Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said he believes WR Devin Hester was just speaking emotionally and that he won't be retiring after a frustrating season. "Obviously, Devin's under contract, so if he sent his retirement papers in, I would know," Emery said. "But I don't anticipate that. I think he's a great competitor. I think that was an emotional situation that evoked an emotional response, and I certainly understand that."

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said the team's decision to fire former head coach Lovie Smith ultimately came down to inconsistency on offense and an inability to perennially advance to the postseason. "During the course of Smith's career, we've had one offense that ranked in the teens (in 2006, when the Bears advanced to the Super Bowl). We haven't had the balance between our defensive excellence," Emery said. "We have searched for answers. The end result is we did not have enough consistency. That, paired with not getting into the playoffs on a consistent basis, I made the change moving forward."

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery stressed the importance of silence and humility for rookies as they prepare for training camp. "(It's) kind of like Brian Urlacher said: 'Be quiet, be humble.' Work. Work," Emery said. "Find a way to contribute to the team whether that's on special teams, or as a role player as a pass rusher; whether that's a role player or a first- and second-down player. Whatever that role is, being a great practice player, being a guy that busts everybody else's but - work ethic, attitude - and showing us those skills that we drafted and that they contribute towards our goals in a positive way."

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery said he is not concerned about WR Brandon Marshall's pervious off-field issues and feels Marshall will be a good fit. "People have the capacity to change," Emery said. "He's an intelligent guy, and he's accepted his faults, and he's working toward improving them. I thought about it a lot. Isn't that what we'd want out of our children? They might stumble, but when they do, they seriously try to improve their lives. We felt if there was a place Brandon would fit, it was here."

"Between free agency and the draft we have to find a way to meet our needs," Emery said. "We're always looking to improve our squad, regardless of internally what we would think about our immediate needs. We're always looking for playmakers."
