White Sox | Erik Johnson to start Thursday

Tue, 03 May 2016 13:24:10 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson will make the start against the Boston Red Sox Thursday, May 5.

Fantasy Tip: A former top pitching prospect, Johnson has shaky skills as a starter and had a fortunate 3.34 ERA in six starts for the Pale Hose last season. He also walked 4.4 hitters per nine and can be hurt by his spotty control. This could just be a spot start, too, and the matchup is not forgiving. Pass on Johnson now unless you're desperate in AL-only leagues for an arm.

White Sox | Erik Johnson optioned to Charlotte

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 23:09:29 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson was optioned to Class AAA Charlotte Monday, March 21, along with P Tyler Danish and INF Steve Lombardozzi.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson was in the mix for a rotation job but he completely laid an egg in his two spring outings. He might be back at some point to start, but he'll need to show a lot more consistency before he can be trusted in fantasy again.

White Sox | Erik Johnson on the outs?

Mon, 07 Mar 2016 22:54:23 -0800

Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson allowed four runs over three innings in his Cactus League spring debut Monday, March 7, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He was in line to be the fifth starter until the club added SP Mat Latos, now he is considered a long shot.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson's stat line looks worse than it is, as OF Jerry Sands misplayed a ball which led to an RBI double. Johnson can be avoided in most fantasy formats for now, but he could get a chance down the road if injuries occur.

White Sox | ChiSox to have battle for No. 5 spot

Sat, 30 Jan 2016 11:36:18 -0800

Chicago White Sox SPs Jacob Turner and Erik Johnson are expected to compete for the No. 5 spot in the starting rotation during spring training, assuming no other offseason moves are made.

Fantasy Tip: Whoever wins the battle between Turner and Johnson is projected to be the sole right-handed starter in Chicago's rotation, along with SPs Chris Sale, Carlos Rodon, Jose Quintana and John Danks. Both righties are worth monitoring as potential late-round fliers for AL-only fantasy leagues.

White Sox | Erik Johnson could win No. 5 spot

Wed, 25 Nov 2015 17:27:28 -0800

Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson appears to have a leg up over SPs Carson Fulmer and Frankie Montas for the No. 5 spot in the team's starting rotation, according to general manager Rick Hahn. "If Opening Day were today, then I think Johnson is penciled in to that spot in the rotation right now," Hahn said. "In all probability, once we get closer to spring, there will be some competition for him to earn that spot."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson went 3-1 with a 3.34 ERA over six starts in the majors last season, with 30 strikeouts over 35 innings. He could potentially be the only right-handed starter in a rotation that includes Chris Sale, Jose Quintana, Carlos Rodon and John Danks. Johnson is worth monitoring during spring training in AL-only leagues.

White Sox | Erik Johnson to get another start

Mon, 07 Sep 2015 22:22:54 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson will get another chance to start, as manager Robin Ventura said Monday, Sept. 7, the team will go to a six-man rotation. "I think the way he threw, he gets another shot at going out there," Ventura said. "It will probably be a semi-six man rotation in a way. You can get everybody an extra day."

Fantasy Tip: Johnson is worth a look in deeper AL-only fantasy leagues, and he might be a cheap option in FantasyScore down the stretch.

White Sox | Erik Johnson starting Sunday

Thu, 03 Sep 2015 16:29:55 -0700

Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson will start against the Kansas City Royals Sunday, Sept. 6, according to manager Robin Ventura, with SP Chris Sale being pushed back a day to start at home against the Cleveland Indians Monday, Sept. 7. Johnson went 11-8 with a 2.37 ERA with Class AAA Charlotte this year.

Fantasy Tip: This could only be a spot start for Johnson, so he's unlikely to have any kind of fantasy value in the season's final month. Using him on FantasyScore against the first-place Royals also wouldn't be recommended.

White Sox | Erik Johnson looking to build on last year

Tue, 04 Mar 2014 19:21:20 -0800

Chicago White Sox SP Erik Johnson is pegged to fill out the back end of the rotation this season after working his way up from Double-A Birmingham to the majors at the end of last season. He made his spring debut Tuesday, March 4, allowing one run and three hits with a walk over three innings in Cactus League action against the Cleveland Indians. "Today was just get my work in, use all my pitches, get out of there healthy and feel good about it," Johnson said.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson was dominant in the minors last season, earning a September call-up. He was so impressive with the big club that they penciled him into the rotation. He is worth using in all AL-only fantasy leagues for his strikeout potential, but mixed leaguers will want to take a wait-and-see attitude. Since he'll be in the back-end of the rotation, and there are plenty of off days early in the season, it is possible he doesn't start as frequently as fantasy owners might like.

White Sox | Chris Beck working way up

Tue, 04 Mar 2014 19:20:48 -0800

Chicago White Sox P Chris Beck is in camp as a non-roster invitee, and he is expected to begin the season with Double-A Birmingham. Like SP Erik Johnson last season, Beck could follow a similar path, starting with the Barons, and finishing up in Chicago in September. He has a fastball in the low- to mid-90's, and he feels his secondary stuff is improving. "The breaking stuff has kind of always been behind, so that's really been the key," Beck said. "Last year at Double-A, I had some success with the curveball, and now just since camp started, I feel like I've added some depth to my slider."
