Houston Astros SP Mark Appel is expected to make two more starts for Class A Quad Cities before being shut down for the season, including the playoffs, general manager Jeff Luhnow said Tuesday, Aug. 13.
Fantasy Tip: The No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 draft is a stud in long-term fantasy keeper leagues, but those in re-draft formats will want to avoid him even in 2014.

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's First-Year Player Draft, has been promoted to Class A Quad Cities. He joins 2012 No. 1 overall pick SS Carlos Correa.
Fantasy Tip: Appel is supposed to be on the fast track. Most fantasy owners won't need to pay much attention until he arrives at the Class AA level, but they should become familiar with the polished righty.

Houston Astros SP Mark Appel made his professional debut Friday, July 5, for Class A Tri-City, allowing two runs and three hits with one strikeout in two innings. His first pro pitch was hit over the center fielder's head for a triple, but he settled down somewhat after the uneven start. He needed just seven pitches for a perfect inning in the second before departing. He threw 19 of his 26 pitches for strikes. A scout at the stadium had Appel's velocity a little higher than the stadium gun, registering at 94-95 mph.

Houston Astros P Andrew Thurman, the first pick of the second round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft, said that he has agreed to a contract and is set to sign it early next week.
Fantasy Tip: Now the Astros will turn their attention to negotiations with Mark Appel, which could take significantly more time but stand a reasonable chance of going smoothly once the two sides begin to talk seriously.

Houston Astros P Mark Appel, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 First Year Player Draft, hasn't been engaged in serious negotiations yet. General manager Jeff Luhnow said his plan is to engage Appel next week. Luhnow is hopeful that the two sides can move quickly once they begin dialogue, but he has no timeframe to complete negotiations.
Fantasy Tip: This would seem to contradict an earlier Jeff Passan report somewhat. Appel wound up not signing with the club that drafted him last year, the Pittsburgh Pirates, because of signability issues -- a reason that he slipped to No. 8 overall in 2012. It's not expected to be as big of an issue this time around, but one never knows, especially when Scott Boras is involved. Complications would delay the start of his pro career, and a long delay is never beneficial. They should reach agreement eventually, however.

Houston Astros P Mark Appel, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 First Year Player Draft, isn't subject to the July 12 signing deadline that other players are, which means he could make negotiations difficult for his new pro team. The organization and Appel are nearing a deal, according to sources, and one source expects him to sign by the middle of next week.
Fantasy Tip: That'd be fantastic news for fantasy owners in keeper leagues. When a Scott Boras client is involved, there isn't often much certainty. Hopefully, nothing delays the start of the promising right-hander's pro career.
