St. Louis Cardinals RP Seth Maness will serve as eighth-inning reliever going forward, according to general manager John Mozeliak.
Fantasy Tip: Maness has ascended to No. 2 in the Cards' bullpen with four holds and two saves on the season. While he doesn't tip the scales significantly in the strikeout department (career 5.7 K/9), his new role makes him a coveted arm for the save chasers in deep mixed and NL-only leagues.

St. Louis Cardinals RP Seth Maness has given up at least a run in four of his last five outings, and seven of his nine outings have resulted in losses. Maness may have his confidence shaken as a result, and manager Mike Matheny is looking to use him in long relief and with men on base. Matheny said Maness' struggles aren't because of an injury. "We've got to get him in there in situations where he can have success," Matheny explained. "It's really not anything more complicated than that. … We'd like to see Seth have a couple of outings where he comes in, pounds the bottom of the zone and trusts that sinker and see some ground balls. Gets a little confidence going and you'll see a world of difference."

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny expressed confidence in RP Seth Maness, but said Tuesday, April 29, that Maness needs to pick it up a bit to help the club. Last season, Maness was scored upon in just six of his first 27 appearances. This season, he has allowed a run in five of his nine outings. Last season, he had a ground-ball-to-fly-ball ratio of 5.50, but this year it is just 1.90. "What we're dealing with is a guy who (is struggling) - (something) every single one of them is going to go through at some point or another if they're around for very long - and trying to get it back," Matheny said. "It's not gone. It's just not available right now. He's just got to get it there." Matheny added that Maness is not dealing with any type of physical ailment.

St. Louis Cardinals P Carlos Martinez was promoted from Triple-A Memphis on Thursday, July 11, and is available to pitch in relief immediately. RP Seth Maness threw 48 pitches on Wednesday, July 10, in the club's contest against the Chicago Cubs, and RP Edward Mujica has appeared in six straight contests.
Fantasy Tip: The Cards are still committed to Martinez as a starter, his role at Memphis, and he may be an option to them after the break, eventually, in that capacity. But the bullpen is heavily taxed, and Martinez probably made the most sense in the short term. Mujica would seem to be unavailable today, so perhaps Trevor Rosenthal would receive a save opportunity if it arises.
