Brian Allee-Walsh, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RBs Ki-Jana Carter and Lamar Smith are in a tight battle for the team's No. 3 running back spot, especially after both players' performance in the Friday, Aug. 13, preseason game against the New York Jets. "It's very close as evidenced in the way they played the other night against the Jets," Saints offensive coordinator Mike McCarthy said. "We're trying to split Lamar and Ki-Jana right down the middle in reps. We're trying to give them an equal opportunity to win the job."

Jeff Duncan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RB Lamar Smith, who signed a one-year contract Wednesday, Nov. 26, is expected to be de-activated for the Sunday, Nov. 30, game against the Washington Redskins. Smith will serve as RB Deuce McAllister's primary backup for the rest of the season.
