Rangers | Strikeouts a concern for Joey Gallo

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 15:25:59 -0800

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo struck out 179 times between Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach and Double-A Frisco, and the No. 1 thing on the agenda is to quiet Gallo's swing to limit his strikeouts, according to hitting coach Dave Madadan. "He's a big guy so he has a lot of moving parts. If we can cut down those variables and be more consistent with his swing, we can cut down those strikeouts, and his pitch selection will improve. It improved last year over 2013, so if we can continue that trajectory, we'll have a pretty special player."

Fantasy Tip: With just 68 at-bats at the Double-A level, Gallo is expected to start the season in the minors. Still, he is one of the premiere power prospects in baseball and is worth consideration in the endgame of deeper drafts, especially if he has a solid spring. Keeping tabs on his progress during the season for an early speculative add is encouraged in all formats.

Rangers | Joey Gallo reaches 40 bombs

Tue, 19 Aug 2014 10:45:11 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo hit his 40th home run of the season Sunday, Aug. 17, with Double-A Frisco. Gallo became the first hitter to record consecutive 40 home run seasons at the minor league level since 1982.

Fantasy Tip: The Rangers stated they aren't going to recall Gallo in September. He hasn't played above the Double-A level, so expect Gallo to begin 2015 in the minors. He could hit his way to the Texas lineup during the season, though.

Rangers | Joey Gallo to stay in minors

Mon, 11 Aug 2014 00:32:05 -0700

Despite putting up ridiculous numbers this season in terms of home runs, the Texas Rangers plan to keep 3B Joey Gallo in the minor leagues and not call him up in September.

Fantasy Tip: Power hitters with prodigious homer numbers can also be huge risks at the plate (Rob Deer or Ron Kittle, anyone?), but all signs point to Gallo being the real deal. If your league permits you to claim players in the minor leagues, pick him up. Die-hard baseball fans know about Gallo, and he was featured in a Sunday profile in The Dallas Morning News. Soon the secret will be out.

Rangers | Joey Gallo playing 1B

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 15:10:13 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo is playing first base at Triple-A Round Rock Friday, July 18. It's his second career start at first base, with the first coming July 7.

Fantasy Tip: It's not a coincidence that Gallo is playing first base a day after the Rangers cut Carlos Pena. It looks like they're prepping to call Gallo up to play first base at some point in the second half. Grab Gallo now in AL-only leagues, and considering stashing him in deep mixed leagues.

Rangers | Joey Gallo named Futures Game MVP

Mon, 14 Jul 2014 08:34:21 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo was named Most Valuable Player of the 2014 All-Star Futures Game after hitting a two-run home run that turned out to be the game-winner Sunday, July 13.

Fantasy Tip: Gallo's 31 homers in the minors this season are tied for first. He's a high-upside prospect whose progress will be determined by his plate discipline. He could arrive in the bigs in 2015 and has an outside shot of a September call-up, which means AL-only players could start stashing him.

Rangers | Joey Gallo playing first base

Mon, 07 Jul 2014 16:02:05 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo is playing first base in the minors Monday, July 7, but general manager Jon Daniels said it doesn't have anything to do with his future role with the club.

Fantasy Tip: Gallo has impressive pop. The Rangers are in big need of help at first base this year, so maybe Gallo comes up later in the second half to fill in. He's a speculative stash in AL-only leagues.

Rangers | Mitch Moreland to undergo ankle surgery Wednesday

Sun, 08 Jun 2014 11:20:09 -0700

Texas Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland (ankle) will undergo left ankle surgery Wednesday, June 11, and is expected to be sidelined for three months. "I'm doing everything I can and trying to battle through it, but it's to the point where it's affecting me trying to go out and play," he said. "It's hurting pretty bad. The surgery, I tried to fight it off until the end of the year. I knew I was going to have to have surgery. They told me you can do everything you can to try to get to the end of the year. I can't do it any more. I'm going to try to get back healthy and get ready to go."

Fantasy Tip: INF Donnie Murphy will handle first base for the immediate future. 1B/OF Jim Adduci (finger) would have been another internal option but he jammed his finger in a rehab game Saturday, June 7. General manager Jon Daniels said the team will not promote 1B/3B Joey Gallo from Class A Myrtle Beach.

Rangers | Joey Gallo nearing promotion

Sat, 17 May 2014 13:43:35 -0700

Texas Rangers 3B Joey Gallo has performed so well that he has opened the consideration of a promotion. The team doesn't have plans right now, but he could come up in June, according to general manager Jon Daniels.

Fantasy Tip: He's hitting .345-17-47 in High-A right now at the age of 20. It's not crystal clear that they're considering his promotion to the majors, but it sounds that way when the Super Two deadline passes in June. Start scooping him up in AL-only leagues.
