Marlins | Justin Nicolino optioned

Fri, 08 Jul 2016 11:17:08 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans Friday, July 8. C Tomas Telis was recalled from New Orleans in a corresponding move, and P Eric Jokisch was outrighted.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino could very well find himself back in Miami's starting rotation following the All-Star break. However, the lefty isn't all that attractive outside of NL-only leagues after sporting a 5.57 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and just 4.2 K's per nine in 12 starts this year.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino suffers loss Wednesday

Wed, 15 Jun 2016 19:02:49 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino (2-4) allowed five runs on 10 hits over 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the San Diego Padres Wednesday, June 15, with no walks and three strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino has allowed 10 runs over his last two outings and has pitched fewer than six innings in each of his last seven starts, so he should not be viewed as a recommended fantasy option. His next scheduled start will come versus the Atlanta Braves Tuesday, June 21, but his inconsistency and low strikeout totals mean he should be avoided.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino records career high in K's

Wed, 25 May 2016 21:36:43 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino picked up a no-decision in his start Wednesday, May 25, against the Tampa Bay Rays. He went 5 2/3 innings, yielding three runs on eight hits and one walk. He also struck out a career-high six batters.

Fantasy Tip: While six strikeouts may not seem like a lot, it's still a positive step for the 24-year-old, who has had issues racking up strikeouts since first coming up last season. Nicolino has put together some acceptable work through his first six starts of the campaign, but his ceiling is low, which is why he's better suited for NL-only leagues at the moment.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino defeated by Washington

Fri, 20 May 2016 19:30:22 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino (2-2) allowed four runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Washington Nationals Friday, May 20, with no walks and two strikeouts.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino fell to 0-3 in three lifetime starts versus the Nats and the Fish are winless in his last three outings. Nicolino's next scheduled start will come against the Tampa Bay Rays Wednesday, May 25, but he should be viewed as a somewhat risky play based on his recent performance.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino dazzles in '16 debut

Thu, 28 Apr 2016 03:37:21 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino was tremendous in his season debut Wednesday, April 27, against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He logged 7 1/3 shutout innings, surrendering only two hits, two walks and striking out two.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino's season debut could not have gone any better, as he stifled a tough Dodgers club on the road throughout the entire evening. As always, though, he didn't post many strikeouts, punching out only two batters, but if you can look past that, there might be some value here in deeper leagues. He certainly has the ability to stick in the major league rotation after displaying some potential as a rookie last year.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino to start Wednesday

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 17:09:25 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino will start Wednesday, April 27, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, according to manager Don Mattingly.

Fantasy Tip: It's not the most desirable of matchups for streaming purposes but owners might want to be tracking Nicolino anyway. The 24-year-old southpaw was solid as a rookie last season, posting a respectable 4.01 ERA in 12 starts. The problem, of course, is that he doesn't rack up many K's. In fact, Nicolino possessed just a 23-to-20 K/BB ratio over 74 total innings. Even so, he might be someone capable of contributing to fantasy teams in deeper leagues.

Marlins | Martin Prado back, Jarred Cosart optioned

Tue, 26 Apr 2016 13:41:29 -0700

Miami Marlins 3B Martin Prado was reinstated from the paternity list Tuesday, April 26, and SP Jarred Cosart was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans in a corresponding move. SP Justin Nicolino could make the start Wednesday, April 27, after going 2-2 with a 3.60 ERA for New Orleans. Cosart was 0-1 with a 7.89 ERA in three starts, and he walked 15 in 14 2/3 frames with eight strikeouts. Cosart mentioned he wasn't happy with his mechanics and didn't "feel natural" with his lower hand placement.

Fantasy Tip: Return Prado to your starting lineups wherever you own him. Cosart can likely be dropped wherever he's owned, as he's no sure bet to rejoin the rotation anytime soon. Unlike Cosart, Nicolino has great control, but that's really where the intrigue ends. He could be a short-term stream option in the right matchups in the deeper and daily leagues.

Marlins | Adam Conley making his case

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 10:23:27 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Adam Conley is making a case to be the team's fourth starter, and he's impressed manager Don Mattingly this spring. SPs Jarred Cosart, Justin Nicolino, Jose Urena, Edwin Jackson and David Phelps are fighting for the final rotation spot.

Fantasy Tip: It took Conley a while to get going after tendonitis issues stemming from 2014, but he's not a bad end-game target in really deep mixed leagues and NL-only formats if he wins a rotation spot.

Marlins | Plenty of contenders for Miami rotation

Tue, 23 Feb 2016 22:13:02 -0800

Miami Marlins SPs Adam Conley, Edwin Jackson, Justin Nicolino and David Phelps are among the candidates battling for the final two rotations spots in spring training. Internally many believe Nicolino has the higher ceiling. SPs Kendry Flores, Brad Hand and Jose Urena are considered long shots at this point.

Fantasy Tip: The winner of the No. 4 and 5 job has little appeal in mixed fantasy formats, but with a healthy lineup providing run support they wouldn't be bad fantasy options in most NL-only formats.
