Following the departure of RP Francisco Rodriguez (Orioles), Milwaukee Brewers RP Ron Roenicke indicated Wednesday, July 24, that RPs Jim Henderson and John Axford might close games going forward. Both have closing experience from earlier this season. RP Mike Gonzalez could also be used against left-handed hitters as well. In the game against the San Diego Padres Wednesday, Henderson got the ball in the ninth for his 11th save, while Axford worked a perfect eighth inning.

The Baltimore Orioles acquired RP Francisco Rodriguez from the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday, July 23, in exchange for INF Nick Delmonico. Also, the Orioles moved OF Nolan Reimold (neck) to the 60-day disabled list in a corresponding move.
Fantasy Tip: Now that K-Rod is out of the picture in Milwaukee, we expect Jim Henderson to jump back into the closer's role, but there's also a chance that John Axford works his way back into consideration eventually. Own both in deep mixed leagues if you're speculating for saves. In Baltimore, K-Rod will be put into setup duties for Jim Johnson, so he'll lose his value as a closer.
Delmonico, 21, has the skills to hit for a decent average and nice pop at the major league level, but he may be several years away from a starting role in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee Brewers have had ongoing discussions with the Arizona Diamondbacks about SP Yovani Gallardo, and RPs John Axford, Jim Henderson and Francisco Rodriguez, according to major league sources. The Diamondbacks have a deep farm system, and it is conceivable they could acquire the ace of the Brewers and one of the relievers. The team needs help with several starters injured, and RP Heath Bell subbing for the shaky RP J.J. Putz at closer.

Milwaukee Brewers RP Francisco Rodriguez is the club's closer, according to manager Ron Roenicke. The manager was asked who that is, because RP Jim Henderson appeared in the eighth inning of the team's game on Saturday, June 29. "Frankie (Rodriguez) was last night," Roenicke said. "He probably would have been the last two nights. It changes with matchups. It changes with matchups, but generically, as of now, Frankie is closing." The manager was asked what impact the trade deadline has on his choice, and he said none, but added, "Not until I meet with (GM Doug Melvin) and Doug tells me something different."
Fantasy Tip: The Brew Crew is unlikely to contend for a playoff spot, so this can easily look like posturing, regardless. K-Rod has pitched quite well since he signed a minor league deal and was promoted to the parent club, however, so there's plenty of merit to the move. He seems to have embraced his less imposing repertoire be virtually eliminating his two-seam fastball, and his improved control has helped him to limit or prevent damage.

Milwaukee Brewers RP Jim Henderson is back in the closer's role, and RP Francisco Rodriguez is available to fill in in the ninth inning anytime Henderson needs a breather. Henderson pitched the eighth inning Wednesday, June 19, because it was a "need to pitch" day for Henderson, because he hadn't pitched in the previous seven days. The Brewers went ahead and Rodriguez came in for the save in the ninth. "I'm hoping we get on some winning streaks and we can have a lot in a row," manager Ron Roenicke said. "When you do that, Henderson is going to pitch a lot and is going to need a day. When he needs a day, Frankie is there. But if we just go in a normal game and everybody is rested ... we'll set it up (with Henderson as the closer)."
Fantasy Tip: If Henderson is available in your league, pick him up. K-Rod can probably be dropped in most mixed formats for now.

Confirming a previous report, the Milwaukee Brewers have activated RP Jim Henderson (hamstring) from the 15-day disabled list. In a corresponding move, P Tyler Thornburg has been optioned to Triple-A Nashville.
Fantasy Tip: Henderson will not return immediately to the closer's role, so Francisco Rodriguez remains Milwaukee's go-to guy at the end of the game. Manager Ron Roenicke wants to be cautious with Henderson and said it makes sense to use him "somewhere other than the ninth inning."
