Patriots | LeGarrette Blount battling Tyler Gaffney?

Fri, 19 Aug 2016 10:42:01 -0700

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount is "likely" battling RB Tyler Gaffney the club's final running back spot. RBs Dion Lewis and James White "appear to be locked in" as the receiving running backs, while RB Brandon Bolden "figures" to have a spot on the roster thanks to his role on special teams. Blount and Gaffney are competing for the "between-the-tackles kind of role."

Fantasy Tip: Due to Blount's proven track record, you have to believe he has the leg up in this competition, though it's also interesting that Gaffney was able to take an entire series worth of carries in the first half of New England's most recent preseason game with the first-team offense. No matter who emerges from this battle, though, they may not hold much fantasy value, given the amount of pieces regularly being used out of the Patriots backfield, as well as Bill Belichick's sometimes unpredictable use of his running backs.

Patriots | New England likely to add at RB

Mon, 25 Jan 2016 21:06:41 -0800

New England Patriots RB James White played 57 of the 83 offensive snaps in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24, and RB Brandon Bolden played 16. RB Steven Jackson rounded things out with 11 snaps. The team will also get RB Dion Lewis (knee) back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2016, while RB LeGarrette Blount is an impending free agent. The team might face an offseason similar to 2011 when the selected a pair of backs in the NFL Draft.

Fantasy Tip: Lewis has the potential to be the top running back with this current group, with White and Bolden as solid backups. However, look for a rookie, and possibly a veteran running back, to be added in the offseason to provide competition.

Patriots | New England RBs set for a small workload?

Thu, 24 Dec 2015 05:15:59 -0800

The New England Patriots ran the ball just nine times during their Week 7 game against the New York Jets, and a similar game plan is likely for their Week 16 meeting, in the opinion of's Christopher Price. RBs James White, Brandon Bolden, Joey Iosefa and Steven Jackson project to have a tough task this week, as New England has averaged 18 carries for just 62 yards over the past five games against the Jets.

Fantasy Tip: For the season, New York owns the second best run defense in yards per game. So with the New England backfield loaded with options, it will be difficult to trust anyone outside of White ($5,200, 10.4% of cap) in PPR formats, including at FantasyScore. Jackson, Bolden ($3,400, 6.8%) and Iosefa ($2,000, 4.0%) are nothing more than fliers in all formats because of their uncertain workload and difficult matchup.

Patriots | Pats backfield distributes workload

Mon, 21 Dec 2015 09:20:27 -0800

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden played 29 snaps in Week 15 against the Tennessee Titans, while RB James White played 23 snaps. RB Joey Iosefa was on the field for 19 offensive snaps (17 as an running back and two as a fullback), and finished with a team-high 51 yards on 14 carries in his NFL debut.

Fantasy Tip: Bill Belichick is constantly changing things up in his backfield, making it very tough to predict who will give you the most fantasy success. Things will get even more confusing after they just signed Steven Jackson. It wouldn't be smart to expect S-Jax to contribute much right away, but picking a daily option between Bolden, White and Iosefa is like playing the lottery.

Patriots | Brandon Bolden ready for workhorse role

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 09:09:03 -0800

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden said he is ready to be the workhorse running back with RB LeGarrette Blount (hip) out, if needed.

Fantasy Tip: Bolden ($2,900, 5.8% of cap) ran 16 times for 51 yards in Week 14 with Blount injured. Bolden's workload will go up significantly, but he'll share time with James White ($5,200, 10.4% of cap), who is more attractive in point-per-reception leagues like FantasyScore. Both Bolden and White should be owned everywhere now, but the Pats could bring in another body to share time, as well.

Patriots | Brandon Bolden steps up his game

Sun, 13 Dec 2015 22:46:18 -0800

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden ran 16 times for 51 yards in the Week 14 game against the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Tip: Bolden picked up the slack and was the primary ball carrier once LeGarrette Blount went down with a hip injury. If Blount is unavailable in Week 15 due to his injury then Bolden could be a nice sleeper FantasyScore play against the Tennessee Titans.

Patriots | Brandon Bolden has long TD catch

Sun, 29 Nov 2015 22:51:57 -0800

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden posted four rushes for 11 yards in the Week 12 game against the Denver Broncos, and he added four receptions for 84 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown.

Fantasy Tip: Bolden was lining up in five receiver sets in the slot, and he was basically trying his best to make up for the loss of Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman. He did a good job, and might be an attractive and cheap FantasyScore option going forward.

Patriots | Pats backfield to remain committee approach

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 14:11:34 -0800

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount's role will certainly increase with RB Dion Lewis (knee) out for the year, but the Patriots will remain a committee attack based on matchups and game situations. RB Brandon Bolden took over the pass-catching duties when Lewis was hurt in Week 9, but RB James White is closer to replicating Lewis' role when the game calls for an up-tempo attack. White was a healthy scratch in Week 9. White played 43 snaps to Blount's eight and Bolden's zero in Week 7 when Lewis was hurt.

Fantasy Tip: As you should know by now, relying on a single ball carrier in New England's backfield is maddening and will change on a week-to-week basis based on matchups and game flow. With Lewis out for the year, though, White should be your first target in deeper point-per-reception leagues, and he could immediately be a nice sleeper on FantasyScore against the New York Giants in Week 10.

Patriots | James White to replace Dion Lewis?

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 13:48:36 -0800

New England Patriots RB James White is the top candidate to replace RB Dion Lewis (knee) as the Patriots' passing down running back, according to's Mike Reiss. RB Brandon Bolden will also be in the mix, and played well replacing Lewis in Week 9.

Fantasy Tip: Both White and Bolden are worth a waiver wire pickup if they're available. Bolden seems like the guy to own after yesterday, but White played as Lewis's successor two weeks ago when Lewis was sidelined. It may not be known who exactly will be the main successor to Lewis until the Patriots play their next game.

Patriots | Brandon Bolden's role to increase

Mon, 09 Nov 2015 10:58:20 -0800

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden is expected to take over RB Dion Lewis' (knee) role in the backfield with him out for the season. Bolden had a touchdown catch in the Week 9 win over the Washington Redskins.

Fantasy Tip: James White, who was inactive in Week 9, will also factor into New England's backfield plans, and knowing Bill Belichick, this could be plenty messy for fantasy owners. But Bolden should be your first target if you're looking for running back help or owned Lewis, especially in point-per-reception leagues.
