Kansas City Royals SP Kyle Zimmer (shoulder) will have surgery to repair thoracic outlet syndrome, and he's out for the season.
Fantasy Tip: The team's top prospect already had shoulder surgery he was coming back from before this issue was discovered. The surgery requires a rib to be removed that constricts a nerve in the neck and shoulder. It's usually a six-month recovery time. However, it's a fairly new procedure in the baseball world, and there aren't a lot of success stories yet. Watch his progress, but he might not sniff the majors until late in 2017.

Kansas City Royals SP Kyle Zimmer (back) won't play catch for at least six weeks because of a strained back muscle. Zimmer was off to a slow start this year in the minors due to biceps tendonitis. He went 6-9 with a 4.32 ERA in 22 starts for Single-A Wilmington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas in 2013.
Fantasy Tip: Zimmer is one of the club's top pitching prospects. Unfortunately for those that own him in keeper leagues or deep AL-only setups, the chances of him coming up this year and making an impact took a big hit with this latest injury.

The Kansas City Royals aren't expecting SP Kyle Zimmer to make an impact at the major league level early this season. "The goal would be to have him peaking in the minor leagues in late May, June, going into July," assistant general manager J.J. Picollo said. "And then really ramping it up and taking the handcuffs off him, hopefully in a playoff run, and he pitches in September and hopefully October." Zimmer has an invite to spring training, but he may not stay long as a competitor for the fifth rotation spot. The Royals' plan is to groom him to become a full-time member of the starting rotation for 2015. Picollo said 150 innings is a goal for Zimmer this year. Zimmer's development "is going to be a slow thing" this year, and Picollo said he'll likely start in Class AA or Class AAA.

Kansas City Royals SP Kyle Zimmer (biceps) might skip his next start with Double-A Northwest Arkansas as a precaution because of biceps soreness he suffered in his last start. The team said it's more of an issue of fatigue, and they are proceeding cautiously. Zimmer could also be shut down since the minor league season ends Sept. 2.
