Braves | SS battle still in effect

Tue, 27 Mar 2012 15:48:11 -0700

Atlanta Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said the battle for the shortstop job could come down to the final day between SSs Tyler Pastornicky and Andrelton Simmons. Simmons has hit .205 in 13 spring games and Pastornicky is hitting .220 after getting hits in five of his last six games. Gonzalez realizes that neither player will be expected to be an offensive force this year. SS Jack Wilson could see significant time at the position if either youngster struggles mightily in the regular season.

Braves | Andrelton Simmons making a run

Mon, 12 Mar 2012 10:49:38 -0700

Atlanta Braves SS Andrelton Simmons has impressed to the point this spring that he could be challenging SS Tyler Pastornicky as the starting shortstop. Simmons, who hasn't played above Class A, is still a long shot to unseat Pastornicky. "He's got it," 3B Chipper Jones said of Simmons, who started a split-squad game alongside him Friday, March 9. "He's major league-ready defensively, there's no doubt about that. When everybody says that he's major league-ready defensively, they're saying it for a reason."
