Updating previous items, the Oakland Athletics will learn late Tuesday, April 29, or Wednesday, April 30 if SP A.J. Griffin (elbow) will need Tommy John surgery. After feeling some forearm/elbow discomfort in the spring, he was told to take three weeks off, and after five weeks the arm issue, originally diagnosed as right flexor tendinitis, was still giving him problems. He will be in Houston Tuesday to see Dr. Thomas Mehlhoff for a second opinion.

Oakland Athletics SP A.J. Griffin (elbow) will have Tommy John surgery on his right elbow next week, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Griffin was shut down from throwing five weeks ago, and his elbow is still giving him problems. He'll need around 12 to 18 months to recover from the procedure.
Fantasy Tip: As Stiglich acknowledges, the A's rotation has been fine in the absence of Griffin and Jarrod Parker, who also had Tommy John surgery. However, it increases the likelihood that Drew Pomeranz or Josh Lindblom will fill a valuable role in the rotation before long. Keep those two names tucked away in AL-only leagues.
