Coach George Seifert said it wasn't accurate to call Lewis the fourth-stringer. Seifert added he had no plans to release Lewis on Tuesday. Weinke will play the first half of Friday's pre-season game and Craig and Lytle are likely to play a quarter each.

Coach George Seifert said Weinke would go into training camp fourth on the list. "We want to put the best quarterback on the field, but right now we have our pecking order," Seifert said. Panthers | What To Do At QB?

Wed, 14 Mar 2001 08:52:04 -0800

Darin Gantt reports for the Rock Hill Herald it appears Carolina Panthers coach George Seifert reportedly informed QB Jeff Lewis he'd enter training camp as the team's starting QB. Seifert reportedly also told Dameyune Craig he'll be the No. 2 QB, and that there were no plans at this time to bring in another QB. It's a rather surprising move considering neither QB has ever started an NFL game and between them they have combined for just 54 career passing attempts, all by Lewis. The team's candidates for a potential veteran QB has dropped and the Panthers haven't made contact with any of the other QBs, including Baltimore Ravens free agent QBs Trent Dilfer and Tony Banks. There is also no movement on the Steve Beuerlein trade front. The Panthers have one other QB on the roster, Matt Lytle, who spent the 2000 season on the Panthers practice squad after a brief stay with Seattle. The Panthers could still select a QB in the upcoming NFL draft.
