Cardinals | Michael Wacha wins seventh game

Sun, 24 May 2015 14:23:30 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha improved to 7-0 on the season with one unearned run and five singles given up in seven innings. The Cardinals beat the Kansas City Royals 6-2 on Sunday, May 24.

Fantasy Tip: Wacha ($7,600, 15.2% of cap) is the first pitcher to go 7-0 since Matt Morris began the 2005 season with an 8-0 start. Needless to say, he needs to stay in your lineup as long as this hot streak continues.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha beating up on aces

Thu, 23 Apr 2015 18:42:37 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha improved to 3-0 with a win Thursday, April 23, allowing one earned run on five hits in seven innings to best Washington Nationals SP Max Scherzer. His victory over Scherzer followed a pair of wins over Cincinnati Reds SP Johnny Cueto.

Fantasy Tip: Wacha ($6,100, 12.2% of cap) has allowed five hits and just one earned run in each of his three starts this year, and he has yet to lose despite facing some tough competition. Needless to say, he makes a great starting option at FantasyScore right now regardless of who opposes him on the mound.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha has innings cap

Fri, 10 Apr 2015 07:21:27 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha will have an innings cap, but it won't be a factor early on, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: Wacha threw 180 1/3 innings between the regular season and playoffs in 2013, and that greatly eclipsed their target for him because he pitched so well in the playoffs. A fair assumption would be around 150 innings in the regular season, which would allow for 30 playoff innings. Wacha ($6,100, 12.2% of your cap) is a midrange starter on FantasyScore Saturday at Cincinnati.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha to start Saturday

Wed, 08 Apr 2015 15:20:27 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha will have one more day of rest before the start of his 2015 season because of the team's rainout Tuesday, April 7. Wacha will make his debut against the Cincinnati Reds Saturday, April 11.

Fantasy Tip: Wacha ($6,700, 13.4% of cap) has the potential to be a fantasy ace in 2015 for the Cards. However, in his first start of the season against the Reds on the road, he might be worth ignoring this time around. The Reds should be much more productive on offense this year than they were in 2014.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha not walking hitters

Wed, 25 Mar 2015 15:41:23 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha admitted that he is happy about his lack of walks this spring. He issued his first walk Wednesday, March 25, after opening with 13 2/3 walk-free innings in spring training. "That's been one of the things coming into spring training -- filling up the zone, and not just with strikes, but with quality strikes," Wacha said. "I've been pretty happy with my ability to throw strikes so far this spring. I'm just going to continue to work on it and continue to pound the zone."

Fantasy Tip: Wacha could be an X-factor for fantasy baseball rosters in 2015. A new pitch could make him more effective at inducing swings and misses, too, and if he keeps his free passes down, look out. Wacha is a strong option as a No. 2 fantasy starter this year.

Cardinals | Another tidy outing from Michael Wacha

Sun, 15 Mar 2015 05:04:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha (shoulder) scattered two singles across three scoreless inning Saturday, March 14. He struck out two batters, and manager Mike Matheny said he has not worried about Wacha "one time" this spring.

Fantasy Tip: No one in the organization is worried about Wacha's health, so fantasy owners should hone in on the 23-year-old starter with confidence in the middle rounds. He had 83 strikeouts with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP through his first 90 1/3 innings pitched last season before his shoulder acted up on him. At this point, it appears he is no more likely to suffer an injury than any other starter, which could open up serious profit potential in the middle rounds of drafts.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha fares well in debut

Mon, 09 Mar 2015 14:42:29 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha (shoulder) made his first start of the spring Monday, March 9. He retired all six batters he faced with four swinging strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Entering just his age-23 season and with a clean bill of health, Wacha is in line for an excellent 2015 season. He was a popular pick in drafts last season, and his injury-interrupted 2014 year might drive his draft stock well into profit territory this spring. Keep in mind, he did have five wins and 83 strikeouts with a 2.79 ERA and a 1.12 WHIP through his first 90 1/3 innings pitched last season.

Cardinals | New pitch for Michael Wacha?

Fri, 13 Feb 2015 11:25:06 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha has a new curve that he throws harder than his normal hump-backed curve, and it includes a higher spin. His release point for the new curve is more extended than in the past, and he's been able to work on consistent release points for all of his pitches this offseason. "That is a testament to his offseason," pitching coach Derek Lilliquist said. "It's clear the work he's done."

Cardinals | Michael Wacha progressing nicely

Fri, 13 Feb 2015 11:24:31 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha (shoulder) threw his fifth bullpen session of the spring Friday, Feb. 13, and he was snapping off tight curves. "I definitely wanted to come into spring training ready to go," Wacha said after his workout. "Obviously, I'm not going full-out bullpen right there. I was real happy with the way the ball was coming out. The way the pitches were looking and coming along. There's still a bunch of work left. It's definitely making good progress." Wacha dealt with a stress fracture in his right shoulder last season. He hasn't had any unusual lack of flexibility or pain this offseason, but the Cardinals plan to ease him in this spring. Wacha will be on a normal throwing program, but the schedule gives the team flexibility if they want to give him more rest.
