Phillies | Zach Eflin tosses shutout

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 18:54:47 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Zach Eflin (3-3) allowed three hits and struck out six batters in a shutout against the Pittsburgh Pirates Friday, July 22. It was his first career shutout and second career complete game.

Fantasy Tip: Eflin has posted a 2.08 ERA in his last seven outings, with five walks and 24 strikeouts over 47 2/3 innings, and has tossed six consecutive quality starts. He should be viewed as a decent option for NL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, although his tendency to pitch to contact won't result in high strikeout totals.

Mets | Jacob deGrom tosses one-hitter

Sun, 17 Jul 2016 15:22:08 -0700

New York Mets SP Jacob deGrom had a one-hitter Sunday, July 17, as the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-0. Phillies SP Zach Eflin had the lone hit for Philadelphia. DeGrom struck out seven, walked one and went the distance for the first time in 68 career starts. He hadn't pitched since July 6 because of the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: Whether it was the extra rest that deGrom got, the fact it was the Phillies, or something else, deGrom had a spectacular outing. He should be played in all formats, as so far deGrom has avoided the hard luck of other Met hurlers.

Phillies | Zach Eflin goes the distance

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 19:22:06 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Zach Eflin allowed just one earned run and six hits with no walks in a complete game victory against the Atlanta Braves Tuesday, July 5. He also struck out a career-high six batters in the 92-pitch efficient quality start.

Fantasy Tip: Eflin finally has a win to show for his efforts after three straight quality starts, and four outings in a row yielding three or fewer earned runs. He has emerged as a decent low-end NL-only fantasy option and DFS salary saver.

Phillies | Zach Eflin keeps Giants in check

Sat, 25 Jun 2016 00:03:50 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Zach Eflin scattered five hits over six innings, allowing just one unearned run against the San Francisco Giants on Friday, June 24.

Fantasy Tip: After a brutal major-league debut, Eflin has done a solid job in back-to-back starts: 11 2/3 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB and 4 K's. Even with that, Eflin remains more of an NL-only option due to his porous run support and tendency to pitch to contact, which severely limits his strikeout numbers.

Phillies | Zach Eflin struggles in debut

Tue, 14 Jun 2016 17:31:55 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Zach Eflin allowed eight runs on nine hits in 2 2/3 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday, June 14, to suffer his first loss of the season.

Fantasy Tip: It is not known if Eflin will remain in the rotation for the time being or if he will be sent back down to the minor leagues, so owners should monitor the situation. He should not have much value outside NL-only leagues at this point.

Phillies | Zach Eflin starting Tuesday vs. Jays

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 15:07:33 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Zach Eflin will make his major league debut against the Toronto Blue Jays Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: A first-round selection in the 2012 draft, Eflin posted a 2.90 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP and 7.2 K/9 over 68 1/3 innings through 11 starts with Class AAA Lehigh Valley. At this point, he should be left to cavernous mixed and NL-only leagues, and facing Toronto isn't an ideal spot to risk starting him Tuesday.

Phillies | Vincent Velasquez lands on DL

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 10:51:58 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Vincent Velasquez (biceps) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday, June 10. SP Zach Eflin is expected to take his spot in the rotation Tuesday, June 14.

Fantasy Tip: He leveled off after a meteoric start to the season, but his 73 K's in 61 2/3 innings keeps him a valuable chip in fantasy. The injury didn't sound too serious, and it's probably a case of the rebuilding team being super cautious with him. Eflin is 5-2 with a 2.90 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP in 11 starts at Class AAA Lehigh Valley. He doesn't strike a ton of guys out, but he's worth a look in NL-only leagues for depth.

Phillies | Zach Eflin could be called up

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 17:02:13 -0700

Philadelphia Phillies SP Zach Eflin could be recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley if SP Vincent Velasquez (biceps) is not able to make his next start. Eflin was scratched from his minor league start Wednesday, June 8.

Fantasy Tip: Eflin has posted a 3.14 ERA and 51 strikeouts in 10 starts for Lehigh Valley and currently has a 5-1 record. Owners in NL-only leagues and keeper leagues should stash him on their bench if they have the space. He would be a risky option if he is called up because he may have to face the Toronto Blue Jays.
