Detroit Lions CB Darius Slay (knee) is expected to compete with CB Bill Bentley (shoulder) for the starting job opposite CB Chris Houston. Slay missed the rookie camp last weekend after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his knee. However, Slay is expected to be ready for training camp.

Detroit Lions CB Bill Bentley (shoulder) is rehabbing from surgery on both of his shoulders, but he is still hopeful of earning a starting job in training camp and the preseason. He isn't quite back to 100 percent with organized team activities (OTAs) starting next week. However, Bentley said Wednesday, May 15, he will be healthy before too long. "I'm going to be there when everybody hits the field," Bentley said. "I'm coming to compete."

Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew said he expects the teams high draft picks to be on the field quickly because of the needs of the team. "That's a fair statement, but it's also fair to say we had more holes coming into it, or more holes that we knew about, coming into this draft than we did last year," Mayhew said. "We do expect a lot of those guys, especially guys that we took early, to be on the field pretty quickly." First-round pick DE Ezekiel Ansah was drafted to replace DE Kyle Vanden Bosch. Second round pick CB Darius Slay will compete with CB Bill Bentley. Third round pick OG Larry Warford will likely replace OG Stephen Peterman.

Detroit Lions CBs Bill Bentley (shoulder), Chris Greenwood (abdominal) and Jonte Green were drafted last April, but remain unproven. Bentley missed most of the season due to a shoulder injury, Greenwood missed the entire year due to an abdominal ailment, and Green was mostly a backup.

He must visit an outside neurologist who is not affiliated with the team, and receive clearance, before he can re-join the team.

Louisiana-Lafayette DB Dwight Bentley was considered as a marginal free-agent prospect entering the NFL Scouting Combine, but he really improved his draft stock considerably. Bentley had a nice Senior Bowl, and parlayed that with a good performance Tuesday, Feb. 28. Bentley's times in the 40-yard dash were both in the mid-4.4-second range, and he looked good in drills. Bentley showed off quick, fluid backpedaling and good balance. Some scouts feel he might have moved into the middle of the second round in the NFL Draft.
