Fri, 24 May 2013 13:06:42 -0700 Colorado Rockies INF DJ LeMahieu, 24, is now the team's starting second baseman after 2B Josh Rutledge was optioned to the minors. "I am excited to be part of this team. We are winning, and it's a lot more fun," LeMahieu said. "At the same time, I'm not taking anything for granted. I see how quickly things can change." Rutledge hit .286 in May and was on pace for 18 home runs and 18 stolen bases, but his defensive shortcomings hurt him the most. LeMahieu made the decision easier by going 7-for-17 recently and 4-for-8 earlier this week in back-to-back starts at the keystone. LeMahieu is hitting .305 in 88 career games for the Rockies, and he's committed only two errors in 327 chances in 70 games at second base in Colorado. Fantasy Tip: LeMahieu doesn't have as exciting speed or power skills as Rutledge, but he can boost your batting average at a position that is rather thin. LeMahieu can run a bit, too. The Rockies are clearly favoring defense over offense right now at the keystone. LeMahieu makes for nice middle infield depth in deep leagues, but expect Rutledge to be back sooner rather than later.
Wed, 22 May 2013 19:55:05 -0700 The Colorado Rockies optioned 2B Josh Rutledge to Triple-A Colorado Spring Wednesday, May 22. Fantasy Tip: Rutledge still can be part of the future plans in Colorado, but he can be dropped from all NL-only leagues. Consider adding DJ LeMahieu in his place. LeMahieu is expected to serve as the regular second baseman in Denver.
Wed, 20 Feb 2013 21:57:31 -0800 Colorado Rockies INF DJ LeMahieu is in camp competing, trying to make sure he isn't forgotten after ascending to the starting second base job last season. The team expects to use 2B Josh Rutledge as their starter, since he has more power. "I'm coming in here and competing. You could look at it both ways, but I think I'd be cutting myself short to be just trying to make the team," LeMahieu said Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Thu, 14 Feb 2013 17:30:26 -0800 Colorado Rockies C Wilin Rosario could hit fifth in the lineup this year with OF Carlos Gonzalez hitting third and SS Troy Tulowitzki in the cleanup spot. OF Dexter Fowler is the leading candidate to hit leadoff, and 2B Josh Rutledge and 3B Jordan Pacheco both are candidates to hit No. 2. "There will be some moving parts in the lineup. When we start up, we may fall into patterns, but it comes down to communicating with guys. If there's something a little different, I'll mention it to them," manager Walt Weiss said.
Wed, 23 Jan 2013 13:48:28 -0800 The Colorado Rockies avoided arbitration with INF Jonathan Herrera Wednesday, Jan. 23, by agreeing to a one-year, $900,000 deal. Herrera isn't a lock to make the roster this spring with INF Josh Rutledge shifting over to second base. INFs Chris Nelson, Jordan Pacheco, DJ LeMahieu and Ryan Wheeler will compete at third base. Herrera may compete directly with LeMahieu for a bench spot.
Sat, 29 Dec 2012 10:57:31 -0800 Colorado Rockies 2B Josh Rutledge is expected to enter spring training camp as the team's starter at second base, ahead of INF DJ LeMahieu.
Thu, 06 Sep 2012 07:29:36 -0700 Colorado Rockies SS Josh Rutledge will see regular playing time at second base the rest of the season.
Wed, 29 Aug 2012 14:03:05 -0700 Colorado Rockies manager Jim Tracy is impressed with SS Josh Rutledge and how quickly he has adapted to the big leagues. Rutledge is hitting .358 (49-for-137) with seven home runs and 26 RBIs in his first 40 major league contests. "I have tested him," Tracy said. "I've watched what he's done with runners on second, nobody out. I've challenged him with hit-and-run - he's passed. I've challenged him with using the whole field in given situations - he's passed. He's a quick learner."
Tue, 28 Aug 2012 16:03:20 -0700 Colorado Rockies OF Carlos Gonzalez is receiving a breather Tuesday, Aug. 28, and SS Josh Rutledge (quadriceps) is back in the starting lineup, but he's unlikely to play the whole game.
Mon, 27 Aug 2012 13:00:57 -0700 Colorado Rockies SS Josh Rutledge (quadriceps) could return to the lineup Monday, Aug. 27, after being limited to pinch hitting for the last eight games. He has gone 4-for-7 with four RBIs as a pinch hitter. Rutledge is expected to play some second base later this week to prepare for the position when SS Troy Tulowitzki (groin) returns. Manager Jim Tracy likes what he's seeing from INF DJ LeMahieu and said he'll see time when Rutledge returns, meaning Rutledge could also play some third base.
