Marlins | Justin Nicolino a rotation option?

Wed, 29 Jul 2015 10:39:50 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino could be the closest member of Class AAA New Orleans to a call-up to fill the rotation void left when SP Mat Latos was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro speculates.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino had a 4.09 ERA in two starts for the Marlins earlier this year, and he's gone 6-6 with a 3.43 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 105 innings for New Orleans in 2015. The left-hander would definitely be in consideration for a pickup in deep mixed leagues if he secures a rotation spot in Miami for the rest of the season.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino sent down

Wed, 01 Jul 2015 09:58:36 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino was optioned to the minors Tuesday, June 30.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino ($4,600, 9.2% of cap) had a 4.09 ERA in two starts for the Fish, but he is making room in the rotation for the return of ace Jose Fernandez ($7,600, 15.2% of cap), who is coming off Tommy John surgery. Fernandez should be owned in all leagues and will likely be a popular target on FantasyScore immediately. However, you may want to temper expectations against the San Francisco Giants in his season debut tomorrow. The Giants are one of the best offensive clubs on the road this year.

Marlins | Justin Nicolino sharp in debut

Sun, 21 Jun 2015 09:17:18 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Justin Nicolino tossed seven scoreless innings against the Cincinnati Reds in an emergency spot start Saturday, June 20, after SP Tom Koehler (neck) was scratched with a neck injury. Nicolino gave up just four hits and two walks after sporting a 2.87 ERA in 78 1/3 innings for Class AAA New Orleans this year.

Fantasy Tip: Nicolino is the team's No. 3 ranked prospect, per MLB.com, and the left has really stood out in Miami's system the past two years. The southpaw doesn't miss many bats and has seen his strikeout numbers drop in recent seasons, but he can be effective when he's spotting his pitches, and he could be an effective spot starter when throwing in pitching-friendly Miami. However, it's unknown if he'll remain in the rotation, and his fate could be tied to that of Koehler.

Marlins | MIA uncertain who will start Tuesday

Sat, 23 May 2015 10:27:45 -0700

The Miami Marlins are expected to recall RPs Vin Mazzaro and Andre Rienzo from Class AAA New Orleans to replace injured SPs Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) and Mat Latos (knee) on the 25-man roster. The team will not need another starting pitcher until their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday, May 26, when either SP Justin Nicolino or Jose Urena could be promoted.

Fantasy Tip: As a result of Alvarez and Latos being placed on the disabled list, it's possible that whoever gets the starting nod for Tuesday's game will stick around in the rotation for at least one more start. Nicolino, who is one of the organization's top prospects, is 3-1 with a 2.09 ERA in eight starts for New Orleans, while Urena has pitched even better, going 4-0 with a 1.21 ERA in six starts.

Marlins | Andrew Heaney, Justin Nicolino performing well

Fri, 30 May 2014 15:43:25 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Andrew Heaney earned the win for Triple-A New Orleans Tuesday, May 27, by giving up just one hit in seven innings while walking none and striking out seven. He has allowed a run on eight hits with no walks and 14 strikeouts in his first 11 innings with New Orleans. Meanwhile, SP Justin Nicolino, didn't give up a hit with Double-A Jacksonville until the seventh inning Thursday, May 29. Nicolino has won four of his six decisions for a 3.30 ERA with nine walks and 27 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings.

Fantasy Tip: Heaney or Nicolino, or both, could be up in the bigs pitching by the end of the year. Heaney is the bigger prospect and will command more attention in fantasy leagues if he's called up. If you're in a deep mixed league, you might want to think about stashing Heaney soon.

Marlins | Jacob Turner guaranteed spot?

Wed, 12 Feb 2014 15:33:17 -0800

Miami Marlins SP Jacob Turner is all but guaranteed a starting rotation spot this year. President of baseball operations Michael Hill mentions SPs Brad Hand, Brian Flynn and Tom Koehler as candidates to compete for the fifth and final rotation spot. SPs Andrew Heaney, Justin Nicolino, Adam Conley and Anthony DeSclafini will receive spring innings to prove themselves, but they'll likely start in the minors.

Marlins | Jose Fernandez to be shut down

Thu, 15 Aug 2013 09:15:53 -0700

Miami Marlins SP Jose Fernandez will be shut down at around 170 innings this year. He's currently at 139 2/3 innings, so he could be shut down before the season's final month. Fernandez had never pitched above Class A before this season as a 21-year-old. The team could decide to shut SP Jacob Turner down, too, if he shows signs of fatigue. SPs Brad Hand and Brian Flynn could be called up in September to help fill the rotation. SP Sam Dyson is another candidate. It's doubtful SPs Andrew Heaney, Anthony DeSclafini or Justin Nicolino will be recalled from Double-A Jacksonville.

Fantasy Tip: Fernandez, at 8-5 with a 2.45 ERA and 149 strikeouts, is a heavy favorite for NL Rookie of the Year honors. He's been fantastic, but the time to utilize his talents is running out. Just be aware. Any of the young hurlers the Marlins may call up would only be useful for a start or two in deep NL-only leagues. If you're in the running for a fantasy championship, it's probably wise not to rely on them.
