Twins | Ervin Santana scratched from start

Sun, 24 Apr 2016 12:15:47 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ervin Santana (back) was scratched from his start with a sore lower back Sunday, April 24, against the Washington Nationals. SP Tyler Duffey was called up from the minors to pitch in Santana's spot. Manager Paul Molitor said Santana needs to throw a bullpen session before hopefully returning in about a week. Molitor said the team won't rush Santana.

Fantasy Tip: Hang on to Santana for now while he heals. Duffey showed excellent control as a rookie in 2015 and induces plenty of ground balls, but his ability to generate strikeouts is in question with his offspeed pitches. He may only stick around for a little bit until Santana returns, so he's a speculative flyer in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues right now.

Twins | Ricky Nolasco wins fifth spot

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 07:41:07 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco won the fifth starter spot as SP Tyler Duffey was optioned to Class AAA Rochester Tuesday, March 29.

Fantasy Tip: Nolasco is merely an AL-only depth starter at this stage.

Twins | Tyler Duffey hurts his cause

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 13:28:36 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Tyler Duffey allowed four earned runs in four innings in Grapefruit League action Monday, March 28, to raise his spring ERA to 7.30.

Fantasy Tip: It's been a disappointing spring for Duffey, who is trying to win the final rotation spot over Ricky Nolasco. Nolasco has the experience and has had a better spring, too, so it looks ominous for Duffey. Duffey remains the more attractive fantasy piece in the long term, though, and speculate on him late in AL-only leagues for a minimal price.

Twins | Minnesota fifth-starter job up for grabs

Fri, 25 Mar 2016 13:54:55 -0700

Minnesota Twins SPs Tyler Duffey and Ricky Nolasco will both pitch Monday, March 28, which will likely be their finals bids to earn the job as the fifth starter. Manager Paul Molitor wants to have the roster trimmed to 25 before Friday, April 1.

Fantasy Tip: Duffey is the arm to own in cavernous mixed and AL-only leagues, but it doesn't mean he'll win the job. He posted a 3.10 ERA and struck out 53 batters through 58 innings over 10 starts in the second half last year. Nolasco has a career 4.54 ERA and is entering his age-33 season. At best, the veteran hurler is a low-end starter in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues.

Twins | Tyler Duffey expected to start

Tue, 01 Mar 2016 11:35:17 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Tyler Duffey is expected to be in the starting rotation, as manager Paul Molitor said it would take something "fairly significant" for Duffey not to be in the rotation.

Fantasy Tip: Duffey isn't a sexy fantasy pick, but he does have a nice combination of control and ground balls, which make him an attractive dart throw late in deep mixed leagues. The strikeouts won't be there with him, though.

Twins | Ricky Nolasco not guaranteed a spot

Tue, 02 Feb 2016 11:57:50 -0800

Minnesota Twins SP Ricky Nolasco is not guaranteed a spot in the starting rotation to open the season, according to manager Paul Molitor. Molitor said SP Tyler Duffey "has a really good chance" to crack the rotation. SP Tommy Milone is a player that will battle with Nolasco for a job, and RP Trevor May will receive a look, as well. SP Jose Berrios will receive a look and could become a rotation option sometime this season.

Fantasy Tip: Nolasco has posted ERAs over 5.00 each of the last two seasons and pitched only 37 1/3 innings in 2015 because of injury. It's a stretch to think he can help many fantasy owners outside of deep AL-only leagues if he wins a rotation spot. Duffey, despite a lack of pitch speed, can generate strikeouts with his diverse arsenal. He's not a bad gamble in deep mixed leagues in a pitcher's park if he wins a job.

Twins | Tyler Duffey won't be shut down

Fri, 25 Sep 2015 15:58:56 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Tyler Duffey isn't being shut down, according to general manager Terry Ryan. The team will continue to monitor him on a start-by-start basis. Duffey starts against the Detroit Tigers Saturday, Sept. 26.

Fantasy Tip: Duffey ($6,000, 12.0% of cap) has allowed more than three earned runs just once in his eight starts this year, and it came all the way back on Aug. 5. He's struck out a surprising 8.7 hitters per nine innings, too, and he's not a bad option for your second pitching spot on FantasyScore tomorrow.

Twins | Phil Hughes scratched from next start

Wed, 16 Sep 2015 17:14:26 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Tyler Duffey will start in place of SP Phil Hughes Sunday, Sept. 20, according to general manager Terry Ryan.

Fantasy Tip: Hughes ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) allowed three runs on six hits over three innings in a loss to the Detroit Tigers Tuesday, Sept. 15, in his first start since coming off the disabled list due to a back injury. Manager Paul Molitor said he wasn't sharp and had difficulty keeping the ball down. Duffey ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his last six starts and has four quality starts over that stretch, so he could be worthy of consideration as a value option in FantasyScore.

Twins | Tyler Duffey will be skipped

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 21:36:48 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Tyler Duffey will be skipped in the rotation, manager Paul Molitor said Tuesday, Sept. 8. The move is "just precautionary," and Molitor said Duffey is not being shut down.

Fantasy Tip: Duffey ($4,400, 8.8% of cap) should be avoided in FantasyScore until he can officially return to the rotation. It is uncertain when he'll make his next scheduled appearance.

Twins | Tyler Duffey coming back up

Thu, 13 Aug 2015 10:49:25 -0700

Minnesota Twins SP Tyler Duffey will be recalled from Class AAA Rochester to start against the Cleveland Indians Saturday, Aug. 15.

Fantasy Tip: Duffey was battered for six earned runs in just two innings in his major league debut in a spot start last week against the Toronto Blue Jays. This next start will be against a much more manageable opponent, but Duffey is still better left untouched in daily games.
