Blue Jays | Ryan Goins placed on disabled list

Sat, 02 Jul 2016 11:34:46 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays have placed INF Ryan Goins (forearm) on the 15-day disabled list due to right forearm tightness. He sustained the injury while making an emergency relief appearance during the 18th inning of the game versus the Cleveland Indians Friday, July 1, but isn't expected to miss more than the minimum number of days. In corresponding moves, the club optioned RP Bo Schultz to Class AAA Buffalo, while recalling RPs Drew Hutchison and Aaron Loup from Buffalo.

Fantasy Tip: Goins was batting just .176 with three home runs and 12 RBI through 159 at-bats and isn't worth stashing in most formats. Hutchison will be used by the parent club as a long reliever and Loup as a left-handed specialist, so neither pitcher possesses much fantasy value.

Blue Jays | Troy Tulowitzki placed on DL

Sat, 28 May 2016 09:03:57 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays SS Troy Tulowitzki (quadriceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, May 28, because of a right quadriceps strain. The team also activated RP Aaron Loup (from) from the 15-day disabled list.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see how long Tulowtizki may be out of the lineup. Darwin Barney is the most likely candidate to start at shortstop while Tulowitzki is sidelined. He saw solid playing time at second base when Devon Travis was out with an injury and is hitting .301 with two home runs and six RBI. Barney should be starting in all AL-only leagues and can be a short-term option in some deeper mixed leagues.

Blue Jays | Miguel Castro in low-leverage situations

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 15:09:36 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Miguel Castro, who was removed from the closer role, will be used in low-leverage situations for the time being in order to regain his footing. RPs Aaron Loup and Roberto Osuna will take over as the primary options for the seventh and eighth innings in front of RP Brett Cecil. "He's not polished off yet, he's so inexperienced, and to be fair to the kid, early on he was big for us," manager John Gibbons argued. "So back him off, build him up and get him back in there. Nobody goes through this game without getting hit around a little bit. To think a 20-year-old kid won't, that just doesn't happen."

Fantasy Tip: Hopefully you held onto Cecil if you owned him after he was demoted from the ninth-inning role early in the season. Aside from AL-only leagues, Castro is a candidate to let go to the waiver wire while he regains his footing and confidence.

Blue Jays | Casey Janssen activated from disabled list

Sun, 11 May 2014 10:02:03 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays have activated RP Casey Janssen (back) from the 15-day disabled list. In a corresponding move, 2B Chris Getz has been designated for assignment.

Fantasy Tip: Janssen will step into the closer's role right away, so activate him immediately in all leagues. RPs Aaron Loup and Steve Delabar will serve as set-up men, with RP Sergio Santos working in low-pressure situations for the foreseeable future.

Blue Jays | Casey Janssen could have one more rehab outing

Thu, 08 May 2014 13:36:58 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Casey Janssen (back) will rest for the next two days and then pitch again for Double-A New Hampshire Saturday, May 10. Janssen could be back with the team Sunday, May 11, or Monday, May 12.

Fantasy Tip: Aaron Loup and Brett Cecil have both earned saves since Sergio Santos was demoted from the ninth-inning role, but neither reliever is expected to have much of a shelf life with Janssen returning soon.

Blue Jays | Brett Cecil records save

Tue, 06 May 2014 05:38:51 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Brett Cecil pitched a scoreless inning for his second save of the season Monday, May 5.

Fantasy Tip: He was scheduled to face the bottom of the order, so this wasn't a matchup play against a left-handed hitter like Ryan Howard. Aaron Loup and Steve Delabar worked the seventh and eighth, which makes Cecil the one to target on waivers.

Blue Jays | Sergio Santos out as closer

Sat, 03 May 2014 13:24:51 -0700

Toronto Blue Jays RP Sergio Santos has been removed from the closer role. RP Aaron Loup will serve as the closer Saturday, May 3.

Fantasy Tip: They are likely to go to a committee until Casey Janssen (back) returns and is ready to resume his role as closer. Brett Cecil and Steve Delabar could also figure into save chances. Cecil could have been the guy Saturday, but he threw two innings the previous day. He's a lefty, though, and may be a matchup pick in the committee. Cecil, Loup and Delabar are worth a pickup if you're in need of saves, but don't burn too many FAAB dollars on them as it's likely a short-term solution. Janssen is nearing a rehab assignment and could be installed as closer in a couple of weeks.
