Cubs | Addison Russell hits grand slam

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 22:57:05 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell was 1-for-4 with a grand slam against the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday, July 27.

Fantasy Tip: Russell hasn't been an elite producer this season, but his 60 RBI are fifth-best among major-league shortstops, and he's currently enjoying his best month of 2016: .288-4-19 in 80 July ABs. He's a quality deep-mixed option and marginal starter in standard leagues.

Cubs | Addison Russell right back in the linup

Mon, 25 Jul 2016 14:11:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell (heel) is starting at shortstop and batting seventh against Chicago White Sox SP Miguel Gonzalez Monday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Russell exited the game with a minor heel injury Sunday, July 24, but it was never deemed a concern. Since he's right back in the lineup Monday, you can start him with confidence in all seasonal leagues. Russell is having a solid season with 39 runs, 11 home runs, 56 RBI and a .249/.338/.414 slash line, and he is a viable starter in the majority of formats.

Sun, 24 Jul 2016 13:03:29 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell (heel) left the game early Sunday, July 24, because of a left heel contusion.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to check on a possible timetable for Russell in the next day or two. He has recorded 11 home runs and 56 RBI this season and is a fine starting candidate for owners when he is healthy.

Fri, 15 Jul 2016 16:39:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI against the Texas Rangers Friday, July 15.

Fantasy Tip: Russell has recorded at least one hit in seven of his last nine games and has 11 RBI during that span. Owners in most leagues should consider Russell has a starting candidate.

Tue, 05 Jul 2016 16:39:47 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI against the Cincinnati Reds Tuesday, July 5.

Fantasy Tip: Russell has recorded six hits, three home runs and six RBI over his last three games and should be a starting candidate in daily fantasy leagues while he is on this hot streak.

Cubs | Jeimer Candelario starting at hot corner

Sun, 03 Jul 2016 07:56:17 -0700

Chicago Cubs 3B Jeimer Candelario will bat sixth in his MLB debut against New York Mets SP Noah Syndergaard Sunday, July 3. In addition, INF Javier Baez will bat seventh and play shortstop, while C David Ross starts behind the plate and bats eighth. SS Addison Russell and C Miguel Montero have the day off.

Fantasy Tip: The 22-year-old Candelario hit .333 in 25 games for Class AAA Iowa with 12 extra-base hits and is worth monitoring in keeper and dynasty formats, as well as deep seasonal leagues. Baez is 8-for-25 with two home runs and seven RBI over the past week and is an excellent option for daily fantasy games. Ross is receiving the start because SP Jon Lester is on the mound for Chicago but he is just 5-for-30 since June 1, and is not a recommended fantasy option.

Cubs | Addison Russell, Miguel Montero out

Tue, 28 Jun 2016 11:22:58 -0700

Chicago Cubs SS Addison Russell and C Miguel Montero are not in the starting lineup Tuesday, June 28. 2B/OF Javier Baez is starting at the 6 and is hitting sixth, while C David Ross is behind the plate and batting eighth against Cincinnati Reds SP John Lamb.

Fantasy Tip: It's a normal day off for Russell, while Montero sits against the lefty pitcher. Baez has a nice power-speed combination and is hitting .278 with four home runs and 15 RBI this month. He's a fine player to add to all fantasy lineups tonight. Ross is a light-hitting catcher that makes for a low-end DFS pick.

Cubs | Three Cubs shuffle bottom of order

Wed, 22 Jun 2016 07:43:08 -0700

Chicago Cubs C Willson Contreras, SS Addison Russell and OF Albert Almora are out of the lineup Wednesday, June 22, with C Miguel Montero, SS Javier Baez and OF Matt Szczur hitting sixth through eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Montero is hitting just .162 this month in what has been a down year for him offensively. However, Baez and Szczur have had success in June. The latter two are low-end options against Michael Wacha.

Nationals | Max Scherzer cruises past Chicago

Mon, 13 Jun 2016 19:59:43 -0700

Washington Nationals SP Max Scherzer allowed one earned run, two hits and no walks with 11 strikeouts over seven innings in a win Monday, June 13, against the Chicago Cubs. He carried a no-hit bid into the sixth inning before allowing a solo home run to SS Addison Russell. He is the 26th pitcher in major league history with at least 40 games with 10 or more strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Scherzer has won three straight starts, allowing a total of three runs over the past 22 innings. After a slow start to the season Scherzer is making up for lost time, and he has quickly re-emerged as a bona fide No. 1 fantasy option across all formats and DFS play.

Cubs | Javier Baez starting at shortstop

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 07:25:09 -0700

Chicago Cubs INF Javier Baez is starting at shortstop and batting seventh against Atlanta Braves SP John Gant Sunday, June 12. SS Addison Russell is not in the starting lineup Sunday.

Fantasy Tip: Baez is receiving more playing time of late and is rolling along an active 12-for-35 stretch at the plate with two home runs, nine RBI and a .933 OPS. In leagues where you only need five games at a position to earn eligibility, he's just three more appearances from being an option across the infield, which is pretty valuable. He should be owned in the majority of seasonal leagues. Russell is mired in an 8-for-47 funk at the dish and is likely best benched or replaced outside of deep mixed and NL-only formats.
