Cardinals | Michael Wacha has solid outing

Sun, 17 Apr 2016 15:06:53 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha allowed three runs, one of which was earned, and seven hits in six innings Sunday, April 17. He did not get the decision as the Cardinals won 4-3 in the final innings.

Fantasy Tip: Wacha is off to a strong start in 2016, and he just had a bit of hard luck in this game. Keep him in your fantasy lineup.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha churns out nice outing

Mon, 11 Apr 2016 17:33:41 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha picked up his first win of the season Monday, April 11, against the Milwaukee Brewers. He registered six shutout innings, issuing four hits, one walk and striking out seven.

Fantasy Tip: There's the bounce-back performance owners were seeking from Wacha after his troubling start to the season last week in Pittsburgh. Wacha has generally been very steady throughout his first three years in the league, and there's been no indication he would suddenly stray away from that track record. He's worth plugging into starting lineups in just about all formats.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha struggles in first start

Tue, 05 Apr 2016 21:00:18 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha struggled with his curveball in his first start Tuesday, April 5, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He allowed five runs - four earned - and 10 hits with a walk and three strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings in a no-decision.

Fantasy Tip: It was an ugly fantasy line for Wacha and his owners, but there will certainly be better days. He is 2-0 with a 5.87 ERA in four career appearances (three starts) against the Milwaukee Brewers, the team he is scheduled to face next time out.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha struggles again

Sat, 19 Mar 2016 13:37:19 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha surrendered three runs - including a pair of homers - on seven hits over four innings in an exhibition loss to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, March 19.

Fantasy Tip: Before owners panic over his 7.88 ERA, Wacha has been working on a cut fastball this spring. The 24-year-old tired down the stretch last year, but he is certainly capable of building upon his 17-7 record and 3.38 ERA from a season ago if he is successful in adding the cutter to his repertoire. Owners should consider him a solid No. 2 starter in fantasy.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha to throw cutter more

Tue, 08 Mar 2016 16:53:42 -0800

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha has been told to throw more cutters. Although it might not lead to as many strikeouts, it could lead him to quicker outs and more innings in the long run. Wacha had a 7.88 ERA and his strikeout rate dropped and his walk right skyrocketed in September to close out the year. Wacha is believed to be on board with the changes after throwing his cutter 13% of the time in 2015. He considers the pitch a "work in progress."

Fantasy Tip: If not for fatigue late last year, Wacha would have had a much better campaign. A more efficient version of himself would be very valuable to fantasy owners, but his strikeout questions could be compounded. That's why Wacha is much better as a No. 2 fantasy pitcher.

Cardinals | St. Louis announces NLDS rotation

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 12:04:57 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SPs Jaime Garcia, Michael Wacha and Lance Lynn will pitch Game 2 through Game 4, respectively, against the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series.

Fantasy Tip: Wacha ($7,400, 14.8% of cap) and Lynn ($7,700, 15.4% of cap) both stumbled into the playoffs. Wacha posted a 7.88 ERA while allowing a .962 OPS to opposing hitters through his five September starts, and Lynn has allowed 13 runs over 27 2/3 innings over his six starts in September. Garcia ($7,800, 15.6% of cap) posted a more respectable 3.44 ERA through his six September outings, and all three are worth considering as No. 2 starting pitcher options at FantasyScore.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha's struggles continue

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 19:09:56 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha (17-7) allowed six runs on four hits over four innings in a loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday, Sept. 30. He walked four and struck out four.

Fantasy Tip: Wacha ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) fell to 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA over his last four starts. He should be avoided in FantasyScore for now.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha fading down the stretch

Wed, 30 Sep 2015 12:19:59 -0700

St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha has allowed 21 earned runs, 18 walks and 25 hits while striking out 19 and giving up seven home runs over 24 innings in his last four starts. He has gone six innings only once in that stretch.

Fantasy Tip: Those kind of numbers won't leave you very confident in using Wacha ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) on FantasyScore when the playoffs roll around at an elevated daily price.

The game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, was postponed due to inclement weather. Cardinals SP Michael Wacha was slated to face Pirates SP Charlie Morton.

Cardinals | Michael Wacha receiving rest

Wed, 02 Sep 2015 14:13:54 -0700

Updating a previous report, St. Louis Cardinals SP Michael Wacha was scratched from his start Wednesday, Sept. 2, purely as a way to give him extra rest down the stretch, according to manager Mike Matheny.

Fantasy Tip: Owners of Wacha ($8,100, 16.2% of cap) will be bummed that he didn't make the start tonight, but it may work out better for him in the short term to close out the season. A fresher Wacha could also be a better buy on FantasyScore down the stretch.
