Indians | Cody Allen records four-out save

Sat, 22 Aug 2015 05:29:49 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen recorded a scoreless four-out save during Cleveland's 7-3 win over the New York Yankees Friday, Aug. 21.

Fantasy Tip: Allen had allowed runs in each of his past two appearances, and he has struggled off and on all season. It is reflected in his 3.93 ERA, and he has just 25 saves on the season. He is sporting a 6.00 ERA in August and has allowed a run in four of nine appearances. It is unlikely he loses his job at this point, but it wouldn't be a shock, either.

Indians | Cody Allen battling control issues

Thu, 06 Aug 2015 13:03:40 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen said he lost his fastball command during his blown save and loss to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Wednesday, Aug. 5. "I've kind of hurt myself," said Allen. "I'm getting behind in the count on guys and then just kind of get away from pitching."

Fantasy Tip: Allen has coverted 22-of-25 saves this season, so he is far from on the verge of losing his job. However, he has allowed seven earned runs through 5 2/3 innings over his last eight appearances, so he is becoming more risky for Cleveland and fantasy owners to rely on. Bryan Shaw would likely take over closing duties, if Allen continues to struggle. Shaw is a desperation add for saves chasers.

Indians | Cody Allen blows save, suffers loss

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 18:12:50 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen (1-4) blew his fourth save of the season and was tagged with the loss Wednesday, Aug. 5, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. He allowed three runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning, with two walks and one strikeout.

Fantasy Tip: Allen has struggled mightily of late, allowing seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings over his last eight appearances. He has surrendered at least one run in five games over that stretch. If the Indians decide to make a move at closer, Bryan Shaw could be next in line to receive save opportunities.

Indians | Cody Allen struggling after break

Wed, 05 Aug 2015 15:47:26 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen has given up seven earned runs and 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings pitched with two blown saves and two losses since the All-Star break after blowing the save against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Wednesday, Aug. 5. Before the break he had a 1.35 ERA and was 16-for-16 in save chances in 33 outings.

Fantasy Tip: There's been no mention of the Tribe going away from Allen in the ninth inning because of his recent struggles. But if the Indians do choose to do so, Bryan Shaw is likely next in line for Terry Francona. If you're scrounging for saves, Shaw is a speculative add in deeper leagues.

Indians | Cody Allen nursing back stiffness

Tue, 07 Jul 2015 21:04:11 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen (back) was dealing with a stiff back and was unavailable Tuesday, July 7.

Fantasy Tip: With a save opportunity coming up Tuesday, it was Bryan Shaw taking the ball and nailing down his second save of the season. Keep an eye on Allen's condition and if you're desperate for saves or own Allen, a speculative pickup of Shaw may be in order.

Indians | Cody Allen lights out in ninth

Sun, 14 Jun 2015 06:09:47 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen pitched the final 1 1/3 innings Saturday, June 13, against the Detroit Tigers, to nail down his 14th save of the season. Allen has just one blown save in 15 opportunities.

Fantasy Tip: Allen is an elite option in season-long leagues. With the Indians calling up star defensive SS Francisco Lindor, Allen's value could rise even higher with more opportunities.

Indians | Cody Allen nails down 12th save

Tue, 02 Jun 2015 20:55:38 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen recorded his 12th save during Cleveland's 2-1 win over the Kansas City Royals Tuesday, June 2.

Fantasy Tip: It was Allen's fifth consecutive appearance without allowing a run, and after a rough start, he has now allowed just four earned runs over his last 17 games. Dating back to Saturday, April 29, Allen has eight saves. He is slowing working his ERA (5.01) down, too. And at this point, he appears to have a pretty solid grasp on the closing role.

Indians | Cody Allen spinning more curveballs

Wed, 06 May 2015 13:15:56 -0700

Cleveland Indians RP Cody Allen is throwing a higher percentage of curveballs this season, and he has increased his curveball percentage annually over the past three seasons. He utilized the curveball 28.3% in 2013, 3.7% last season, and so far this season, Allen is throwing it 41.3% of the time.

Fantasy Tip: Allen has leaned on his curveball to keep hitters off balance, as he primarily used the pitch as a putout option earlier in his career. Currently, the closer is struggling on the mound with a 10.00 ERA and a 2.44 WHIP with two losses, a blown save and only four converted saves. Manager Terry Francona has stood behind Allen, but Allen is clearly struggling, and hurting fantasy owners. Bryan Shaw deserves attention from the save vultures out there, as he may end up seizing the job from Allen.
