Angels | Matt Shoemaker fans 12 in solid outing

Sun, 22 May 2016 00:29:49 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker struck out 12 batters in a no-decision Saturday, May 21. The Angels lost, 3-1, to the Baltimore Orioles.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker had a 2-5 record and 8.49 ERA entering the game, and his ERA dropped to 6.81. Shoemaker was sent down to Class AAA to work on his mechanics earlier this month, and it looks like Shoemaker is settling down a bit. You might want to wait another start to see if Shoemaker can put together back-to-back contests that are good.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker to start Wednesday

Tue, 10 May 2016 16:20:29 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker will be called up from Class AAA Salt Lake to start against the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday, May 11.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker's excellent 2014 season (16-4, 3.04 ERA, 1.07 WHIP) seems like a long time ago. He was sporting a 9.15 ERA in five starts before the Angels sent him down this year, but he has another shot at a rotation spot with all the injuries to L.A.'s rotation. He's only an option to add in AL-only leagues if you're desperate, and he should be avoided in daily affairs tomorrow against the Cards.

Angels | Two Angels starters likely coming up

Fri, 06 May 2016 08:20:55 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker and SP Nate Smith are likely to come up from Class AAA Salt Lake to take the two open rotation spots.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker has had a rough go of it since his brilliant 2014 campaign. He's 1-4 with a 9.15 ERA in five starts and was recently demoted. Smith has been decent at Salt Lake as he's 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA, a 1.21 WHIP, and he has fanned 31 in 35 2/3 innings. He has just 13 starts above Class AA, and he's a bit of a wild card at 24. Both are worth scooping in AL-only leagues, but Tyler Skaggs looms if one of them can't get it done.

Angels | Garrett Richards dealing with dehydration

Wed, 04 May 2016 09:50:06 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Garrett Richards (dehydration) left his last start early due to dehydration, and it's not a sure thing that he'll make his next start against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, May 6. Richards skipped his normal bullpen session between his starts as a precaution. The Angels will evaluate him after he throws on flat ground. Richards hasn't seen any doctors or taken any MRI exams. Los Angeles would most likely use the bullpen if Richards can't start Friday. SP Matt Shoemaker, who was sent to the minors, is unlikely to be an option.

Fantasy Tip: Despite being 1-3, Richards has pitched well with a 2.34 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 8.8 strikeouts per nine innings. Because of his condition this week, you'll want to be extremely cautious in deploying him if he pitches against the Rays later this week.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker gets knocked around

Sat, 30 Apr 2016 23:46:44 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker allowed seven runs over just 2 1/3 innings Saturday, April 30, against the Texas Rangers while recording just one strikeout.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker has been touched for 13 runs in just 5 1/3 innings in two outings against Texas this season. Remember that, and avoid him in DFS play and most fantasy formats the next time these clubs square off.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker sharp out of nowhere

Wed, 13 Apr 2016 16:35:10 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker came through with an outstanding outing Wednesday, April 13, versus the Oakland Athletics. He tossed six shutout innings in which he issued just one hit, three walks and struck out five.

Fantasy Tip: Where did this come from? Shoemaker had a horrendous spring, and then got bombed by the Rangers in his first start of the year last Friday. Perhaps Nick Tropeano's sharp outing on Monday lit a fire under Shoemaker? Whatever the case, he's not worth adding in any leagues just yet. He'll have to string together a few more in a row before he even gets consideration.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker struggles Friday

Sat, 09 Apr 2016 05:18:47 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker allowed six runs on seven hits in three innings against the Texas Rangers Friday, April 8.

Fantasy Tip: Shoemaker struggled during spring training as well but likely will receive at least a few more starts. Shoemaker probably should only be used in AL-only leagues at this point and may only be a spot starter for owners.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker continues struggles

Tue, 29 Mar 2016 16:54:24 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker continued his spring struggles on Tuesday, March 29. In a minor league game, he logged five innings, en route to giving up eight runs (five earned) on 13 hits, while striking out three and walking none.

Fantasy Tip: Uh, why was he selected as the team's fifth starter again? As has been emphasized previously, he's someone to avoid in all fantasy leagues, especially since he'll probably have a short leash with Nick Tropeano waiting in the wings. It also does him no favors pitching in the mighty tough AL West division.

Angels | Matt Shoemaker wins fifth spot

Mon, 28 Mar 2016 17:50:26 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SP Matt Shoemaker appears to have taken the fifth spot in the team's starting rotation. SP Nick Tropeano has been optioned to minor league camp.

Fantasy Tip: Based on both of their spring numbers, it legitimately looked like neither of the two wanted to begin the year on the pitching staff, but Shoemaker's 7.65 ERA barely bested Tropeano's 7.82 ERA. Shoemaker has regressed since his promising rookie campaign a couple years ago, so he should be avoided in drafts. It's hard to even recommend him for AL-only leagues, being in such a tough division. Tropeano has displayed some interesting promise since coming up in the same season, and despite the setback, he'll get another shot at some point this year. He's worth keeping an eye on in the minors.

Angels | Andrew Heaney, Hector Santiago locks

Wed, 23 Mar 2016 10:49:01 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim SPs Andrew Heaney and Hector Santiago both appear to be locks for the starting rotation to begin the season. SPs Nick Tropeano and Matt Shoemaker are competing for the fifth and final spot.

Fantasy Tip: Heaney had a nice showing in his first full season last year (6-4, 3.49 ERA in 105 innings). However, he's still a work in progress and won't strike many out. A breakout could happen, but he's still a late-round pick. Santiago may have peaked for the Angels in the first half last year, and if you're deciding between the two, Heaney is the easy choice for the upside.
