The Washington Nationals have shut down SP Lucas Giolito for the rest of the season after he pitched 98 innings for Single-A Hagerstown, according to a source. The team is holding him out because he is coming off Tommy John surgery. Giolito went 10-2 with a 2.20 ERA and 110 strikeouts in 20 starts.

The Washington Nationals have held SP Lucas Giolito (elbow) from throwing since May 11 at Single-A Hagerstown on purpose. Giolito is in the final stages of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, and the team wants to put him on a throwing program to keep his arm fresh. "He's doing fine," general manager Mike Rizzo said. "It's part of his developmental program. He's doing what pitches do in between starts. He's on an innings limit, but because of his young age, we want him to get through an entire season, to feel what it's like to pitch at the end of a season."

Washington Nationals SP Lucas Giolito (elbow), who is just 19 years old and can hit triple digits with his fastball, believes he's a stronger pitcher following Tommy John surgery in 2012. Giolito also checked into camp weighing 255 pounds after ending last season at 240 pounds. He's likely to start 2014 at Low Single-A Hagerstown, and there is a good chance he'll be shut down late in the season to preserve his innings.
Fantasy Tip: Giolito has a promising future for the Nationals. He's likely a few years away from making an impact in the majors, however. Keep him on your radar in keeper leagues.

Washington Nationals SP Lucas Giolito (elbow), the club's top selection in the 2012 MLB Entry Draft, will make his first professional start Wednesday, July 3, for the Gulf Coast League squad. He had Tommy John surgery in August but has recovered fully. He's lined up to throw one or two innings.
Fantasy Tip: Be cautious with expecting too much from him too soon, but he could make a dent in the MLB rotation sometime in 2015 if he progresses. It's more likely he'd debut in the bigs later than that, though that doesn't remove keeper-league allure from the youngster.
