Thu, 02 May 2013 01:01:13 -0700 The Detroit Tigers optioned RP Bruce Rondon to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, May 1. In a corresponding move, Detroit says it will call up RP Luke Putkonen before the game Thursday, May 2, at the Houston Astros.
Thu, 25 Apr 2013 16:30:04 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon made his first major league appearance Thursday, April 25, against the Kansas City Royals, but it wasn't a good outing. He allowed an earned run and three hits to blow his first save, frittering away a one-run lead and win for SP Justin Verlander in the process. On a positive note, he was able to reach 100 mph on the Comerica Park scoreboard radar gun.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 16:45:20 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Jose Valverde will be recalled from the minors Wednesday, April 24, and manager Jim Leyland said he will serve as the team's closer. Fantasy Tip: Bruce Rondon was also called up from Triple-A Toledo today, but he'll likely be used in less stressful situations in his first taste of regular season big league action. There's a decent chance that Valverde is still available in your mixed league, so run to the waiver wire and grab him. Joaquin Benoit was never Detroit's long-term solution at closer and shouldn't be expected to receive any save chances moving forward with both Valverde and Rondon in the picture. Rondon is worth holding since Valverde hasn't been tested against major league competition since relinquishing the ninth-inning role to Phil Coke in the playoffs last year. Leyland has announced his loyalty to Valverde, but if he doesn't get the job done, Rondon will be given an opportunity to take the job and run with it.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 14:21:56 -0700 The Detroit Tigers plan to call up RP Jose Valverde from the minors within days. Fantasy Tip: Bruce Rondon was called up today, so the addition of Valverde will further complicate the Tigers' plans for the back end of their bullpen. Joaquin Benoit has done a solid job as the closer so far, but Jim Leyland may be getting ready to go back to a closer-by-committee soon if Valverde and Rondon prove effective. For now, hang onto Benoit until we know more. Rondon and Valverde are worth owning, too, but it's more speculation right now until we learn exactly how Leyland plans to use them.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 10:09:53 -0700 Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon didn't give up a single run in 7 2/3 innings while with Triple-A Toledo. He gave up five hits, walked two and struck out nine hitters.
Tue, 23 Apr 2013 10:07:19 -0700 The Detroit Tigers recalled RP Bruce Rondon from Triple-A Toledo Tuesday, April 23, after they placed RP Octavio Dotel (elbow) on the 15-day disabled list. Fantasy Tip: Jim Leyland and the Tigers haven't made any announcements that Rondon is in line to take save opportunities away from Joaquin Benoit, but Rondon should be scooped up if he's available. They'll likely have him working less stressful innings to build up his confidence, and if he performs well, he could eventually be knocking on the ninth-inning door once again.
Thu, 28 Mar 2013 15:35:29 -0700 Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland would like to see RP Bruce Rondon work on his two-seamer, four-seamer and slider in the minor leagues. "I don't think he needs to master the changeup; I think that's too much for a kid. Right now, for development purposes, just put the changeup on the back burner and get the command of the fastball and the breaking ball," Leyland said. The team could recall Rondon at any moment this year.
Thu, 28 Mar 2013 09:59:51 -0700 Detroit Tigers RPs Phil Coke, Joaquin Benoit and Octavio Dotel figure to see the bulk of save chances with manager Jim Leyland using a closer-by-committee setup to begin the season. RP Bruce Rondon will serve as the closer at Triple-A Toledo in order to try and find consistency. Rondon made a mechanical tweak this spring that seemed to help out, but the team wants him to work on it some more in the minors. General manager Dave Dombrowski didn't rule out the team bringing Rondon up quickly, but they aren't putting a time frame on it. Fantasy Tip: Coke may be the best option after Leyland relied on him late in last year's postseason when Jose Valverde struggled. However, they may only decide to use him in the ninth when they face mainly lefty hitters. All three are worth owning in AL leagues, and Rondon should probably be stashed in deep enough leagues.
Thu, 28 Mar 2013 05:39:55 -0700 The Detroit Tigers optioned RP Bruce Rondon to Triple-A Toledo. They'll go with a committee at closer. Fantasy Tip: Phil Coke stands out as the beneficiary due to his usage last season and in the postseason. Joaquin Benoit and Octavio Dotel could also be in the mix, but a dark horse candidate could be Drew Smyly. Keep an eye on Rondon's progress. He made significant strides late in spring training and looked as if he harnessed his control.
Wed, 06 Mar 2013 20:45:12 -0800 Detroit Tigers RP Bruce Rondon and pitching coach Jeff Jones were working on a mechanical tweak Wednesday, March 6, in hopes of re-gaining the command that helped Rondon last summer. Manager Jim Leyland said Rondon is not out of consideration for the closer role, but he also said Rondon had never been named the closer to begin with. "I think the best way to put it is, I think this kid is potentially a fantastic closing prospect," Leyland said Wednesday, March 6. "Is he ready for that? I can't answer that."
