Cardinals | Three Cards regulars sitting

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 12:11:41 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals 1B Brandon Moss, OF Stephen Piscotty and SS Aledmys Diaz are not in the starting lineup Tuesday, April 19. 1B Matt Adams is at first base and hitting cleanup, OF Jeremy Hazelbaker draws another start in right field and is in the two-hole, and SS Ruben Tejada is starting at shortstop and batting eighth against Chicago Cubs SP Jason Hammel.

Fantasy Tip: Adams draws and can become an under-the-radar sleeper against a right-hander Tuesday in daily contests. He had all five of his long balls against righties last year. Hazelbaker has cooled off a bit but still has value in all fantasy formats as long as he's playing. Tejada is a low-end shortstop option who will steal playing time away from Diaz after coming off the DL yesterday.

Cardinals | Stephen Piscotty back in lineup

Fri, 15 Apr 2016 11:19:22 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Stephen Piscotty is back in the lineup batting fourth and starting at first base Friday, April 15, against Cincinnati Reds SP Tim Melville.

Fantasy Tip: Piscotty will be getting his first action of the season at first base, thanks to the emergence of Jeremy Hazelbaker in the outfield. The 25-year-old is out to a modest start, batting .281 with one homer and four RBI, but he could be solid tonight for daily lineups. He's registered multi-hit efforts in three of his last four contests, and could get in some good swings against a pitcher making just his second career start.

Cardinals | Stephen Piscotty not in first base plans

Wed, 09 Mar 2016 13:26:02 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Stephen Piscotty is not expected to play first base this season, according to manager Mike Matheny. "I think his time is best served right now continuing to work in the outfield," Matheny said.

Fantasy Tip: Piscotty posted a .305/.359/.494 slash line through 256 plate appearances with 29 runs, seven home runs and 39 RBI. He is a key piece for the Cards going forward and projects to have a solid season with upside to approach 20 home runs with an excellent slash line. He is a nice piece to round out your virtual outfield in the late rounds of drafts.

Cardinals | Matt Carpenter prefers leadoff spot

Thu, 03 Mar 2016 10:27:10 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals 3B Matt Carpenter prefers to stay in the leadoff spot. "I take a lot of pride in setting the tone for, OK, you're getting the St. Louis Cardinals' lineup today and here goes, right now," Carpenter said. The Cardinals struggled to score runs last year, so moving Carpenter down in the order a bit in 2016 has been discussed.

Carpenter's .378 on-base percentage since 2013 in the leadoff spot is the 12th-best in baseball and highest of any leadoff hitter. His .453 slugging percentage is the highest of any full-time leadoff hitter over that span, and his 132 doubles leads the majors since 2013. 2B Kolten Wong and OF Stephen Piscotty are other leadoff options this year.

Fantasy Tip: The Cards are likely to boot Carpenter from the leadoff spot this year. In a better run-producing spot, don't expect another season of close to 30 home runs from the sudden free hacker. He's also making less contact with his altered approach, so some regression is expected. Keep that in mind when drafting him in the early rounds.

Cardinals | Stephen Piscotty back in action

Mon, 29 Feb 2016 19:10:03 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Stephen Piscotty (illness) returned to the field Monday, Feb. 29, and he was in the lineup for an intrasquad game. He homered in the outing.

Fantasy Tip: Piscotty was slowed due to flu-like symptoms, but he is fine now and should build up his strength and stamina over the next couple of days. He hit .305 with seven homers and 39 RBIs in 63 games last season. Projected over an entire season, he could be in line for a .300 average, 20-25 homers and 100 RBIs, making him a solid fantasy option with upside.

Cardinals | Stephen Piscotty missing time

Fri, 26 Feb 2016 12:33:21 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals OF Stephen Piscotty (illness) was held out of on-field drills for the second consecutive day Friday, Feb. 26. The organization believes Piscotty is battling food poisoning.

Fantasy Tip: Piscotty has sneaky upside following an excellent debut in 2015. His .305/.359/.494 slash line plays in all formats, and he checks out as a solid target for the late middle rounds. The Cardinals have a crowded depth chart, though, so Piscotty may not have a long leash if he hits a sophomore slump. Still, you're targeting talent at the stage of the draft above all else, and Piscotty checks that box.

Cardinals | Stephen Piscotty may play 1B

Sat, 24 Oct 2015 06:13:48 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals OF Stephen Piscotty could see most of his playing time at first base next season if the team is able to re-sign impending free-agent OF Jason Heyward.

Fantasy Tip: Piscotty played well after being called up from the minor leagues in July and finished the regular season with a .305 batting average, seven home runs and 39 RBI. Piscotty could be a middle- to late-round draft pick in most mixed leagues next season.
