Angels | Matt Shoemaker gets knocked around

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 23:46:44 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker allowed seven runs over just 2 1/3 innings Saturday, April 30, against the Texas Rangers while recording just one strikeout.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker has been touched for 13 runs in just 5 1/3 innings in two outings against Texas this season. Remember that, and avoid him in DFS play and most fantasy formats the next time these clubs square off.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker sharp out of nowhere

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 16:35:10 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker came through with an outstanding outing Wednesday, April 13, versus the Oakland Athletics. He tossed six shutout innings in which he issued just one hit, three walks and struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: Where did this come from? Shoemaker had a horrendous spring, and then got bombed by the Rangers in his first start of the year last Friday. Perhaps Nick Tropeano's sharp outing on Monday lit a fire under Shoemaker? Whatever the case, he's not worth adding in any leagues just yet. He'll have to string together a few more in a row before he even gets consideration.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker struggles Friday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 05:18:47 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings against the Texas Rangers Friday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker struggled during spring training as well but likely will receive at least a few more starts. Shoemaker probably should only be used in AL-only leagues at this point and may only be a spot starter for owners.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker continues struggles

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 16:54:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker continued his spring struggles on Tuesday, March 29. In a minor league game, he logged five innings, en route to giving up eight runs (five earned) on 13 hits, while striking out three and walking none.

Fantasy Tip: Uh, why was he selected as the team's fifth starter again? As has been emphasized previously, he's someone to avoid in all fantasy leagues, especially since he'll probably have a short leash with Nick Tropeano waiting in the wings. It also does him no favors pitching in the mighty tough AL West division.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker wins fifth spot

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 17:50:26 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker appears to have taken the fifth spot in the team's starting rotation. SP Nick Tropeano has been optioned to minor league camp.

Fantasy Tip: Based on both of their spring numbers, it legitimately looked like neither of the two wanted to begin the year on the pitching staff, but Shoemaker's 7.65 ERA barely bested Tropeano's 7.82 ERA. Shoemaker has regressed since his promising rookie campaign a couple years ago, so he should be avoided in drafts. It's hard to even recommend him for AL-only leagues, being in such a tough division. Tropeano has displayed some interesting promise since coming up in the same season, and despite the setback, he'll get another shot at some point this year. He's worth keeping an eye on in the minors.

Angels | Andrew Heaney, Hector Santiago locks

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 10:49:01 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Andrew Heaney and Hector Santiago both appear to be locks for the starting rotation to begin the season. SPs Nick Tropeano and Matt Shoemaker are competing for the fifth and final spot.

Fantasy Tip: Heaney had a nice showing in his first full season last year (6-4, 3.49 ERA in 105 innings). However, he's still a work in progress and won't strike many out. A breakout could happen, but he's still a late-round pick. Santiago may have peaked for the Angels in the first half last year, and if you're deciding between the two, Heaney is the easy choice for the upside.

Angels | Nick Tropeano scratched with flu

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 16:00:15 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Nick Tropeano (flu) was scratched from his start with the flu Monday, March 21, and the earliest he'll pitch in another spring game will be Saturday, March 26. Tropeano has made three Cactus League starts, and manager Mike Scioscia said Tropeano could still be ready for the regular season. He could be competing for the final rotation spot with SP Matt Shoemaker, who has allowed 13 runs in 14 spring innings.

Fantasy Tip: The way things are shaking out with the Angels' rotation so far, Tropeano has a pretty good shot at cracking the opening day roster. He made advances in dominance and command in small sample sizes last year, but a lack of track record will keep his price limited to a late-round flier in deep mixed and AL-only leagues.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker hopes to fix split-finger

Wed, 02 Mar 2016 17:53:34 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker went from 16-4 with a 3.04 ERA in 2014 to 7-10 with a 4.46 ERA in 2015. At the core of his struggles was his split-finger fastball, which went from being responsible for more than half of his 124 strikeouts in 2014 to more than a third of the 24 home runs he allowed in 2015.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker attributes some of his ineffectiveness last season to trying to bury the split-finger and ultimately leaving it a bit higher than he wanted to. The 29-year-old isn't even guaranteed to start the season in the big leagues, however, so he'll need to be strong in the spring in order to prove he can recapture the magic he had in 2014. Until that happens, he doesn't need to be rostered in fantasy.

Angels | Halos rotation competition

Wed, 17 Feb 2016 17:09:30 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Andrew Heaney and Hector Santiago are expected to be the final two arms in the starting rotation behind SPs Garrett Richards, Jered Weaver and C.J. Wilson. SPs Tyler Skaggs, Nick Tropeano and Matt Shoemaker are fighting to earn a spot this spring. A trade of a pitcher could open up a spot for a guy on the outside looking in.

Fantasy Tip: Of this group, Richards is the only one that should really excite fantasy owners in standard leagues. His ability to induce ground balls and miss bats makes him very intriguing in the middle rounds as a third starter. Heaney has some upside as a late-rounder in deep mixed leagues, but don't expect a true breakout.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker without timetable

Mon, 28 Sep 2015 15:37:15 -0700

Updating a previous report, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker (forearm) said his forearm feels "much better," but he still does not know when he will pitch again. He is hopeful of pitching again this season, though.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker ($5,600, 11.2% of cap) has been extremely inconsistent this season, so counting on him for another start in seasonal leagues is ill-advised. At this point, he can be replaced, as at best, he is nothing more than a desperation start in the majority of formats anyway.
