Yankees | Chase Whitley to stick around

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 18:19:26 -0700

Updating a previous report, New York Yankees SP Chase Whitley started Tuesday, April 28, against the Tampa Bay Rays, and he is expected to remain in the rotation while SP Masahiro Tanaka (forearm, wrist) is sidelined.

Fantasy Tip: Whitley has struggled going deep into games at the big league level and the minors, so FantasyScore owners shouldn't expect him to suddenly start ripping off quality starts. Avoid him unless he somehow puts it together and starts pitching effectively.

Yankees | Chase Whitley has short outings

Tue, 28 Apr 2015 17:41:29 -0700

New York Yankees SP Chase Whitley averaged less than five innings pitched per start in 2014, and was averaging 5 2/3 innings per outing this season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Fantasy Tip: Whitley was filling in for the injured Masahiro Tanaka Tuesday, and he is likely to stick around for the next two weeks. However, FantasyScore players should be really careful with using Whitley who obviously hasn't been going very deep into games at either the big league level or the minors lately.

Yankees | Chase Whitley to start Tuesday

Mon, 27 Apr 2015 22:55:09 -0700

The New York Yankees will recall SP Chase Whitley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Tuesday, April 28, against the Tampa Bay Rays, as they want to give SP Masahiro Tanaka a full five days of rest before his next outing.

Fantasy Tip: Whitley posted a 2-0 record with a 2.12 ERA in three starts for SWB, but he isn't a recommended fantasy option in any format since he'll likely be headed right back to Pennsylvania after his outing is over.

Yankees | NY may use six-man rotation

Wed, 18 Feb 2015 13:56:30 -0800

New York Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild indicated that the team may go with a six-man rotation to open the season to reduce early-season strain on arms. The Yankees have a stretch of 30 games in 31 days starting April 17. The team is already dealing with several injury questions in their starting five. Ps Bryan Mitchell, Esmil Rogers, Adam Warren and Chase Whitley are building up stamina this spring, and each of them could be used as either starters or relievers.

Fantasy Tip: None of the Yankees' options for the sixth rotation spot to begin the season are really worth consideration in standard fantasy baseball leagues, mainly because this scenario is likely to be short-lived. However, whoever is slated to be the sixth rotation arm to start the year may be worth a small investment as a late-round flier in AL-only leagues.

Yankees | Rotation options for David Phelps

Mon, 04 Aug 2014 18:33:03 -0700

The New York Yankees might look to P Esmil Rogers as a rotation replacement for SP David Phelps (elbow), or SP Chase Whitley, who relieved Phelps Sunday, Aug. 3. Whitley made 12 starts before being shifted to the bullpen. There is also an outside chance SP Michael Pineda (shoulder) could be in the mix, although manager Joe Girardi seemed to indicate Monday that is unlikely for now.

Yankees | Chris Capuano starting Saturday

Fri, 25 Jul 2014 13:38:47 -0700

New York Yankees SP Chris Capuano will start Saturday, July 26, against the Toronto Blue Jays. SP Chase Whitley will lose his rotation spot and pitch out of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Capuano hasn't started a game all season, so his innings should be limited. It could take a few starts to stretch his arm out. He is worth a speculative flier in AL-only formats and could develop into a matchup-related deep-mixed play. Obviously, Whitley's value plummets, and he isn't worth a roster spot, at this point.

Yankees | Sunday starter unknown

Thu, 10 Jul 2014 10:09:03 -0700

The New York Yankees are not listing a starter for the game against the Baltimore Orioles Sunday, July 13, with SP Masahiro Tanaka (elbow) on the disabled list. SP Chase Whitley could be an option, or the team could use a bullpen approach right before the All-Star break.
