Rays | Richie Shaffer could be odd man out

Sun, 24 Jan 2016 09:04:14 -0800

Tampa Bay Rays INF Richie Shaffer could find himself in danger of not making the 25-man roster, with Steve Pearce, Logan Morrison and James Loney expected to share time at first base and designated hitter.

Fantasy Tip: The soon-to-be 25-year-old Shaffer batted just .189 last season but showed a promising amount of power, with three doubles and four home runs in 74 at-bats. Pearce and Morrison are expected to get the lion's share of the playing time and Loney could have all or part of the $8 million remaining on his contract eaten so that he can be moved to another team.

Rays | John Jaso, Grady Sizemore sitting out

Sat, 26 Sep 2015 08:17:01 -0700

Tampa Bay C John Jaso and OF Grady Sizemore are not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP David Price Saturday, Sept. 26. 3B Evan Longoria will serve as the designated hitter for the Rays. OF Brandon Guyer will start in left field and is batting first in the lineup. 3B Richie Shaffer will start at first base and is batting sixth.

Fantasy Tip: Jaso ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) and Sizemore ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) are sitting out because the team is facing a left-handed pitcher. Guyer ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) and Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) have posted decent numbers this month but neither player is a must-start option for owners.

Rays | James Loney out against Red Sox

Thu, 24 Sep 2015 13:32:16 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is not in the starting lineup Thursday, Sept. 24. 3B Richie Shaffer is starting at first base and batting eighth against Boston Red Sox SP Wade Miley Thursday.

Fantasy Tip: Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has played primarily against southpaws (50 of 71 plate appearances), but he owns a lowly .551 OPS against them. FantasyScore players should view him as nothing more than a desperation flier Thursday.

Rays | Evan Longoria serving as DH

Sat, 19 Sep 2015 11:44:43 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Evan Longoria will bat third and serve as the designated hitter against Baltimore Orioles SP Wei-Yin Chen Saturday, Sept. 19. INF Richie Shaffer will play third base and bat second.

Fantasy Tip: Longoria ($5,100, 10.2% of cap) is 2-for-27 over the past week, while Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) is just 4-for-28 at the plate this month. Neither player makes a great FantasyScore option today.

Rays | Richie Shaffer starting in left field

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 14:21:04 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Richie Shaffer is starting in left field and batting eighth against Detroit Tigers SP Kyle Lobstein Wednesday, Sept. 9. OFs Kevin Kiermaier and Grady Sizemore are not in the starting lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid both Kiermaier ($4,000, 8.0% of cap) and Sizemore ($3,300, 6.6% of cap) in all fantasy formats Wednesday, and it is worth noting Sizemore rarely plays against southpaws. Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) has been much better against righties this season, and at his cap hit, you should be able to do better at FantasyScore Wednesday. He is just 2-for-19 against lefties.

Rays | No James Loney Tuesday

Tue, 08 Sep 2015 11:34:23 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is not in the lineup against Detroit Tigers left-handed SP Matt Boyd Tuesday, Sept. 8. 3B Richie Shaffer is starting at first base and is hitting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Shaffer ($3,600, 7.2% of cap) slugged 26 home runs and drove in 72 runs in the minors this year, so his power can be useful on FantasyScore in a matchup like this against a weak left-handed arm. Consider him a sleeper pick tonight.

Rays | Richie Shaffer sent down

Mon, 17 Aug 2015 09:38:24 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Richie Shaffer was optioned to Class AAA Durham Monday, Aug. 17, and RP Enny Romero was recalled in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Shaffer ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) had played sparingly since his call-up earlier this month, and he had five hits in 19 at-bats, including two home runs and two RBI. Shaffer had 23 home runs and 59 RBI in 334 at-bats in two minor league stops, so he has intriguing power and could help those in deep leagues next month when rosters expand.

Rays | Richie Shaffer batting second vs. Texas

Fri, 14 Aug 2015 14:35:16 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Richie Shaffer is batting second as the designated hitter against Texas Rangers SP Martin Perez Friday, Aug. 14. C John Jaso is not in the starting lineup Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Shaffer ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is 0-for-5 against lefties to start his career, but he still holds the handedness advantage Friday. He checks out as viable value play at FantasyScore. Jaso ($3,500, 7.0% of cap) is usually the designated hitter and leads off against right-handed hurlers.

Rays | Richie Shaffer comes up big

Sun, 09 Aug 2015 19:07:33 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 3B Richie Shaffer went 3-for-3 with a tiebreaking, solo home run and three runs scored in a 4-3 win over the New York Mets Sunday, Aug. 9.

Fantasy Tip: The sample size is small, but Shaffer ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) is hitting .400 with two homers in four games since being called up. He is worth taking a chance on if you are looking for cap relief at FantasyScore.

Rays | James Loney sitting against White Sox

Mon, 03 Aug 2015 12:43:42 -0700

Tampa Bay Rays 1B James Loney is not in the starting lineup against the Chicago White Sox Monday, Aug. 3B Richie Shaffer is starting at first base and batting sixth against Chicago SP Jose Quintana Monday.

Fantasy Tip: Make sure to avoid Loney ($2,600, 5.2% of cap) in all fantasy formats Monday. After posting a .299 and .290 batting average the past two seasons, Loney is hitting just .263 this season, and if he isn't posting a plus-average, his fantasy stock isn't worth a roster spot in the majority of leagues. Shaffer is a player to monitor in AL-only and cavernous mixed leagues, as he posted a .595 slugging percentage with Class AAA Dunham this year.
