3B Greg Garcia will start again and lead off against Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson.

Fantasy Tip: Leave Peralta off your active roster until he is healthy enough to play without pain. The team isn't worried long-term, and Peralta will get a natural break come All-Star time. Garcia (.344-2-10) may be worth a low-priced pickup in daily leagues with him in the leadoff spot, and he could be stashed in deeper formats with Matt Carpenter out.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson has short night

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 22:48:34 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson needed 105 pitches to get through five innings against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, June 21. He allowed one run on six hits, walked one and struck out two.

Fantasy Tip: After working fewer than six innings just twice in his first 11 starts, Nelson has failed to pitch more than 5 1/3 frames in any of his four June outings -- he's also 0-3 with just eight strikeouts for the month. Nelson is really laboring right now despite some very advantageous match-ups; three of his last four opponents rank in the bottom six in runs scored this year. He shouldn't be cut loose just yet, but those with other options might want to keep him reserved for the time being.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson has off outing

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 17:07:40 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson fell to 5-6 on the year after losing his start Wednesday, June 15, versus the San Francisco Giants. The right-hander lasted a season-low 3 2/3 innings, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on eight hits and three walks. He also picked up only two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Prior to this month, a case could be made that Nelson was actually one of the most underrated starting pitchers in all of baseball. In fact, he allowed two earned runs or less in nine of his first 11 starts. Since the calendar flipped to June, though, the 26-year-old has suddenly given up six runs in two of three assignments, seeing his ERA jump from 2.88 to 3.92 in the process. It's a little concerning, but considering how steady he was through the first two months, his owners just need to keep trotting him out there in hopes he turns it back around.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson loses to Phils

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 19:36:50 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson (5-4) allowed six runs on seven hits over four innings in a loss to the Philadelphia Phillies Friday, June 3, with three walks and one strikeout.

Fantasy Tip: Entering play Friday, Nelson had allowed just five runs over his previous four starts but he experienced his shortest outing of 2016 against the Phils, who have had their share of offensive problems. He will look to bounce back in his next start versus the New York Mets Thursday, June 9.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson settles down for win

Sun, 29 May 2016 15:25:53 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson struggled early but settled down to allow two runs and six hits and two walks in 7 1/3 innings Sunday, May 29. Milwaukee beat the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4, and Nelson's record improved to 5-3.

Fantasy Tip: Nelson had eight walks and 18 strikeouts in his past three starts prior to this one, but this is the first win for Nelson since May 2. You may want to watch Nelson's matchups, as the team he is on (Milwaukee) is struggling and holds down Nelson's fantasy value. He may be worth a DFS start if the matchup warrants.

Braves | A.J. Pierzynski out of lineup Tuesday

Tue, 24 May 2016 13:25:38 -0700

Atlanta Braves C A.J. Pierzynski is not starting Tuesday, May 24, against the Milwaukee Brewers. C Tyler Flowers is batting fifth against Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson.

Fantasy Tip: Flowers has seen the majority of the action this week, but this still looks like a true platoon. In his past 10 at-bats Flowers has two doubles and a home run, so he has demonstrated some slugging tendencies. The platoon situation makes Flowers less desirable in weekly or annual leagues, but DFS players should take advantage.

Brewers | Jimmy Nelson solid

Wed, 18 May 2016 23:19:24 -0700

Milwaukee Brewers SP Jimmy Nelson allowed five hits and four walks over 7 1/3 shutout innings Wednesday, May 18, in a no-decision against the Chicago Cubs.

Fantasy Tip: Nelson has quietly been decent this year with a 4-3 record, a 3.07 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and a 7.06 K/9. He'll be a midrange DFS option when his turn comes around.
