Red Sox | Josh Rutledge placed on the disabled list

Fri, 17 Jun 2016 12:01:46 -0700

Boston Red Sox INF Josh Rutledge (knee) was placed on the disabled list with left knee patellar tendinitis Friday, June 17.

Fantasy Tip: Rutledge has only received 56 plate appearances this season, so he was nothing more than a depth option in cavernous mixed and AL-only setups and can be replaced. Marco Hernandez could see an uptick in at-bats as a utility infielder, but he's a desperation fantasy bat.

Red Sox | Travis Shaw will not start

Sun, 12 Jun 2016 09:09:48 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Travis Shaw is not in the starting lineup against Minnesota Twins SP Pat Dean Sunday, June 12. 2B Josh Rutledge will start at third base and is batting eighth in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Rutledge is batting .273 in limited playing time this season but has gone hitless in each of his last eight games. Owners should be able to find better options to use and can avoid Rutledge in most leagues.

Red Sox | David Ortiz, Travis Shaw out

Wed, 08 Jun 2016 15:20:50 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B David Ortiz (rest) and 3B Travis Shaw (rest) are both out of the lineup Wednesday, June 8, against San Francisco Giants SP Madison Bumgarner. Ortiz is sitting while the team plays without a designated hitter in a National League park, while 2B Josh Rutledge is filling in at third base and batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Ortiz hasn't played first base all year, so it's no surprise to see Hanley Ramirez continue to hold down the fort there while the Red Sox play a rare series at AT&T Park. Shaw, meanwhile, is getting a breather with an elite southpaw on the hill, but owners shouldn't really consider his replacement for this evening in daily games. Rutledge doesn't have a hit in his last 11 at-bats.

Red Sox | David Ortiz scratched

Sun, 29 May 2016 10:11:11 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B David Ortiz (foot) was scratched from the starting lineup Sunday, May 29, because of a possible foot injury. 1B Hanley Ramirez is serving as the designated hitter. 3B Travis Shaw is starting at first base, while 2B Josh Rutledge is starting at third base and is batting seventh.

Fantasy Tip: Owners will need to keep an eye on the situation to see if Ortiz will need to miss multiple games. Rutledge has only two hits in his last five games and should be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Red Sox | Travis Shaw not playing Tuesday

Tue, 24 May 2016 12:18:59 -0700

Boston Red Sox 3B Travis Shaw is not in the starting lineup Tuesday, May 24. 2B Josh Rutledge is starting at the hot corner and is hitting eighth against Colorado Rockies SP Jorge De La Rosa.

Fantasy Tip: Rutledge has a nice matchup against a struggling pitcher in his first start off the DL, but it's hard to trust the light-hitting second baseman in any format. He has 13 hits in 35 at-bats (.371) this year but has a career .265 average and has never reached double-digit home runs in his five-year career.

Red Sox | Dustin Pedroia out for Game 2

Wed, 18 May 2016 14:47:19 -0700

Boston Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia is not in the starting lineup for Game 2 of a doubleheader against the Kansas City Royals Wednesday, May 18. 2B Josh Rutledge is starting at second base and is hitting sixth against Royals SP Edinson Volquez.

Fantasy Tip: Despite a .407 average this year, Rutledge isn't much to look at offensively and is a desperation daily play against the Royals in the nightcap of the doubleheader. He has 11 hits in 27 at-bats but has no home runs and only three RBI on the year.

Red Sox | Hanley Ramirez, Brock Holt sitting

Wed, 18 May 2016 08:30:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B Hanley Ramirez and OF Brock Holt are out of the lineup Wednesday, May 18, in the first game of a doubleheader. 3B Josh Rutledge is hitting sixth, and OF Chris Young is hitting eighth. C Ryan Hanigan is hitting ninth with C Christian Vazquez also resting.

Fantasy Tip: Young is only worth using against lefties, which Ian Kennedy is not. Rutledge is 4-for- 9 (.444) the last week and might be worth a basement flyer. Hanigan isn't worth starting in DFS.

Red Sox | David Ortiz not starting

Sun, 15 May 2016 09:10:08 -0700

Boston Red Sox 1B David Ortiz is not in the starting lineup against Houston Astros SP Chris Devenski Sunday, May 15. 3B Travis Shaw will start at first base, while 1B Hanley Ramirez will serve as the designated hitter. 2B Josh Rutledge will start at third base and is batting seventh in the lineup.

Fantasy Tip: Ramirez and Shaw have played well and should be starters in all fantasy leagues. Rutledge has only one hit in his last nine at-bats and is not a great option for most owners.
