Rangers | No structural damage for A.J. Griffin

Wed, 11 May 2016 10:00:21 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin's (shoulder) MRI exam showed no structural damage, and he can resume throwing once his symptoms are gone.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin's injury came at a bad time, as he was 3-0 with a sparkling 2.94 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in six starts (33 2/3 innings). Injuries hurt Griffin the last couple of seasons, but he's bounced back in a nice way. He's not a big strikeout guy (7.5 K/9), which limits his upside, but he should return to a rotation role when he's ready. Keep him stashed in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues.

Rangers | Rangers debate fifth starter options

Mon, 09 May 2016 17:35:11 -0700

Texas Rangers SP Anthony Ranaudo and RP Cesar Ramos are the club's choices to replace SP A.J. Griffin (shoulder) as their fifth starter. Both will be available during the series against the Chicago White Sox until the team determines when they'll need a fifth starter again.

Fantasy Tip: No matter who prevails with the job, neither is a recommended option for any format. Ranaudo has a career 5.68 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in nine starts and three relief appearances, while Ramos is a career journeyman who is simply better suited for the bullpen.

Rangers | Texas to use four-man rotation

Sun, 08 May 2016 13:22:06 -0700

Texas Rangers manager Jeff Banister plans to use a four-man rotation while SP A.J. Griffin (shoulder) is sidelined because the team has three off days in May.

Fantasy Tip: Cole Hamels, Martin Perez, Colby Lewis and Derek Holland should reach receive at least one extra start this month with Griffin out. All of the pitchers should be used in AL-only leagues, while all of the pitchers other than Holland could be attractive in mixed leagues.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin placed on DL

Sun, 08 May 2016 13:21:30 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday, May 8, because of right shoulder stiffness. The team recalled P Alex Claudio from Class AAA Round Rock.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers plan on using a four-man rotation with Griffin sidelined. Cesar Ramos appears to be the most likely candidate to start if the team needs a fifth starter but probably should only be owned in AL-only leagues at this point.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin bothered by stiff shoulder

Sat, 07 May 2016 11:25:21 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin (shoulder) left his start against the Detroit Tigers Saturday, May 7, during the third inning, due to right shoulder stiffness.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin allowed three runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings before exiting, with three walks and two strikeouts. The severity of Griffin's injury remains unknown, so keep checking back for further updates on his status.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin excelling

Thu, 05 May 2016 10:59:07 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin, who missed two years due to Tommy John surgery, has a 2.32 ERA and opponents are hitting only .180 off of him. His curveball has been a difference-maker this year, with opponents recording just two hits in 22 at-bats ending with that pitch this year.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin isn't generating a ton of fantasy buzz because of his lack of strikeouts (7.5 K's per nine innings), but his fine start should be turning heads at least in deep mixed and AL-only leagues. He's pitching so well that Texas is considering a six-man rotation once Yu Darvish (elbow) returns later this month.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin whiffs nine batters

Mon, 02 May 2016 20:27:09 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin allowed one earned run, three hits and two walks with nine strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision Monday, May 2, against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin has lasted at least six innings in four of his five outings this season, and he has five or more strikeouts in each of his four past assignments. He is a solid fantasy option across all formats with a 3-0 record and 2.32 ERA with 26 strikeouts across 31 innings and a 1.00 WHIP.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin pitches solid game

Wed, 27 Apr 2016 00:17:18 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin threw eight innings of solid baseball Tuesday, April 26, in a 10-1 win over the New York Yankees.

Fantasy Tip: Griffin improved to 3-0 with the win and shut down a Yankees lineup that had been pretty potent most of the season. Griffin missed most of the past two years due to Tommy John surgery, and a game like this makes Griffin look solid in fantasy circles.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin keeps up fine pitching

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 15:53:45 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin picked up a no-decision Wednesday, April 13, against the Seattle Mariners. He registered five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks. He also struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: If Griffin didn't top 100 pitches through his five innings of work, he would've had a shot at completing his second straight quality start in his return to the big leagues. In any event, the former Athletic has surprisingly been pretty good for his new club, compiling a 3.27 ERA in his first couple of assignments. It's hard to own a bottom-rotation pitcher from the Rangers, but Griffin will be worth a spot in deep leagues if he seemingly continues to approach his 2013 form when he won 14 ballgames.

Rangers | A.J. Griffin starting Friday

Thu, 07 Apr 2016 12:30:51 -0700

Texas Rangers SP A.J. Griffin is listed as the starter against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Friday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: The Angels scored just one run in their first two games of the season, and their lineup lacks depth behind Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Kole Calhoun. However, Griffin is very mediocre, at best, and must prove he can stay healthy and be effective before fantasy owners take a chance on him.
