Mariners | Mike Zunino sitting out

Sat, 23 Jul 2016 07:11:11 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is not in the starting lineup against Toronto Blue Jays SP R.A. Dickey Saturday, July 23. C Chris Iannetta will start at catcher and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Iannetta is hitting only .125 with one RBI this month and should be avoided in most fantasy leagues.

Mariners | Mike Zunino to see decent playing time

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:57:57 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is "going to get a chance to play a little, more than a one to two time a week scenario," according to manager Scott Servais. Zunino and C Chris Iannetta will split time.

Fantasy Tip: This is obviously bad news for Iannetta, who was really nothing more than a second backstop in two-catcher and AL-only leagues anyway. Zunino was hitting .286 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI for Class AAA Tacoma and has nice offensive upside for those in two-catcher and AL leagues. Snatch him up if you're in need.

Mariners | Nori Aoki, Mike Zunino starting

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:33:30 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Nori Aoki is starting in left field and hitting leadoff against Chicago White Sox SP Miguel Gonzalez Wednesday, July 20, and C Mike Zunino starts behind the dish and is batting eighth. C Chris Iannetta and 1B Dae-ho Lee will start on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Aoki and Zunino were just recalled from the minors before the game as the M's look to shake up their offense. Aoki should receive decent playing time against right-handers, but his mild contributions across all categories mainly make him an AL-only depth option. Zunino was showing nice improvement at the dish in the minors this year and cranked two homers in seven at-bats earlier this month when he came up. He could push Iannetta for decent playing time and is worth a look in two-catcher and AL-only formats.

Mariners | Seattle recalls a pair of hitters

Wed, 20 Jul 2016 10:07:08 -0700

Seattle Mariners OF Nori Aoki and C Mike Zunino were recalled from Class AAA Tacoma Wednesday, July 20. In a corresponding move, C Jesus Sucre and OF Daniel Robertson were optioned to Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: Aoki will enter the outfield mix and likely see semi-regular playing time against right-handed arms. He's a low-end fantasy option in deep leagues, though, as he's posted an underwhelming .245/.323/.313 slash line this year. Zunino hit .286 with 17 home runs and 57 RBI over 79 games with Tacoma and could push for the lion's share of start behind the dish before long. He's worth an add in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only leagues.

Mariners | Mike Zunino optioned to minors

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 15:56:05 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma Wednesday, July 6, and C Jesus Sucre (leg) was activated from the 60-day disabled list to serve as the backup to C Chris Iannetta. The Mariners would like Zunino to see regular playing time, but manager Scott Servais said Zunino would be back in the second half. Zunino was 2-for-7 with two home runs in two games for Seattle.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino has the most offensive upside of any catcher on Seattle's roster, even Iannetta. The M's plan to give Zunino significant playing time in the second half, so a case can be made to keep him stashed in two-catcher and deep AL-only leagues. Sucre can be avoided everywhere.

Mariners | Mike Zunino may see more playing time

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 13:54:13 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino has a chance to receive "significant" playing time with the Mariners during the second half of the season, according to manager Scott Servais. Servais said the team liked what they saw from Zunino in Class AAA Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: Owners should monitor the situation to see if Zunino will receive most of the starts after the All-Star break. He should be owned in AL-only leagues and two-catcher leagues if he becomes the starter but probably can be avoided in most mixed leagues.

Mariners | Mike Zunino cracks pair of homers

Sat, 02 Jul 2016 23:38:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino went 2-for-4 with a walk, two homers and three RBIs Saturday, July 2, against the Baltimore Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino was needed in the majors with veteran Steve Clevenger breaking his hand. So far, so good. Don't overvalue him based on this one performance, but he is worth adding as a No. 2 receiver in deeper AL-only fantasy formats and as a value play in DFS when he starts.

Mariners | Mike Zunino coming up

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 14:58:52 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino was recalled from Class AAA Tacoma Thursday, June 30, after he was hitting .282 with 15 home runs and 51 RBI in 69 games. He also had a .366 on-base percentage and .516 slugging percentage.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino was needed after a hand injury to Steve Clevenger that will keep him out indefinitely. Zunino's development has been slower than expected, but he made strides in the minors this year and has more offensive upside than Chris Iannetta. However, until he proves himself for decent playing time, he's merely one to monitor in two-catcher and AL-only formats.

Mariners | Mike Zunino to stay in minors?

Thu, 30 Jun 2016 08:57:04 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is the only catcher the Mariners have at Class AAA Tacoma and on the 40-man roster after C Steve Clevenger's (hand) injury, but Seattle has said they would like to keep Zunino in the minors for the majority of the year to fix some of his hitting issues.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino was a highly touted catching prospect coming out of Florida, but he hasn't lived up to expectations so far. However, he's showing improvement with a .282/.366/.516 slash line and 15 homers and 51 RBI at Tacoma this year. The M's may be forced to call him up with Clevenger out indefinitely, and he could become useful in two-catcher and AL-only leagues for his power if he sees enough starts alongside Chris Iannetta. Stay tuned.

Mariners | Mike Zunino raking in minors

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 16:48:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is hitting .447 in his first nine games at Class AAA Tacoma, and has homered in five straight games entering Tuesday, April 19. However, manager Scott Servais is not going to rush him back to the major leagues, instead opting to lean on the club's personnel people and scouts to let him know how long he needs in the minors before he's ready for a promotion.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino has always displayed mega home run potential since first coming up a few years ago, but in the process, his average has also been down in the toilet as well, making it hard for fantasy owners to rely on him consistently. Even with his current surge, it could still be a little while before he reaches the Mariners again, especially with Chris Iannetta performing fine as the club's starting backstop.
