Mariners | Mike Zunino raking in minors

Tue, 19 Apr 2016 16:48:47 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is hitting .447 in his first nine games at Class AAA Tacoma, and has homered in five straight games entering Tuesday, April 19. However, manager Scott Servais is not going to rush him back to the major leagues, instead opting to lean on the club's personnel people and scouts to let him know how long he needs in the minors before he's ready for a promotion.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino has always displayed mega home run potential since first coming up a few years ago, but in the process, his average has also been down in the toilet as well, making it hard for fantasy owners to rely on him consistently. Even with his current surge, it could still be a little while before he reaches the Mariners again, especially with Chris Iannetta performing fine as the club's starting backstop.

Mariners | Mike Zunino continues to mash

Mon, 18 Apr 2016 13:42:57 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino has hit a home run in five consecutive games for Class AAA Tacoma, including two home runs during the game Monday, April 18.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino has post-hype appeal, as the once highly touted prospect already has a 20-bomb season on his resume. The issue has always been his sub-.200 batting average (.193 career mark), but if Zunino makes his way to Seattle, he should be owned in cavernous mixed, two-catcher and AL-only formats. It might also be worth taking a speculative flier on Zunino sooner than later.

Mariners | Mike Zunino likely opening in minors

Thu, 28 Jan 2016 11:52:17 -0800

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is likely to begin the season in Class AAA, according to general manager Jerry Dipoto.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino is a solid second catcher flyer, but his fantasy value is on life support right now.

Mariners | Mike Zunino to take back seat

Mon, 23 Nov 2015 18:55:28 -0800

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino has company behind the plate, as the team signed C Chris Iannetta (Angels). General manager Jerry Dipoto said Iannetta was brought in to serve as the team's primary catcher.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino's future is unclear, as it is uncertain if he will be the team's backup, if he will be used as the designated hitter, learn a new position or be traded to another organization. Right now, his fantasy outlook is certainly in the air.

Mariners | Mike Zunino to retool his swing

Wed, 09 Sep 2015 11:47:03 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino will report to the instructional league after hitting .174 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI with 132 strikeouts in 112 games this year. Despite the disappointing year, manager Lloyd McClendon said Zunino is very much in the team's future plans as the starting catcher.

Fantasy Tip: Zunino clearly has plenty of power to spare, but he must figure out a way to shorten his swing and make more contact if he's to regain a starting role in 2016. Because of his down season, he'll come for pennies on the dollar in fantasy drafts next year, but he'll likely only be targeted in two-catcher and AL-only leagues to begin.

Fri, 28 Aug 2015 10:38:06 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino was optioned to Class AAA Tacoma Friday, Aug. 28. The team recalled John Hicks from Tacoma.

Fantasy Tip: Hicks and Jesus Sucre ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) will likely share catching duties for now. However, neither are worth owning or using on FantasyScore.

Mariners | Jesus Sucre draws into lineup

Wed, 26 Aug 2015 10:17:01 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Jesus Sucre is starting behind the dish and is hitting ninth against Oakland Athletics SP Chris Bassitt Wednesday, Aug. 26. C Mike Zunino will start on the bench.

Fantasy Tip: Ignore Sucre ($1,600, 3.2% of cap) everywhere. He's hitting a meager .103 (6-for-58) on the season and is facing a pitcher who has been very stingy since joining the Oakland rotation.

Mariners | Jesus Sucre catching Sunday

Sun, 23 Aug 2015 11:34:12 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Jesus Sucre will bat ninth against Chicago White Sox SP John Danks Sunday, Aug. 23. C Mike Zunino is receiving the day off.

Fantasy Tip: Even though Sucre ($1,500, 3.0% of cap) is 2-for-5 in his career against Danks, his .088 mark this season means he should be avoided in all fantasy formats.

Mariners | Mike Zunino not in lineup

Fri, 21 Aug 2015 15:34:51 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is not in the starting lineup Friday, Aug. 21. C Jesus Sucre is behind the plate and is hitting ninth against Chicago White Sox SP Chris Sale.

Fantasy Tip: Sucre ($1,500, 3.0% of cap) is hitting under .100 as the Seattle backup catcher and is facing a lefty hurler that fanned 15 hitters his last time out. That's really all you need to know to ignore Sucre on FantasyScore.

Mariners | Mike Zunino resting

Tue, 18 Aug 2015 15:05:28 -0700

Seattle Mariners C Mike Zunino is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, Aug. 18. C Jesus Sucre is behind the plate and is batting ninth against Texas Rangers SP Chi Chi Gonzalez.

Fantasy Tip: Sucre ($1,500, 3.0% of cap) has only five hits in 51 at-bats (0.98 average). Even against a very average pitcher, Sucre should be avoided everywhere.
