Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Andrew Heaney pitched 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits, a walk and three strikeouts Tuesday, March 24.
Fantasy Tip: Heaney is considered the favorite for a rotation spot. That said, this poor outing isn't likely to help him strengthen his hold on the job. He's a young pitcher with upside but more of an AL-only option than a mixed league consideration.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Andrew Heaney is the favorite to lock down the fifth starter spot, but he'll have to prove himself to stay in the majors when SP Garrett Richards (knee) returns in mid-April. Heaney gave up six runs and seven hits while walking one in 3 1/3 innings Thursday, March 19, to move his spring ERA up to 8.68. However, manager Mike Scioscia was encouraged with how Heaney responded to the shellacking.
Fantasy Tip: Heaney is a young arm worth watching after being one of the Miami Marlins' top pitching prospects. He has plenty to learn in the majors, and he'd likely benefit from more seasoning in the minors. With that in mind, he's more of an AL-only target, since he'll likely be without a rotation spot after the first month of the season.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Andrew Heaney has a "legitimate shot" at cracking the starting rotation, according to manager Mike Scioscia. "We think he's ready for the challenge of the major leagues," Scioscia said. "(Making a team for the first time) is sometimes the toughest bridge for a player to cross."
Fantasy Tip: Keep an eye on Heaney's progress. Heaney may be worth a flyer in late rounds of mixed leagues and deeper AL leagues if he makes the starting rotation.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Andrew Heaney believes his struggles in the majors last season prepared him for spring training and battling for a rotation spot. "It helped a lot," Heaney said. "I'm always going to be grateful for getting that opportunity to be able to go up there and experience it and face those kind of hitters and get kind of picked on a little bit."
Fantasy Tip: The key acquisition in the deal sending Howie Kendrick from the Angels, Heaney posted a 2.69 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP and a 3.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio during his minor league career. He'll have competition, but a strong spring should cement his spot in the team's rotation. Currently, he is a late-round flier in drafts, but his stock could rise in a hurry with an excellent showing during spring training.
